What we like most about One Kenton Place is that its main goal is helping people maintain their dignity and respect, even when Alzheimer’s and dementia are in the mix. Simply put, they offer personalized care that covers all the bases—social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual needs.

The cool thing about their process is their assessment program, wherein a specialist sets up either an in-person visit or a video call to evaluate if their place is the right fit for your loved one. It’s not just about filling beds for profit; they genuinely care about ensuring it’s a good match.

They’re on top of things when it comes to daily life. Their activities and programs are always getting a once-over, and they’ve got all the cozy comforts covered—like accessibility, cable and internet, and round-the-clock nursing support.

It’s also worth noting that some residents who arrived in wheelchairs are now walking and feeling more independent in no time. And others, who were initially quiet, are now having full-on conversations, thanks to the right mix of activities and interactions.

So, about their rates? It’s not up on their website, but hey, they have this easy online application for you to scope things out. Overall, if you’re after specialized dementia care, we’d give One Kenton Place a big thumbs up.

Pros

  • Focuses on Alzheimer’s and dementia care
  • Has tailored social and wellness programs
  • Does in-person visit or a video conference call evaluation
  • Has comprehensive services and amenities

Cons

  • Rates are available upon request

Provides safe environment for their residents

“Excellent care in a specialized residence for Dementia.  The staff is well trained and provides a safe environment for their residents.  Facility is well kept and the food is excellent.  Excellent nursing/PSW staff.”

Jed Rabinovitch, Google Review

Comprehensive services for their residents

“Nine months ago we were searching for a residence for my 96 year old father who was struggling at home alone with dementia……Their daily health and safety protocols kept residents safe throughout the pandemic and I believe have kept him more ambulatory and healthy than he would have been living alone at home.  Daily activities, exercise and nutritious meals tailored to his needs have kept him engaged and supported in a safe environment.  It is an extremely clean, bright and positive space for seniors.  It is also a supportive environment for families trying to understand the challenges of the disease and  support their aging family members.  The staff is empathetic, cheerful and has an abundance of patience and understanding for seniors coping with complicated health issues.”

Since opening its doors in 1976, The Briton House has been all about creating a warm, welcoming vibe with a focus on personalized care. Their Personal Care Program tailors health services to each personal and medical needs, ensuring everyone gets what they need.

We love that The Briton House has amenities that boost the quality of life. Residents can chill in a massive 15,000-square-foot indoor garden, catch live shows in the recital hall, swim in a glass-domed pool, hit the gym, enjoy the sun-simulation room, and hang out in the courtyard.

Also, all memory-impaired residents automatically join the Britonian Club, which is neat. It’s a daily program with life-skills activities like baking, gardening, active and cognitive games, theater arts, musical entertainment, and intergenerational programs.

Just a heads-up, some extra services come with a fee. These include hairdressing, guest meals in the main dining room, dry cleaning, delivered toiletries, and escorts to the dining room, entertainment, appointments, and hearing aid clinics.

All in all, The Briton House is a great choice, especially if your loved one enjoys a variety of activities and environments without any risk. Plus, you can book a virtual tour and check out the facility from the comfort of your home, which we think is a nice touch.

Pros

  • Has a virtual tour
  • Provide a structured activities program
  • Has excellent amenities

Cons

  • Additional services are on a fee-for-service basis

Excellent communication and hospitality

“Jared is a fantastic person of contact, thoughtful, generous and caring. The staff are professional, the premises relaxing and high end. The community is solid and helpful. Great location. A 10 rating in all all aspects !!”

Expertise and sensitivity in handling different needs

“My sister and I are forever grateful that we found Briton House. When our mom developed dementia, we tried her in a couple of places with disastrous results because they didn’t have the expertise or sensitivity to deal with her disease. From the moment she moved into Briton House, we could breathe again because everyone involved in her care knew exactly how to make her feel safe and loved and content. The daily activities were creatively geared for the diminishing mind, and there was always lots of laughter. When we wanted to give Mom a change of scenery, we had options to go to the building: a lovely leafy atrium, where we could have tea, a “beach” room, with the soothing sound of the ocean, and an outdoor patio, with gardens, trees and sky. Finally, Mom loved her room: it was just big enough for us to make it comfy and cosy, but not so big that she felt lost. It was such a relief to know she was comfortable, surrounded by people who genuinely cared for her and looked after her so well. So it went for five years, until Mom died a few months ago in just the way we wished for her — at peace in her home sweet home. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all our friends at Briton House..”

Plus, it’s awesome that residents at The Village Langley can get in on cool stuff like gardening and art classes—it’s a perfect fit for folks who love a bustling, interactive scene. Great community and environment

The community is unique & innovative, very open and surrounded by nature, with various levels of care available, our impression was a big emphasis on community and caring staff with a good ratio to residents. Everything was spotless.”

Carefor Richmond Care Home in Ottawa is all about that cozy, close-knit feel. They’re big on giving compassionate care, which is pretty awesome, offering services to make life better, like specialized dementia programs and personalized care plans.

Here’s the deal: because Carefor Richmond Care Home is on the smaller side, they’ve got more staff to go around, which means more one-on-one attention for residents. But here’s the catch—they can only take in a limited number of folks, so if you’re after a long-term spot, you might need to keep your options open.

Though it’s nice to see that residents get the royal treatment, which is a big plus, and they’ve got comfy, private rooms and round-the-clock nursing care, so you know you’re covered no matter what time it is.

They’re also big on keeping things lively over at Carefor Richmond, with regular activities and social events to keep residents in the loop. But hey, just a heads-up—they might not have all the bells and whistles of the bigger places, and the range of specialized programs could be a tad limited.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that Dufferin Care Centre is tailor-made for women dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. It’s the perfect fit if you’re all about that caring, community vibe and want your loved one to get the attention they deserve.

Pros

  • Provides affordable dementia care
  • Has regular recreational activities and social events
  • High staff-to-resident ratio for personalized care
  • Exclusively for women with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia

Cons

  • Limited amenities than larger facilities
  • Doesn’t offer many specialized programs as bigger homes

Truly allows for individualized care

“My mom has been a resident at Carefor for almost a year now. I am very impressed with how well she has settled in.  The staff are all very kind and caring, as well as professional. I love the small intimate size of this home.  It truly allows for individualized care, unlike some of the large and perhaps more fancy care homes. I would recommend Carefor Richmond to any family who has a mother /grandmother, etc, they adore.”

Mim Dickson, Google Review

Focuses on making it a home-like environment

“We visited here as part of the process to find an appropriate long-term care facility for a family member.  This looks like a wonderful place.  They specialize in making it a home-like environment for their patients, most of whom suffer from some sort of Dementia.  The only problem for us is that there are no government subsidies available, which makes it somewhat expensive. Update: My mother has been staying here for the last few months now and this is indeed a wonderful place for your loved one with moderate dementia issues.  The staff is excellent and the care the residents receive is truly wonderful.”

Pros

  • Modern facilities with comfortable living spaces
  • Has on-site dieticians
  • Provides comprehensive care services

Cons

  • Closed on weekends
  • Slightly pricier due to extensive amenities and services

Over in British Columbia, Dufferin Care Centre is all about striking that perfect balance between comfort and top-notch care. They’ve got you covered with everything from specialized dementia care to all-around support, so that residents get what they need no matter what stage they’re at.

They’ve got all bases covered, not just physically but emotionally and socially, too. With loads of games, events, and entertainment, they keep things buzzing. Plus, they never miss a chance to celebrate birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, you name it, which makes life in complex care joyful and lively.

Also, with modern facilities and comfortable living spaces, Dufferin Care Centre provides 24/7 nursing and personal care, on-site dining with varied menu options, and regular social and recreational activities. We love that this ensures all aspects of a resident’s well-being are considered.

But here’s the thing: all those helpful amenities and services come with a price tag. To add, snagging a spot can be quite a challenge since this place is pretty popular.

Nonetheless, Dufferin Care Centre stands out for its modern facilities and holistic approach to dementia care. If you’re in the market for a place that combines comfort, modern amenities, and comprehensive care, it’s definitely worth considering.

Highly accommodating and hospitable

“I moved into Dufferin Care Centre about two months ago and my experience with the admin and nursing staff as well as the care aides has been wonderful.  The staff are always there to help and answer questions.  It’s so nice to feel welcomed into the Centre by the cheerful staff that always acknowledge you when you walk by and treat everyone with respect.  I have made new friends and enjoy the various activities available to me throughout the day. Thank you for making the transition to my new home a positive experience.”

Provides regular updates and developments

“My mother has been at Dufferin Care Centre since April ‘23 and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone there for taking such good care of her.  The staff there is wonderful on all levels.  They are caring, kind and cheerful. My highest praise goes to the new General Manager, Christian Bunz.  He is doing an excellent job.  He is enthusiastic and dedicated to providing the best care to the residents and getting to know the families. In less than 2 months, we’ve already had 2 family council meetings.  He follows up with Meeting Minutes and regularly updates us on the latest developments with DCC (e.g. calendars, newsletters, Covid updates, etc.).  As I live in the US, his hard work helps us stay informed.

Thank you for all you do.  Keep up the good work, DCC!”
