And when your little one starts dreaming of hanging with Sigourney Weaver at the Marine Life Institute after watching Finding Dory, you know a top-notch education is non-negotiable.
So, why not give ’em the best shot by enrolling them in one of Ottawa’s finest private schools? I’ve done the legwork and the snooping to bring you the cream of the crop. Let’s dive in!

Pros
- Has smaller class sizes
- Offers before and after school care
- Specializes in students with learning disabilities
- Hands-on faculty and staff
Cons
- No junior kindergarten classes
Heritage Academy is well-known for its focus on specialization in teaching students with learning abilities. This means they have special programs and curriculums in place – designed for students with dyslexia and other language-based exceptionalities.
They’ve also got specialized environments and smaller class sizes that work wonders for students with ADD/ADHD, anxiety, and attention-based exceptionalities.
And, you know, based on stories we’ve heard from parents, Heritage Academy has truly helped these students feel more confident about learning.
As for their curriculum, we’ve also seen how their faculty and staff are super hands-on with their students. They’re well-informed about different learning disabilities and what their students are dealing with.
We appreciate that they don’t make excuses with ignorance but rather take the initiative to make things easier and more effective for their students.
And thanks to this hands-on approach, their students can move on to higher education, whether they have a learning disability or not.
But we can’t help feeling a bit bummed out that they don’t offer preschool or junior kindergarten. It could be a real lifesaver for parents who want their kids to go from JK up to Grade 12 in one place.
All in all, we’d recommend Heritage Academy if your kids are dealing with learning disabilities or any other issues that are affecting their education.

Pros
- Offers International Baccalaureate Programme
- Has a SMILE Literacy program
- Holds summer camps
- Small class sizes
Cons
- Sightly pricier than others
Académie de la Capitale is an IB World School that offers rigorous JK to Grade 12 programs. IB schools are known for teaching more than one language from as early as age 7, which is awesome for multilingual households or if you just want your kids to pick up another language.
Another thing that caught our eye was how they use the Systematic Multisensory Intensive Literacy Education (SMILE) program.
You’ll see teachers work one-on-one or in small groups with kids who need extra reading and spelling help, which boosts their confidence.
And talking about small groups, we’re pretty happy to see that their classes are kept small and intimate, with only 5 to 15 students per class.
So, this setup makes it easy for teachers to give each student one-on-one attention, which has helped the kids, especially those who needed a little extra support.
However, all these impressive programs and setups come with a slightly heftier price tag. Their JK to G12 tuition fees were about $5000 more than what you’d find at other private schools.
We also stumbled upon their summer camp posters, and they sound like a blast – kids can dive into stuff like robotics, coding, STEAM, and all that jazz.
It’s a pretty cool idea if your kids are into that sort of thing, and they even offer Monday pizza and Tuesday-Friday lunch options, too.

Pros
- Has a 100% university placement
- IB World School with students from over 60 countries
- Competent curriculum and faculty
Cons
- Doesn’t offer preschool to grade 3
- Pricier than other schools
We’re impressed with Ashbury College because they’ve got this amazing track record as an IB World School, with a 100% placement rate for universities.
It’s clear to see how alumni and parents have reaped the benefits, especially when aiming for those top-tier universities.
Their impressive credentials have made them a hit with international students. From our research, we found that they have representation from over 60 countries.
We found that this, in turn, adds to the school vibe. Overall, the setup offers a diverse and open-minded environment through interactions with peers from around the globe.
It’s also noteworthy that Ashbury College has over 70 extracurricular activities for students to dive into, which is awesome for building skills beyond academics. But we’re a bit disappointed that they don’t have classes for preschool to grade 3 students.
However, just a heads up, their tuition fees are pretty steep, running at about $36,250 for day students and a hefty $80,670 for boarding students. And from what we’ve found, the tuition fee is roughly $10,000 more than the average private school fee.
On a positive note, we’ve seen how competent Ashbury College is. For instance, their students are active in a wide range of activities, sports, leadership roles, and more, helping each student find their unique path for growth and development—that doesn’t sound bad, eh?

Pros
- Offers various scholarships
- Has 103 clubs and teams
- 100% of graduates are accepted into university
Cons
- Pricey tuition fees
- Doesn’t have designated programs for special learning needs
We have to give props to Elmwood – they’re known as one of the most innovative girls’ schools in North America and ranked among the top 25 private schools in Canada.
So, you could say they’re academically advanced, setting up a solid environment for students who are ready to take on the challenge.
Backing that up, we found out that all of their graduates get accepted into universities. And get this: 94% of grads from the class of 2020 scored university entrance scholarships—talk about giving their students a leg up for higher education.
And yes, they’re totally on point with their academics, but they’re all about balancing it out with activities and socializing too. We appreciate their selection of about 103 clubs and teams to choose from, so students can take their pick.
We just kind of wish they offered programs for students with special abilities or learning needs.
And if you’re thinking about this school, it’s probably a good idea to check out their tuition and fees on their website since it can get pretty pricey, usually over $34,000.
Other than that, the parents and students we chatted with are pretty happy about being part of Elmwood. And it’s no surprise, considering they were able to get into the universities they wanted and even have the privilege to choose where they want to go.

Pros
- Great bilingual educational program
- Has affordable fees
- Has approachable and fun faculty
Cons
- Can improve communication with parents or guardians
- Doesn’t have special needs programs
- Doesn’t offer grade 9 to 12
An impressive aspect of Westboro Academy is the rigorous bilingual program. They seamlessly integrate the Ontario English curriculum with the French first language curriculum from Québec.
Additionally, they host a yearly science fair and a French-language heritage fair (for grades 5 to 8), providing students with valuable experience in public speaking. Plus, being bilingual is always a huge plus in the real world.
It’s nice to see the faculty at Westboro Academy building a healthy learning environment and solid relationships with the students.
We saw how kids feel totally at ease approaching their teachers for questions or just to chat, and it’s awesome how inclusive they are with everyone.
On the flip side, they only teach up to grade 8, so you’d have to look for another suitable school for senior high, which can be inconvenient for some, especially for students who already have close friends there.
Also, keep in mind that they might not be the best fit for those with learning needs. They could also step up their game by responding to parent emails quicker, especially since parents can get pretty antsy waiting around.
Overall, we think Westboro Academy is a solid choice for anyone who speaks French or wants to dive into a bilingual environment for growth and development.
