You could practice kicks in your basement, but let’s be honest, your laundry basket won’t correct your form, and your dog might think it’s playtime.
Martial arts gyms in Winnipeg give you real mats, trained coaches, and a safe space to build strength, discipline, and self-defense skills. Plus, it’s way more exciting than another boring treadmill session, right?
In this article, I dive into the best spots in the city to help you find options where training goes beyond fitness. Read on!

Innovative Martial Arts & Fitness is a great pick for families who want more than a regular sports class.
What stands out to me is the huge mix of programs available, from toddler lessons and adult MMA to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), kickboxing, aerial arts, and even circus-style training.
When I visited their facility, I noticed how much the instructors emphasize life skills, not just physical moves. Kids are taught self-discipline, concentration, and focus in an active, fun way.
Parents may also like the extra family-friendly options, including summer camps and birthday parties.
Just a heads up: some of their grappling classes have strict age limits, with certain jiu-jitsu programs only open to teens aged 14 or 15 and up.

The classes are fun, well-structured, and really help build confidence and discipline in a positive environment. They look forward to every session and always come home excited to share what they’ve learned. 2. Aikido Of Winnipeg Martial Arts Dojo

Website: https://aikidowinnipeg.com/
Address: 4-88A Sherbrook Street
Contact: 204-470-8269
Hours:
- Mon, Wed, Fri 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
- Sat 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
Aikido Of Winnipeg has a strong community feel, mainly because they run entirely as a non-profit organization. Every instructor volunteers their time, which creates a welcoming, passion-driven atmosphere for learning Aikido.
What stands out to me is the level of guidance here. Students train under Doug Reichert Sensei, a 5th-dan chief instructor registered with the Aikikai Honbu dojo in Tokyo, Japan.
The teaching team is impressive too, with Leanne Reichert Sensei and Gillian Sadler Sensei, two of the top ten highest-ranked Aikido women in Canada.
I also like how beginner-friendly they are. You can try a free intro class in loose clothing before buying gear.
The only potential downside is the limited schedule, with just four weekly time blocks available.

I will be forever grateful
I spent two and a half years training with aikido of Winnipeg and was devastated to leave when I moved away from Winnipeg. This is a traditional iwama style school that covers all aspects of aikido not just the self defense part. I will be forever grateful to Doug sensei and the other senior students for introducing me to aikido and patiently teaching me over those two years. I haven’t found another dojo with a similar energy yet.

This is the warmest, most supportive dojo community that I’ve ever been a part of
I have been a member of this dojo for over twelve years now. As a long time student of Aikido I can honestly say that this is the warmest, most supportive dojo community that I have ever been a part of . Our senseis Doug Reichert and his wife Leanne are strong, committed leaders, and experienced and encouraging teachers.

Thrive Academy welcomes women who want to learn self-defence without feeling thrown into an intimidating gym.
What stands out most is their dedicated women’s BJJ program, led by supportive instructors who understand both practical training goals and the need for a strong community.
They also start kids early, with classes for little ones as young as 2.5, helping them build movement, focus, and confidence before the harder stuff begins.
I like that their curriculum goes beyond the mats too, shaping character, emotional awareness, and resilience along the way.
Adults can even join at any skill level, making it a solid alternative to regular personal training.
Just note: if you’re after kickboxing or Muay Thai, you’ll need to go to another gym.

Super hospitable
Dropped in for a couple classes while on a work trip. Aaron was super hospitable and got me all set up for a gi and nogi class. Coach Dan’s instruction was technical, concise and very effective. He helped me with adjustments as I practiced the techniques. And the rest of the students and overall atmosphere were chill and welcoming. I was even given a ride back to hotel instead of walking back on a cold night. I will definitely return next time in Winnipeg!

Friendly and welcoming gym
I had the pleasure of dropping in at Thrive and had an amazing experience. Extremely friendly and welcoming gym with a wide variety of skill levels and age groups with options for beginner and advanced classes almost everyday of the week. The atmosphere is very professional and welcoming and the instructors take the time to explain all the moves out so everyone in the room understands what’s going on. Would recommend for anyone looking to train or looking to start training.

- See their specific class schedules
If you want training that feels structured but still beginner-friendly, go to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. The school uses the official certified Gracie University curriculum, which is great for students who like having a clear system to follow.
What stood out to me is the access to online video lessons, so you can review techniques at home instead of forgetting everything after class.
A friend of mine who trains here likes that first-timers can learn cooperative real-life defence without being pushed into forced sparring right away. They also offer a dedicated women’s self-defense program taught by qualified instructors.
And if you’re unsure, the 10-day trial is a nice way to test the vibe first.
That said, the program is very ground-defence focused, so you won’t find striking, kickboxing, or kata here.

They demonstrate and teach each move very clearly
My daughter was very shy and unsure at first about attending jiu-jitsu, but after attending a few classes, she looks forward to coming each day. Now that her 10-day trial is ending, she wants to continue her classes. She is becoming more confident and interested in each class she attends. The instructors are very welcoming and friendly, creating such a great atmosphere. They demonstrate and teach each move very clearly with knowledge and confidence. Overall, it has been such a great experience for her; I would highly recommend this place to friends and family.

Canadian Fighting Center Winnipeg is the largest combat sports facility in central Canada. That means serious athletes and fitness-focused students get access to a huge space built for real competition!
What I appreciate here is the range of programs they offer. You can join boxing, advanced Muay Thai, MMA sparring, and self-defence, depending on how intense you want your training to be.
The competitive pathway is another plus. Because of their connection with the Canadian Fighting Championship, members get a local platform for amateur and professional bouts.
They also have strong martial arts roots as the first official Roufusport affiliate gym in the world.
However, it’s not ideal for younger kids since participants must be at least 8. Drop-ins also need appointments, so planning ahead is a must.

We’ve had a fantastic experience so far
My son started taking kickboxing at Canadian Fight Center about a month ago, and we’ve had a fantastic experience so far. Coach Giuseppe is amazing with the kids, patient, encouraging, and really knows how to connect with them. Giuseppe and his team are very knowledgeable and run a clean, professional gym. It’s clear they take pride in what they do. The free parking is also a great bonus. Most importantly, my son is having a lot of fun while learning new skills. He looks forward to every class and really admires Coach Giuseppe. Highly recommend!
