Pros

  • Wide range of services and approach
  • Many psychologists available
  • Offers in-person and virtual sessions
  • Multiple payment methods

Cons

  • Closed on Sundays
  • Incomplete fees guide

Solace Psychology provides therapy services to children, teens, adults, and families. They use therapeutic methods that have been researched and proved effective.

We want to start by saying that we appreciate the detailed information on their team. It’s composed of qualified professionals to ensure you get the proper treatment.

We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic has made many people anxious about their health. That’s why we like that you can choose between an in-person or virtual session.

Additionally, this option can help with your current concerns without having to worry about an in-person session if you’re still not comfortable doing that.

We appreciate their wide range of services, from stress management to PTSD. If you’re having a hard time with stressors, their team can help diagnose and guide you to the right treatment.

Furthermore, they offer group therapy for those who need to connect with other people dealing with the same situations. This is also cheaper than individual therapy if budget is your concern.

Besides that, this helps reduce the feeling of isolation since you will be talking with people dealing with similar issues. Moreover, there are various perspectives since each member will be at a different stage of treatment.

The team also has different approaches to guide you toward the right path. We also like that your psychologist can use a variety of methods to help you.

As for their prices, they use the recommended fee schedule by the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta (PAA). We like that they accept cash, VISA, Mastercard, e-transfer, and direct billing.

However, you need to contact them to check the cost of group therapy sessions and assessments. Despite using the PAA’s suggested fees, not adding these might cause a miscommunication.

Also, sessions will last for 50 minutes. After counselling, an additional 10 minutes is needed for charting and confirming your following schedule with Solace Psychology.

Pros

  • Open daily
  • Wide range of services
  • Offers reduced rates
  • Has online counselling

Cons

  • Limited availability
  • Higher rates

Insight Psychological was first established in 1997. Since then, it has grown by adding more offices in Edmonton and Calgary.

We appreciate the readily available information on their team for potential patients to look at. We believe this helps ease nervousness since you’ll learn more about your psychologist.

They have a wide range of counselling and assessment services. Additionally, they accept patients from children to adults.

Another thing we appreciate is online counselling if you’re worried about possible exposure to COVID-19. We believe this is also a good option for busy individuals and those that live in remote areas.

We want to note that their fees are just a tad higher at $210 per hour for individual counselling. But you have a choice of getting a reduced rate of $75 for the first three sessions if you seek therapy from a practicum intern therapist.

Although some may feel hesitant regarding this option, we appreciate that a registered psychologist will supervise the students.

Besides that, their in-person therapy gets booked fast. We noticed limited availability for some psychologists, so we suggest booking a month in advance if you’re available only on specific days.

As for the patients who talked to us, they praised the professionalism and compassion shown by psychologists at Insight Psychological. In addition, they offered support during difficult times, which immensely helped each patient’s recovery progress.

Pros

  • Established in 1992
  • Fair rates
  • Client-centered approach
  • Offers boundary and identity therapy

Cons

  • Closed on Sundays
  • Limited availability on certain evenings

In 1992, Kids Support Group was founded to help children and families. It then changed its name to Kells Counselling in 1995 to provide more variety of counselling services.

To ease your mind, you can check the psychologists’ credentials on the website. This information will give you an idea before committing to a psychologist.

Aside from individual and couples counselling, they offer boundary and identity programs. What we like about this is it can help people struggling with setting boundaries.

Additionally, they developed programs for kids, teens, and adults. So no matter your age, you can find group therapy to support you.

As for their rates, they use the PAA’s recommended fee schedule. So you won’t worry about higher charges since they offer fair prices.

Just remember that you must pay in full before each session. Kids Support Group also does direct billing as long as your insurance provider is on their list.

We heard several praises for the team’s professionalism and friendliness. We like their approach that centres on the client to ensure they felt safe and heard.

You should know that on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings, the Kells office will only be open at appointment times. So, it’s best to book a schedule ahead to ensure an evening slot if you’re busy during the day.

But you don’t have to worry about booking too far in advance. Sometimes, you can find a schedule the next day if you need a session immediately.

Pros

  • Open daily
  • Specialises in eclectic approach
  • Has visual counselling
  • Uses PAA’s recommended fee schedule

Cons

  • Lack of payment method details
  • Lack of details on direct billing

Summit Counselling Services provides in-office and virtual counselling sessions to Edmonton residents. They serve patients ranging from children to adults.

The team specialises in using an eclectic counselling approach. The eclectic approach uses multiple techniques so the psychologist can find the most effective method for the patient.

They use the PAA’s suggested fees, which ensures they have fair rates. To add, you may contact them if you’re unable to seek help due to your financial situation.

Besides that, most employee assistance programs cover their psychological services. So you may have to talk to your employer regarding your plan’s benefits coverage.

Another thing we suggest is confirming with the staff regarding insurance coverage since they only offer direct billing for some services. It would also be an advantage to include payment methods for convenience.

It’s worth highlighting that they have a team of psychologists trained to work with the mental health concerns of first responders and veterans.

Due to the daily stresses on the job, it’s good to know that they have people to rely on.

Summit Counselling’s unique approach has been received positively by the clients we surveyed. In addition, the team has been well-trusted due to their professionalism.

For this reason, we recommend securing a slot at least a week in advance since they get booked faster for in-person therapy. But the good thing is they are open daily, giving you schedule flexibility.

Pros

  • Closes late on weekdays
  • Specialises in a curated therapy plan
  • Patient will be carefully matched with a psychologist
  • Has virtual sessions

Cons

  • Closed on Sundays
  • Higher prices

Andrea McTague, the founder of ShiftGrit Psychology, wanted to establish a brand of therapy that uses a curated plan to help people live the life they want. They focus on online therapy sessions to make them more accessible to Albertans.

The process starts with their psychologist asking you questions to understand your history. After that, they will conclude the cause and explain the following steps to you.

The good thing about this is that first-time patients don’t have to worry about what they want to talk about. In addition, we believe the approach helps nervous people relax since they won’t feel pressured to speak.

Moreover, they will match you with a psychologist based on your needs. If you’re unhappy with your match, they will give you a different one to ensure a positive experience.

For instance, the clients we talked with liked the personable approach. They also mentioned that they felt safe discussing their issues due to the team’s inviting nature.

We’re glad they offer direct billing to insurance. However, there are only a few insurance providers available right now.

The positive side is that you can use other providers, but you will most likely get a reimbursement. So we suggest confirming with the staff regarding insurance concerns.

A drawback is they charge just slightly higher at $216 to $225 for their registered psychologists. These prices are 50-minute sessions virtually and in person.

Overall, ShiftGrit uses a different approach which can be a good option if you’re looking for something different. Also, there are parrots in their Edmonton office that you may find interesting to ease your nervousness.
