The Top 5 Employment Lawyers in Ottawa Who Will Stand Strong for Fair Justice

  • Expertise and Specialisation - An employment lawyer must have a track record of successful cases to ensure they have the right experience and know the best legal strategies. Specialising in various areas gives them valuable insights.
  • Approach - A lawyer, regardless of who they’re representing, must show professionalism and respect throughout because building trust is essential when it comes to handling confidential information and legal cases.
  • Availability and Responsiveness - The lawyer and the staff must be prompt in answering calls and messages to ensure the clients are always in the loop, especially regarding changes.
  • Rates - Fee transparency is important when hiring a lawyer, especially if the client is seeking severance or is wrongfully terminated, which can limit their budget.

Once the resume has been approved, we only wish for a happy workplace environment, but that’s not always the case. Most of the time, labour issues aren’t simple and easy to fix, and they can be stressful and draining—worse than the actual work, even.

Most of us, if not all, have encountered not-so-nice people at work. And when it gets really bad, that leads to, let’s say, wrongful dismissal, that’s when you know you must fight for your rights.

Here are our most trusted employment lawyers in Ottawa—those who will have your back and fight for your rights. It’s about time someone advocates for you, so read on!

One of our most trusted law firms in Ottawa is Randy Ai Law Office, which specialises solely in employment law. Their areas of practice cover all bases for employees and employers, from employment contract review to wrongful dismissal.

Aside from having all areas covered, they’re one of the most experienced teams we’ve seen. They’ve represented hundreds of clients, and their team is highly qualified with strong training and educational backgrounds.

Their track record speaks for itself, as their lawyers have successfully represented clients in simple and complex cases. It was expected, given their high level of work ethic, regardless of the situation.

For example, their lawyers were professional from start to finish, working efficiently despite having numerous cases on the table. Even during their free consultations, they took the time to understand the cases, which speaks volumes about their credibility.

They’re easy to talk with, overall, and their daily office hours and 24/7 customer service are highly appreciated. Just note that they can be busy at times, as they’re high in demand, serving employees from Ottawa, Kanata, Nepean, Gatineau, Orleans, and Eastern Ontario.

“I can’t recommend Ms. Maria Cselenyi enough. I first submitted my case for a free consultation online, and soon after Maria gave me a call. She was incredibly understanding of my situation and patiently walked me through my options. Throughout the process, Maria was incredibly kind and she made this difficult period of life a lot more manageable! If anybody has Maria as your paralegal, I hope this review comforts you and reassures you what a great person and paralegal Maria is! Mann Lawyers LLP has been around for over 25 years, which is nice and all, but it’s their track record that spoke to us. Their employment lawyers in Ottawa (they have another office in Perth) managed to successfully find the best solution for clients.

From our surveys, we learned that they don’t just go for easy wins, but accept difficult cases as well. Their expertise extends to advising employees and employers, giving them the ins and outs of business practices—and they practice business law, too.

They’re a busy bunch, as they cover employment, labour, and human rights cases. While they’re pretty responsive overall, some clients have noted they weren’t the easiest to reach every time, and it’s sometimes tough to find a representative.

That’s not a common issue, though. Once you do retain a lawyer, expect clear communication, particularly regarding updates and changes in the case.

Above all, their lawyers were compassionate. Even the clients who were in really tough positions didn’t feel judged in any way.

Pros

  • Has another office in Perth, ON
  • Knows the ins and outs of businesses
  • Covers a wide range of employment law
  • Compassionate lawyers

Cons

  • Not the easiest to reach all the time

They were in my corner the whole time

“I worked with Travis Ujjainwalla and Sarah DelVillano regarding a serious employment matter. I very satisfied with their advice and service. First, I was reassured that they took the time to thoroughly review my situation. Second, I greatly appreciated the empathy and support they showed regarding my predicament. Third and finally, the advice and support I received throughout the process was timely and as far as I’m concerned, spot on. They were in my corner the whole time, and we obtained a satisfying outcome. I would recommend Mann Lawyers for any employment-related concerns you may have.”

Professionalism and guidance helped me navigate a stressful issue

“I can’t thank Filip Szadurski enough for his professionalism and guidance in helping me navigate some very stressful employment issues. He came recommended from a friend and I am thoroughly pleased with his handling of my situation and the outcomes thus far. I am very comfortable with Filip knowing he will respond quickly, should I need him again, and provide the same expert advice. I highly recommend Filip”

One of the most experienced employment law firms on our list is Merovitz Potechin LLP, which has been serving Ottawa since 1976. They’re all about providing tailored support, which we appreciate because employment issues don’t have cookie-cutter solutions.

They’ve got plenty of lawyers on the team, but those who specialise in employment law are in limited numbers. Then again, that doesn’t stop them from promptly communicating with clients.

As far as their expertise goes, they handle cases for employers and employees in various areas, including wrongful dismissal, severance package disputes, and workplace investigations.

However, their consultation fee is quite expensive compared to other employment lawyers in Ottawa. But the consult is very thorough, as they’ll review the case documents closely.

Plus, it’s worth noting that they do try to find the most cost-effective route, if possible. Just remember that in legal cases, that’s not always doable, but we appreciate that they try.

Pros

  • Open since 1976
  • Tailored support
  • Finds cost-effective solutions
  • Communicates promptly
  • Thorough consults

Cons

  • Small number of employment lawyers
  • Consultation fee is pricey

Articulate, knowledgeable, and effective

“We have been very happy with our lawyer Leanne Storms. She is an articulate , knowledgeable, effective lawyer who cares about her clients. She is a great communicator and has been realistic about what we can expect. When we had a crisis situation, she responded immediately. It is great to know that she has our back.”

Professional and supportive

“I have a great experience with Merovitz Potechin. For more than 5 years I feel I have the best service and advice. One of my friends referred me to Merovitz potechin when I asked for a good law firm. It started with Timothy Grieve who is very professional and supportive. He still takes care of my company legal matters. Moreover, I recently received a fantastic service from Noah Potechin who is also part of the team in the same firm. I highly recommend Merovitz Potechin LLP for family and friends.”

The team at Resolute Employment & Disability Lawyers has a good grasp of employment cases, as they cater to clients across Canada. All the information and knowledge they get from cases all over the region gives them plenty of expertise.

Not that they don’t already have it, because they specialise in employment law, covering various areas, like short and long-term disability, wrongful dismissal, and employment rights.

Their success rate is impressive, and they can back it up. In just a year, they’ve helped over 900 clients receive compensation, which is equal to millions of dollars.

They’re a remote-first law firm, though, so consultations and most communication will be done online or by phone, instead of meeting with your lawyer at the office.

It’s okay, since they’re always on top of things. From what we’ve observed, they communicate quickly and clearly, and they managed to support clients in tough cases, even with online conversations only.

Pros

  • Caters to clients across Canada
  • Specialises in employment law
  • High success rate
  • Communicated promptly

Cons

  • No in-office consultations

Prompt, caring, and super knowledgeable

“I worked with David, Lisette and team to come to a decision after years of getting the run around for a LTD claim with my workplace insurer. The team was prompt, caring, and super knowledgeable. They were able to support me and complete everything within a year. They made a huge impact on my life and I highly recommend seeking support from them for any of your legal needs.”

Helped us navigate when things looked hopeless

“My experience with Resolute Legal Disability Lawyers was excellent. My Lawyer, Duncan Allison, gave my case all the time and attention that it needed to be successful. He was a calming voice that my wife and I needed while we dealt with a stressful situation over many months. He gave us next steps to take and helped us navigate when things looked hopeless. Having David Brannen, who is the owner of the law firm personally introduce himself, creates a feeling of trust that you will be looked after. I highly recommend this firm.

We trust Leckers & Associates because of their high level of expertise in employment law, which is what they specialise in. Their record includes successful cases that have been featured in the media, including those about workplace equality.

They cover a lot of areas, such as wrongful dismissal, constructive termination, workplace harassment, and disability benefit claims. Employees are their main clients, which limits their services for employers.

But if you’re an employee, which the majority of us are, you won’t be disappointed. The professionalism they’ve shown has been impressive, as they showed compassion and patience, especially in tough and stressful cases.

Their office is in Toronto, however, which is quite a distance from Ottawa. Still, they serve residents of Canada’s capital, as well as those from the surrounding communities.

Communication-wise, they’re solid. Most clients noted their lawyers’ strong conversation skills by always giving updates about the cases.

Transparent legal fees are also their strong suit. It starts with a no-charge phone interview and offers a recovery fee basis for most cases, which doesn’t require an upfront retainer.

Pros

  • Good track record
  • Specialises in employment law
  • Transparent legal fees
  • No upfront retainer for most cases
  • No-charge phone interview

Cons

  • No office in Ottawa
  • Limited range of services

Kept me informed every step of the way

“I had a great experience working with Matthew Fisher and his senior law clerk, Eslita Ramkishun. They kept me informed every step of the way and made sure I always understood what was happening. Matthew was relentless in pushing for the best outcome and knew exactly when to make the right call. Eslita was super organized and responsive, which made everything run smoothly. In the end, I walked away with a much better deal than what was originally on the table and that’s thanks to their strategy, persistence, and support. Highly recommend if you need help with employment law.”
