Pros
- Working as an audiologist for 20 years
- Has a postdoc degree
- Worked as an audiologist for children
- Member of an NGO for hearing loss
- Active in research and education
- Office space and location is convenient
Cons
- Parking space can be limited
- Doctor is difficult to book
Dr. Carrie Scarff has a total of 20 years of experience in audiology. She has been managing Audiology Innovations Ltd for 15 years.
Her area of focus is on early diagnosis of hearing loss, tinnitus, and the effects of hearing loss on the brain.
What we find unique about her as an audiologist is her dedication to research and education. She has a postdoctoral degree aside from her Ph.D. wherein she studied auditory cortical plasticity.
Aside from that, she has also published two articles on audiology and actively gives lectures about hearing loss. She gets invited to universities and NGOs, such as the Geriatric Alberta Health Service.
She is also an active board member of Deaf and Health Alberta, a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping people with hearing issues.
We are glad to know that she also has a soft spot for children. Before establishing her clinic, she worked as a paediatric audiologist for two years at Calgary Children’s Hospital.
Her clinic is conveniently located inside the Alberta Professional Centre. Aside from being near three bus stops, there are several food restaurants in the vicinity.
Dr. Scarff is also passionate about helping patients. One of her clients who was not considering getting hearing aids was convinced to get not one but two because of her patience and thorough explanation of its benefits.
But, because of other businesses residing near the clinic, parking can be a challenge, especially during peak hours.
Dr. Scarff can also be difficult to book because of her busy schedule, so we advise clients to call the clinic up in advance to get a slot.
2. Dr. Diane Fennell – Dr. Diane Fennell Audiology Ltd.

Pros
- Business is more than 25 years old
- Honoured as an outstanding alumnus
- Worked as a university instructor
- Runs an independent clinic
Cons
- Does not cater to specialised hearing problems
- No dedicated PWD parking space
Dr. Dianne Fennell has been running an audiology clinic for more than 26 years. Her expertise is in hearing loss treatment and hearing aid fitting.
She was awarded by the University of North Texas as an outstanding alumnus in 2006 when she received her Ph.D. at Central Michigan University.
Aside from her audiology profession, Dr. Fennell also worked as a university instructor at Grant MacEwan University.
What we liked most about Dr. Fennel is that her clinic is an independent business. Therefore, patients can choose from a broader selection of hearing aids since there are more featured manufacturers.
The dedicated parking space of the clinic is spacious and is very close to it. Clients’ convenience will surely not be compromised, especially the physically challenged.
Patients love that Dr. Fennel goes above and beyond for them. One of her clients appreciates that she would visit him and his wife in Edmonton and spend a good 45 minutes thoroughly conducting evaluations and tests.
It’s worth noting, however, that Dr. Fennel offers a more limited range of audiology services than others. Clients with more specialised auditory issues should consider the other audioligists on our list.
We also noticed that they have no parking spaces for PWDs near the clinic.
3. Dr. Alyssa M.K. Fex – Calgary Hearing Aid & Audiology

Pros
- Specialises n in paediatric audiology
- Member of ASHA
- 30 years in the industry
- Lots of PWD parking spaces
Cons
- Less experienced than other clinics
- Parking space can be limited
Dr. Alyssa M.K. Fex has been in the audiology profession for more than five years.
She practises at the Calgary Hearing Aid & Audiology, along with other audiologists and hearing aid practitioners. The clinic’s 30 years of experience is a testament to its impressive track record of excellent patient care.
Aside from providing diagnoses and fitting hearing aids, Dr. Fex specialises in paediatric audiology. Parents that have children with special hearing needs would love her.
Since 2016, Dr. Fex has been a certified and a member of The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
One of Dr. Fex’s clients with a Cookie Bite hearing loss loved that she was able to treat his condition. More than that, he appreciated her patience in explaining her diagnosis and taking him through possible treatment routes.
However, Dr. Fex has relatively fewer years of experience than other audiologists. Clients who are critical of this aspect may consider other ear doctors.
While we love that they have lots of PWD parking spaces, it’s apparently usually full due to the fact that these are shared with patients of other clinics. We’d advise you to come early should you need a slot.
4. Dr. Bonita Chow – Tinnitus and Hearing Health Calgary

Pros
- Has more than 15 years of experience
- Trained in different tinnitus treatment disciplines
- Can cater patients with tinnitus, hyperacusis, and misophonia
- Her Clinic is five years old
- Volunteered at ARBI
- Can cater lots of PWD clients
Cons
- Relatively small parking space
- Relatively fewer staff
Dr. Bonita Chow has been providing hearing treatment and therapy services for more than 15 years. She is the founder and head of Tinnitus and Hearing Health Calgary.
Dr. Chow specialises in tinnitus treatment and is one of the few trained in multiple disciplines on tinnitus treatment. We found that she was the Canadian audiologist to complete the Tinnitus Care Provider program.
She also has a heart for volunteer work, as she was a Rehabilitation Aid Volunteer at the Association for the Rehabilitation of the Brain Injured (ARBI). Her participated in rehabilitation programs for stroke survivors, including conducting speech therapy.
Her clinic is famous for treating tinnitus and other related conditions. Dr. Chow uses Tinnitus Activities Retraining Therapy (TART), a combination of Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) and Tinnitus Activities Treatment (TAT).
In a nutshell, TART combines neurophysiological and psychosocial treatment on patients. And because of the method’s multidimensional approach, it can also treat other underlying conditions like hyperacusis & misophonia.
One of Dr. Chow’s tinnitus patients was grateful about how sher made her feel throughout several sessions. It was the first time she felt “heard, seen and valued.”
This tells us that Dr. Chow really cares about her patients. We’re glad to know that compassionate patient care is at the heart of her service.
We are also happy to know that the parking lot has several PWD spaces. With it, we can sense that they really care about their clients.
However, the general parking space of the clinic is smaller than the other clinics we have on the list. We advise clients not to visit during peak hours.
We also noticed that they have fewer staff, with only one audiologist on board. Although this is understandable since they are a new and specialised clinic, we advise clients who want to book an appointment to plan it days or weeks ahead.

Pros
- Almost 25 years of experience
- Specialises in several areas of audiology
- Also works as a university faculty
- Performers TRT
- Received an award for clinical education
- Has an easily accessible PWD ramp
Cons
- Only one audiologist in clinic
- Parking space is relatively smaller
The citizens of Calgary have been enjoying the expertise of Dr. Woolliams for 26 years. Focusing on tinnitus/sound sensitivity therapy, auditory processing and paediatric hearing care, she is currently the resident audiologist of Soundwave Hearing Care.
We discovered that she is one of the few audiologists in Canada that can provide TRT for patients. Dr. Woolliams received her tinnitus treatment certification over a decade ago.
Aside from being an audiologist, Dr. Wooliams also works as an assistant professor at The University of British Columbia. She has been imparting her knowledge to aspiring students for a decade.
In 2020, the Clinical Faculty Awards recognised her dedication to audiology and education by awarding her the Noelle Lamb Award for Excellence in Clinical Education.
Dr. Woolliams reportedly connects with her patients on a different level. Aside from giving the best tinnitus care available, one of her clients stressed she and her team made her feel understood and less isolated throughout the treatment sessions.
However, despite having a sizable team, Dr. Woolliams is the sole audiologist in the clinic. Clients needing more specialised attendance may need to allocate extra time to book her.
On a bright note, we love that their clinic has a convenient and easily accessible ramp for PWDs right in front of them.
However, their parking lot is also relatively small compared to other clinics. We don’t recommend visiting the clinic during peak hours, which usually runs from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
