Justin Trudeau Resigns as Canada’s Prime Minister
Outside of Rideau Cottage on January 6, 2025, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he’s stepping down as prime minister and Liberal Party leader, ending his nine-year term in office.
Trudeau stated, “Last night over dinner, I told my kids about the decision that I’m sharing with you today.”
He added, “I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide, competitive process.” He further stated that he’s not the best choice for the next election due to ‘internal battles’.
The announcement came after Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s deputy prime minister and finance minister, announced her exit on December 16, 2024. She was one of Trudeau’s closest allies.

Just before that, in September, the Liberal Party lost a Parliament seat during a special election in Montreal—a crucial blow that put more pressure from within the party for Trudeau to resign.
Trudeau’s stint as PM was welcomed positively, becoming Canada’s ‘Golden Boy’ in politics and a viral sensation in media and the digital space. He survived major political dilemmas, like the COVID-19 pandemic.
But his star power dimmed when his approval ratings started to decline—the housing crisis, the rising cost of living, and Donald Trump’s tariff threats certainly didn’t help.

No one knows who will succeed Trudeau.
There are popular contenders, such as Freeland, Minister of Transport and Internal Trade Anita Anand, former governor of the Bank of Canada Mark Carney, and the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Francois-Philippe Champagne.
Meanwhile, the Governor General of Canada has granted a prorogued Parliament until March 24, which is basically a pause of all parliamentary proceedings.
