Pros

  • Focuses on SMEs
  • Highly recognized law firm
  • Works with different industries
  • Caters to small business selling/buying
  • Provides competitive rates

Cons

  • Not ideal for freelancers

One of our best tax law firms in Toronto is Kalfa Law, which was founded by Shira Kalfa. She’s also a principal lawyer, which is good news as she’s highly experienced in the field.

It’s impressive that this tax law firm was nominated as Small Business of the Year in 2020 by the CanadianSME National Business Awards. Their founder was also a “Lawyer to Watch” in the 2023 Lexpert Rising Stars Awards.

Kalfa Law specializes in serving small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with values of anywhere between $1 million to $25 million. It’s impressive that they can handle high amounts of money, which means possible tax issues.

They also work with private M&A (mergers and acquisitions) and corporate-commercial law. While it shows their skills in handling large accounts, it also means they aren’t ideal for individuals with small businesses and self-employed Torontonians.

On a good note, they cater to small business owners who need tax assistance when selling or purchasing their business. Still, it’s not as comprehensive as we’d like.

The team of lawyers at Kalfa Law is well-versed in working with companies from different industries, which is something we appreciate. They work in the fields of healthcare, construction, manufacturing, and more!

It’s also a plus that they provide competitive rates despite handling many clients at once. For us, it shows their commitment to the field by helping Toronto businesses with their tax obligations.

Pros

  • Has a hands-on approach
  • Affordably-priced services
  • Caters to individuals

Cons

  • No physical office
  • Limited number of lawyers

As an owner-operated business, we like that TrevorKLaw can provide a hands-on approach for each client. Trevor Kezwer is the owner, focusing on tax law, wills and estates, and executor services.

It’s nice that Kezwer has a tonne of experience relating to Canada’s tax system. In fact, he worked at the Canada Revenue Agency and resolved many tax audits, which is one of our favourite aspects about him.

Plus, we really like how well-versed he is in various HST complicated problems. His experience in the area is what we also admire because it gives clients a lot of confidence in him.

There’s a problem we found, though. TrevorKLaw is a small practice, and it was slightly disappointing that there’s no office you can visit for walk-ins.

Also, there’s no available team of lawyers in case Kezwer isn’t available. During busy months, we believe this will be a problem when many individuals require his services.

But, on the bright side, we found his services pretty affordable, especially in a city like Toronto. We think that’s possible since his practice isn’t as big as others on our list.

On top of that, being a small firm means he can cater to individuals who need help immediately. This is something we highly appreciate.

Based on our client surveys, Kezwer has remained professional from start to finish, which is what we looked for in a tax lawyer. Some of his clients have been with him for years, which we believe shows his incredible skills and knowledge.

Pros

  • Featured by the media
  • Offers full services
  • Caters to individuals and businesses
  • Has free 10-minute consultations with student

Cons

  • No free consultation with a lawyer

Rotfleisch & Samulovitch P.C. is on our list because of their experience. Their tax lawyers have been in the business for over three decades, which takes a lot of skills and knowledge, no?

Due to their expertise, they’ve been guests on various media platforms, such as CBC, Global News, and CTV News. This recognition is impressive for us because it shows that they’re a trusted tax law firm.

Another aspect we appreciate is they cater to both businesses and individuals. It makes them accessible to many in Toronto, which we approve of!

Furthermore, we commend Rotfleisch & Samulovitch P.C. for providing full services for a wide range of tax problems. It really makes them an all-in-one service!

We like that they offer free 10-minute consultations with a law student, which can greatly help when figuring out the complexity of the tax situation. Although it’s not exactly with a lawyer, we think it’s still a good deal.

It’s also helpful that they have eight tax lawyers on the team. If there are many clients during busy seasons, we believe they can handle the workload.

Lastly, the clients we talked with appreciated that their lawyers were very professional, which eased their worries. Plus, Rotfleisch & Samulovitch P.C. lawyers offer cost-effective solutions, which is a really nice thing.

Pros

  • Has been featured in the media
  • Offers free consultations
  • Provides a low price guarantee
  • Caters to individuals and business owners

Cons

  • Has a small team
  • Not ideal for big companies

In 2009, Barrett Tax Law was established by Dale Barrett, an author and tax lecturer. As a boutique law firm, we were happy to learn that they can provide a specialized service on tax-related legal issues.

They’ve also been featured on various media platforms, like Global News, Financial Post, CBC/Radio-Canada, and Business News Network. For us, it shows that their knowledge and opinions are important and trusted by media giants.

We also love that Barrett Tax Law offers free consultations with a tax lawyer or a tax specialist. They offer this to Canadians in need of legal representation, which clearly shows their concern for clients.

Plus, we really like that they cater to both individual taxpayers and business owners. But as a small law firm, they’re not quite adept at servicing large companies.

Also, we found that they only have a small team who can assist, which can be a bummer during busy tax seasons. Still, they have a tax lawyer with a lot of background in cross-border tax issues, which is helpful for Canadians living overseas.

Finally, we commend them for providing affordable rates to clients. Barrett Tax Law promises the lowest fee guarantee, which means they will beat other firms’ quotes by 20%.

Pros

  • Offers free consultations
  • Provides payment plans
  • Offers fixed rates

Cons

  • Not ideal large businesses
  • Has a small team

For over a decade, SpenceDrake Tax Law has served Toronto, whether it’s a simple or complex tax case. Plus, their tax lawyers are really well-versed in the Canadian tax system since one is a chartered accountant.

It’s nice that they offer free consultations with a tax lawyer, which helps Canadians with tight budgets. This will go on for 20 minutes, which we think is pretty long considering it’s free.

Another thing we like is their fixed rates, which they provide in detail for better transparency. While the fees might change depending on how the case goes, we like that they always quickly update their clients.

In addition to that, we were happy that they offer payment plans for clients who need to budget their money. There’s advanced payment or monthly billing.

As for their services, they work on a wide range of tax legal problems, kind of like a full service. It’s pretty great since it means they can cater to different kinds of tax legal issues.

But the thing is, they aren’t quite equipped to handle large companies. Nonetheless, we appreciate that self-employed Canadians or small business owners can ask for legal assistance.

SpenceDrake Tax Law is, overall, an excellent choice for legal representation for us. It’s just that they have a small team of lawyers, which is a drawback during busy months.
