Top 5 Orthopaedic Specialists in Ottawa to See Before Pain Slows You Down
Food for thought: resilience can take you pretty far, but it’s not always enough in the long run. Believe me or not, that thought hit me while watching my mom sit on the couch, holding a bag of frozen peas to her knee.
Brushing off the bigger issue with a series of “I’m fine” and “Don’t worry” has a way of catching up to you or someone you care about. When joint pain, mobility issues, or even fractures start feeling like a regular occurrence, addressing them sooner rather than later really matters.
That’s why my team and I reviewed the best orthopaedic specialists in Ottawa. Keep reading to find out who can help you get the right care before the peas become a permanent fixture.

The first thing that drew us to Dr. Darryl Young is that he currently serves as Chief of Surgery at Keptville District Hospital, which speaks volumes about his medical leadership and experience.
We found that his practice is split between Keptville District Hospital and Queensway Carleton Hospital. This means that you get to have access to established surgical facilities and a team, and emergency backup is handled in trusted environments.
As for his niche, he primarily works with shoulder arthroscopy and shoulder joint replacement. On the flipside, his clinical services are usually focused on that, so you might need to look elsewhere if you have lower limb, spine, or other issues.
The good news is that he’s part of the Ottawa Orthopaedic Centre team and gets to work alongside physios, massage therapists, and sports medicine professionals. A lineup of pros like this gives you better recovery plans and can speed up rehabilitation.

Dr. Erik Ouellette holds IROM certification, reflecting his training in cutting-edge regenerative therapies. And we like that he treats patients with multiple pain sites, like your spine, shoulders, hips, knees, and other joints.
A major highlight is that he specializes in non-surgical treatment for the entire musculoskeletal system. He provides a wide range of therapeutic modalities, such as trigger point injections, myofascial techniques, epidural injections, neural therapy and ultrasound-guided injections.
So we’re talking about less invasive treatments here. But that also means he doesn’t do surgeries, or simply put, he’s not a surgeon, and can’t perform common procedures like joint replacement or fracture repair.
Still, we can’t deny that his pain management is a huge lifesaver for those who don’t need surgery, and if you’re not familiar with the treatments, he has resources or can explain them to you well, even in French.
Sustainable and long lasting results
“Extremely competent and knowledgeable Doctor. This is by far the only treatment that has given me sustainable and long lasting results compared to all the other disciplines that I have tried (physio, osteo, chiropractic, etc). 10/10 for the doctor and his staff!”

It’s reassuring to know that Dr. Sharma Sanjeev completed an orthopaedic fellowship at the Lahey Clinic focused on adult hip and knee reconstruction. This means he’s trained and equipped to handle complex arthroplasty cases beyond general residency education.
That said, if you need hip or knee replacement, you can benefit from seeing someone like Dr. Sharma, who has strong clinical experience in those procedures.
We also love that he’s within a clinic that includes physiotherapists, sports medicine physicians, and rehabilitation services. Access to this sort of team ensures you can have coordinated care from pre-op through recovery.
Here’s the thing, though; he doesn’t focus on providing non-surgical management options, so you might have to look elsewhere if you’re planning a more conservative care route.
On a positive note, you can count on his procedures to be performed in well-established settings since he has surgical privileges at The Ottawa Hospital, Queensway Carleton Hospital, and Arnprior Regional Health.

Dr. Peter Lapner has an impressive background, considering that he had his shoulder fellowship at the University of British Columbia, along with advanced visiting fellowships in Lyon, Zurich, and Nice. So, he’s exposed to complex shoulder techniques and approaches.
We have to point out that he’s an active clinical researcher, especially on improving shoulder treatment outcomes. With constant research, patients can benefit from cutting-edge evidence-based practices like rotator cuff healing, shoulder instability, and prosthetic techniques.
In other words, he’s highly reliable for more complex shoulder cases. However, he doesn’t focus on lower limbs or spine procedures, which can be a deal-breaker if you’re aiming for something more comprehensive.
But hey, we have to commend him for having to perform many procedures, given the fact that he’s part of the University of Ottawa Shoulder & ELbow Service that sees thousands of patients annually.
Treated quite well
“Dr Lapner did a full shoulder replacement on my left side. He helped me understand what was being done. Under his care I was treated quite well. When it is time for the right, I will make sure he does that one as well.”

When it comes to credentials for sports medicine and upper extremity surgery, Dr. Bogdan A. Matache is a solid pick. He completed elite fellowship training in sports medicine at NYU Langone and in upper extremity surgery at Roth McFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre.
In other words, he is highly fluent in the mechanics of athletic injuries and the detailed anatomy of shoulders and knees. On top of that, we’re impressed by his strong academic research that features knee alignment, cartilage wear, and even hip and shoulder sports medicine.
We also noticed that he performs arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery for trauma and urgent orthopedic issues.
The catch? He puts less emphasis on non-surgical care, so if you expect a more conservative care management, this might not be the top pick.
Nonetheless, we have to give him props for performing simple to complex surgeries with incredible post-op care and recovery.
Follow-up care is coordinated efficiently
“I had the opportunity to be under the care of Dr. Matache, and my experience was phenomenal. He has exceptional attention to detail, which was evident at every stage of assessment, surgical planning, and postoperative care. He also had excellent communication skills. In addition, Dr. Matache and his office demonstrate remarkable responsiveness. Inquiries are addressed promptly, follow-up care is coordinated efficiently, and the overall experience is seamless.”

Recovery has been going well
“Had ACL reconstruction surgery (including meniscal repair) with Dr. Matache and couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Surgery went great, incisions were small and healed nicely, and recovery has been going well so far. He’s super knowledgeable and easy to talk to…followed up several times post-surgery to see how I was doing. He does great work and clearly cares about his patients. Highly, highly recommend!”
