The 5 Best Ophthalmologists in Winnipeg

Qualifications – We checked their credentials, experience, and expertise to cater to their patient's needs.

Procedure and execution – We assessed their execution and approach to understanding the patient's needs and condition.

Availability and scheduling – We chose clinics that can accommodate their patients on time, have flexible schedules, and handle each patient's session efficiently.

Track record – We selected ophthalmologists with successful outcomes and treatments.

Patient care – It’s crucial to address clients with proper courtesy and acknowledge any concerns involving their services or treatment.

Price – We listed clinics with reasonable rates, considering their professional, consultation, procedure and other fees.

Squinting your eyes hard enough or blaming the sun for the weird blobs on your vision may not be enough to “fix” the issue. And leaving it without any diagnosis or care will just do more harm and eventually cause permanent damage.

In these situations, it’s best to see an eye doctor, to see better and improve your day-to-day life. Luckily, we reviewed and picked the best ophthalmologists in Winnipeg just for you!

Pros

  • Offers free consultations
  • Has an online booking system
  • Provide financing plans
  • Has an excellent track record

Cons

  • Often fully booked

At the helm of Aqua i Laser, Dr. Gdih Gdih has extensive training and experience using the latest and most advanced excimer laser platforms. He also specializes in treating glaucoma, cataract, and a wide range of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

One of the best highlights is that he has performed over 33,000 ocular procedures. And this says a lot about the scope of his expertise and the diversity of cases he has encountered.

And from our surveys, he has an excellent track record at fixing and treating patients’ poor sight and eye problems. For instance, cataract patients who wear high-grade contact lenses are now enjoying 20/20 vision after successful surgeries by Dr. Ghid.

We also appreciate that their staff and doctors are accommodating and have good bedside manners.

Although, we’re quite bummed that Dr. Ghid is often booked for weeks on end. So, walk-ins or the-week-before appointments might not be possible.

That said, we suggest you set an appointment via their online booking system so you can see the available time slots and choose the most convenient one.

We also like that they offer free consultations, which — from what we’ve seen — have helped countless patients figure out their eye conditions and have them treated before it’s too late.

Overall, we highly recommend visiting Dr. Ghid Ghid for any of your eye problems, especially for refractive procedures — he’ll help you see, to believe!

Pros

  • Has great bedside manner
  • Highly-recommended for cataract surgeries
  • Provides comprehensive explanations

Cons

  • Doesn’t have online booking
  • Some reports of long wait times

With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Stephen Brodovsky continues to specialize in cataract, corneal transplantation and complex anterior segment surgery.

We’re also impressed with his reputation and track record for restoring vision and cataract surgeries. We found that many doctors refer their patients to Dr. Stephen, and many patients put out a good word about their experience with him.

That said, these are testaments to his high-calibre expertise and success rate. We noted many successful cases, from eye shingles to connective tissue disorders and corneal transplants to surgeries with a 50/50 chance of success — his experience shines through.

Another thing we like is that he has good bedside manners, especially after hearing patients praise how warm and friendly he is to make them comfortable and reassured.

But, just a heads up, we noticed that his clinic has long wait times, with some going over an hour despite the set schedule.

And you’ll have to book an appointment at least one to two weeks before via call since they don’t have a booking system to see their availability status, which can be inconvenient for some.

Nonetheless, we applaud Dr. Stephen for his outstanding skills and track record. Plus, he provides easy-to-understand explanations about your condition, giving you a sense of control and confidence in the procedure.

Pros

  • Competent and highly skilled
  • Punctual with appointments
  • Has multiple specialties

Cons

  • Can improve entertaining questions
  • Can improve responsiveness

What we like about Dr. Robert Beldavs is his exceptional experience and skills in handling simple to complex eye conditions or problems.

He has handled cases that involve anterior segment disease and surgery, including cataract and cornea, and medical glaucoma and lid surgery. Based on our research, he has mastered his craft and takes his practice seriously — direct with diagnosis and accurate with execution.

To give you an idea, most patients feel no pain and are surprised with how fast surgeries went and how smoothly it was. They commend him for providing first-class experience, from admittance to preparation for surgery.

However, we’re quite iffy about reports regarding his lack of people skills, especially with entertaining additional questions from patients. We found that he usually directs his patients to go over the prescription or instructions he provides for any questions.

We also think his clinic should improve responsiveness since there have been complaints of unanswered calls from newer patients.

And we highly advise you to leave a message and call again before attempting to go to avoid having to wait for almost an hour and not being attended to in the end.

On a positive note, we’re glad Dr. Stephen is consistently punctual with his appointments and scheduled surgeries. Thus, so long as you secure a schedule, you can expect your appointment to push through and have your surgery done without a hitch.

Pros

  • Does thorough diagnoses and treatments
  • Highly professional and informative
  • Skilled in cataract surgeries

Cons

  • Some reports of long wait times
  • Doesn’t have a fixed schedule

Despite having only started practice in Winnipeg in 2006, Dr. John van der Zweep has proven to be one of the best at treating patients with eye conditions.

We’re impressed at how thorough he is in running tests to make an accurate diagnosis and execute an effective treatment.

It’s also admirable that he decides and acts on cases that require urgent attention instantly after results come in — and saying it saves lives isn’t an understatement.

For instance, he has identified that what was presenting as an eye issue was actually an arterial problem. He called a radiologist and insisted the patient go to the ER asap to get diagnosed, dodging the horrors of a stroke or aneurysm.

Should you consider Dr. John, we suggest you call and book an appointment at least a couple of weeks before your preferred date since their schedule isn’t fixed. And it’s best to set an early appointment since the wait times can be long, and it might eat up the entire day.

Finally, we noticed that he’s highly skilled with cataract surgeries and always makes it a point to establish a comfortable and safe space for you. Plus, he always entertains the questions you throw at him!

Pros

  • Specializes in eyelid surgery
  • Provides aftercare phone calls
  • Doesn’t rush consultation

Cons

  • Closed on weekends
  • Doesn’t have online booking
  • Has long wait times

A stand out about Dr. Matthew Lee-Wing specializes in eyelid surgery. It’s also great that he has experience with tear duct surgery, eye socket surgery and cataract extractions.

To give you an example, he has worked on entropic lower eyelid surgery and bilateral brow lift on the same patient, and in both cases, the surgery was successful. The same is true for upper lid surgeries and eyelid lift surgery for baggy or sagging eyelids.

It’s also worth mentioning that Dr. Matthew does aftercare phone calls to check up on you after surgery. He would follow up on the same evening as your surgery and be open to questions and concerns — a plus in our book!

Although, we think it’s quite a shame that his clinic doesn’t have an online booking system that can show their availability status. You’ll have to personally call them to book an appointment and check the best time for you to go, especially since they’re closed on weekends.

We also suggest you clear up as much of your schedule as you can on the day you go since you might have to wait longer than you’d expect.

Still, we have to give Dr. Matthew props for not rushing consultations and doing in-depth research on your condition to make an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
