Pros

  • Sustainability advocate
  • Incorporates designs with virtual reality
  • Built Manitoba’s first privately-built LEED-certified home

Cons

  • Doesn’t cater to commercial clients

In 2006, Dueck Builders was established, focusing on building infill homes. What we found impressive is their business grew through word of mouth, which we think shows how many happy clients they’ve had.

An admirable quality is their focus on building sustainable homes. They design homes with good airflow for better air quality and those that will require little maintenance.

Impressively, they built Manitoba’s first privately-built LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) home. That entails they build resilient homes that conserve energy, reduce waste, and reduce carbon emission—nice, no?

Not to mention that a sustainable home means paying less for cooling and heating for many years. For us, that’s an essential part of building a new home because it can future-proof your monthly finances!

Another great aspect is they use VR (Virtual Reality) goggles for clients to see their new homes realistically. Their designs are incorporated with VR, which is incredible since clients can make necessary changes before construction begins!

Their clients have praised the team for finishing their projects within the budget. It didn’t diminish the quality, though, which we approve of!

However, they don’t work on commercial properties. But they work on new home builds, regardless if that’s a cottage or three-storey high!

Pros

  • A+ BBB rating
  • Specializes in home renovations
  • Certified Master Renovators

Cons

  • Some reports of delayed quotations
  • Doesn’t specialize in large commercial projects

De Vries Construction & Renovation is a family-owned company based in Winnipeg with over 35 years in the industry. They serve residential and commercial clients.

They are a BBB-accredited company with an impressive A+ rating. Besides that, they are certified Master Renovators, ensuring that they comply with high standards in construction.

Their services include construction, renovation, and refurbishment, which makes them ideal for home upgrades. They work on basement developments, kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, and any room in the house!

One of our favourite aspects is their transparency. They provide detailed quotations, ensuring that each client will only pay what they were quoted.

In fact, previous clients mentioned that they were given thorough explanations regarding the estimates. But there were slight hiccups for potential clients due to not receiving a quote immediately.

We appreciate their warranty, which is two years for workmanship. On top of that, they offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee, which benefits clients unhappy with the final results.

Not to worry, though, because De Vries Construction & Renovation has excellent work quality. Their attention to detail is impeccable, which was noted by the people we spoke with.

However, we noticed that they focus more on home renovations and don’t quite specialize in large commercial builds. But we found their renovations and refurbishments are of top-notch quality!

Pros

  • Established in 1979
  • Works on large construction jobs
  • Wide range of services

Cons

  • Doesn’t specialize in residential projects
  • Busy company; scheduling my take while

Westland Construction Ltd has been around since 1979, specializing in commercial and industrial projects. Not only do they work in Winnipeg, they also build projects in other Manitoba cities.

An impressive aspect is they also work on institutional construction, historic restoration, renovation, and expansion. Their wide client list earns them points in our book, which includes McDonald’s, the University of Manitoba, and the Norbert Community Centre.

They offer construction management, which means they are at the forefront of planning. This includes preparing bid packages and awarding contracts, ensuring only good contractors will work on the job.

Additionally, their service includes general contracting, so they will hire, supervise, and manage the hired subcontractors. Their scope of services is pretty comprehensive, making them ideal for large commercial jobs.

Furthermore, they do structural and civil contracting. We appreciate that they are highly experienced in working with and for electrical and mechanical contractors—that leads to a more effective job, in our opinion!

Clients have been happy with their professionalism; even the subcontractors were complimented for their great work. For us, that shows their effective supervision and management skills.

A minor issue is they don’t work on residential properties. Westland Construction Ltd is also a busy company since they work on large construction jobs, so hiring them may take a while.

Pros

  • Specializes in home remodelling
  • Great eye for detail
  • Excellent communicators

Cons

  • Doesn’t work on commercial projects
  • Doesn’t do new home construction

Valdek Construction was established in 2014 in Winnipeg, specializing in residential projects. They do renovations, remodelling, and home additions.

Despite having a small team compared to other construction companies on our list, we appreciate that it doesn’t diminish their workmanship quality. They’ve been noted for their high-quality work with a great eye for detail.

Moreover, they were praised for their thorough design process. The clients we surveyed liked their open communication regarding design ideas, which is a good quality in a contractor!

One of their key services is remodelling, whether it’s the basement, bathroom, or kitchen. We like how well-experienced they are in adding features like gyms, bars, home offices, and laundry rooms to make the basement useful and stylish!

Aside from new home additions, they also work on full renovations. Frankly, we were impressed with their workmanship and how they can make any space look elegant.

A downside we found is they don’t work on new home constructions. That limits their services, sadly.

It is also unfortunate they don’t cater to commercial clients. If you have a small business in Winnipeg, you may need to look elsewhere for renovation.

Let’s move on to the positive aspects because we want to highlight Valdek Construction’s excellent communication with clients. For us, that shows their professionalism, which earns praise from us.

Pros

  • Works on large construction jobs
  • Has an in-house design team
  • Provides virtual check-ins

Cons

  • Doesn’t build standalone houses
  • Doesn’t do remodellings

Iris Construction Management has over 30 years of expertise in the industry. Their specialization is in commercial projects and they can work on large jobs.

Moreover, they have worked on projects as large as 120,000 sq ft, which definitely left us impressed. But they still accept small jobs, which is ideal for small businesses.

They have worked with various businesses, including restaurants, offices, dental practices, beauty salons, and multi-family residences. However, they don’t specialize in standalone houses since they don’t cater to residential clients.

A standout aspect is their design process, which is done by their in-house designers! They provide a branding guide, an essential part when building a new office or store to ensure the space will fit the type of business.

Additionally, they offer construction management, which we found convenient as they will take care of every aspect of the project! That includes coordinating with architects and electricians, finding subcontractors, and applying for permits.

We were also glad to find that busy clients don’t need to visit the construction site regularly. They can check in virtually and in real-time to see what’s happening on-site—this is possible weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.

A small hiccup for commercial clients is Iris Construction Management doesn’t do remodellings. They renovate, though, and will willingly work within your budget.
