Must Be The Place

Contact Information: (204) 284-7449

Operating Hours:

  • Thursday – Monday: 7:00 pm – 2:00 am
  • Tuesday – Wednesday: Closed

Price Range: Up to $20

This new place in town does not disappoint. Must Be The Place is the Winnipeg bar that we love when celebrating our own individuality and creativity because everything’s so unique.

The place has a cozy vibe, with themed nights that keep everyone entertained. Everyone’s encouraged to express themselves, so bring out your A-game in this Winnipeg bar!

You’ll even build your own sandwiches and chips, and you’ll choose your own ingredients by picking your choices on a piece of paper. The drinks are delicious, too, especially the refreshing Torontoooo cocktail.

Pro Tip:

If you’re a girl caught by a surprise visit (you know, that time of the month), the bar provides free tampons. The owners of this bar (all women) make sure that this is a safe space for everyone.

The Basement

Website: https://www.basementwpg.com/

Address: 3740 Portage Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3K 1A1, Canada

Contact Information: Website’s contact form

Operating Hours:

  • Sunday – Thursday: Closed
  • Friday – Saturday: 7:00 pm – 12:00 pm

Price Range:

  • Food and drinks: $20 – $30
  • Live shows: $15 – $100 (average prices, subject to change depending on the show and ticket type)

The Basement is a hidden speakeasy only for the people who know where to look. It’s actually inside The Corral, which looks like a cleaning room—there are actual cleaning supplies inside.

Inside, the vibe feels like a prohibition bar (but this one’s actually legal) and has a chill vibe. Here, drinks aren’t the only thing you’ll be looking forward to because live performances (comedy acts, burlesque shows, and live music) are the stars.

The cocktails are really good and make the perfect companion during the live shows. The Smoked Old Fashioned is a particular favourite because it matches the atmosphere of the bar.

Pro Tips:

Once you get inside The Corral, pull the brown mop handle to open the door (it’s beside the sink). Then, just head down the stairs, and you’ll see The Basement (once you see the mirrors, you’re on the right floor).

You need to purchase tickets for the live performances. But if you just want to have a drink, you don’t need to purchase one and can come by after the show.

This casual hangout is especially thrilling during the NHL playoffs (don’t forget to wear your team jersey!). There are a lot of TVs inside, so anyone can have a good time.

Make sure your belly’s not full before coming here—there are chicken wings, sandwiches, and local beers. Maybe you can participate in the Extreme Wing Challenge if you’re into (really) spicy wings and be crowned the champion.

Pro Tip:

You can join the draw pot here and win. The prize can reach over $900 sometimes. So, head over and drop your name for their 6:15 Draw!

Shannon’s Irish Pub and Eatery makes delicious food that is perfectly paired with beer. The homemade chips are worth a try, and we always like to add poutine for only $4.

Solera is a hidden bar in South Osborne, located inside Tabula Rasa. To get inside, slowly push the bookshelf to reveal this speakeasy, which has a stunning interior.

Indulge yourself in Mediterranean and Spanish-inspired dishes, specializing in small bites you can share with a friend. If you’re feeling fancy, try the oysters with Gold Osetra Caviar.

For drinks, Blue Monday is a popular choice because it’s uniquely presented. There’s a negroni section if you want a strong drink, but you can try the Fog Cutter cocktail is a must-try if you want a refreshing and zesty drink.

Pro Tip:

You can save some money when you visit on a Tuesday for half off on bottled wines, and on Wednesdays, oysters are only $1.50 per piece.

Bask in carefully curated cocktails at this relaxing lounge. The main characters in this hangout spot are cigars (and strong drinks), which are thoughtfully chosen so you can have the most luxurious experience.

There’s a good selection of cigars you can choose from, and you can ask the bartender to serve you the best cocktail to pair them with. Tequila Me Softly has that smokey notes that goes well with cigars.

It’s also an ideal hangout spot, especially at night (or after work), when you can enjoy the sounds of live music. You also don’t have to be a cigar aficionado to drop by—you can enjoy your drink with some small bites (the charcuterie board is our favourite).

Pro Tip:

Since the Sampling Room doesn’t have an extensive cigar collection compared to the Thomas Hinds Tobacconist, you can ask the staff if you can purchase one from their store. But this is only possible if they’re not busy.

King’s Head

At King’s Head, you’re in for a culinary journey while holding a glass of beer. From classic pub food like fish and chips to mouthwatering curry meals, there’s something to satisfy every Winnipegger.

You can get a Guinness here, of course (it is an Irish pub, after all), but you can also choose from a selection of local beers. If you’re feeling bougie, there are wines and cocktails available.

Pro Tips:

Check their calendar of events to keep yourself updated with live performances at the pub. There are live music and karaoke nights.

You can bring your pooch to their dog-friendly patio. It’s the perfect stop after a walk around the area.

Darling Bar

Address: 171 McDermot Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0S1, Canada

Contact Information: [email protected]

Operating Hours:

  • Monday: Closed
  • Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday: 5:00 pm – 12:00 am
  • Thursday – Saturday: 5:00 pm – 1:00 am

Price Range: $20 – $30

There’s an incredible speakeasy you have to visit in the Exchange District called Daring Bar. Once you enter the door surrounded by brick stones, head downstairs (there are small signs written on the wall).

Their theme is a candlelit bar, so it’s pretty dark, but it perfectly adds to the intimate atmosphere (perfect for date nights or after-work hangouts). The rooftop also has a nice ambience, where you’ll be surrounded by buildings downtown.

With a good selection of curated drinks, you can find something you like, whether it’s a strong drink or something light and fresh. Our team particularly likes New York, New York, a two-toned cocktail that has a nice hint of red wine.

Pro Tip:

Check their socials for events—some require tickets, so you’ll need to purchase them first. Sometimes, they also close their bar for private events, which they update guests through Instagram.

Leopold’s Tavern

Address:

Contact Information: Contact form on the website

Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday: 11:00 am – 2:00 am

Price Range: $10 – $20

Ever wondered if you can bring your kid to a pub? Well, Leopold’s Tavern is the answer to that! Kids are welcome here as long as they’re with an adult and can stay until eight in the evening.

You have to try their Leo’s Fizz, which is a vodka-based seltzer that comes in rotating flavours. Always check their seasonal cocktails—we were lucky to have tried their Fuzzy Peach drink for spring, a fruity and refreshing drink.

This is also the kind of place you go to for some filling meals. A plate of chicken wings is our staple for this pub (lemon pepper with buffalo ranch sauce is our go-to), as well as their classic poutine (the gravy is rich and thick).

Pro Tip:

If you want to book them for private events or have a question, check their website. They don’t have phones in all of their bars, so you’ll have to contact them online or in-person.

Patent 5 Distillery is the kind of place you go to for some award-winning drinks. No wonder their gins and vodkas are delicious, especially when mixed with various ingredients to make the best curated cocktails.

Their Tall Tales menu is worth trying out, with its creative and strong cocktails. The ’67 Impala is delicious with cherry notes and Lady of the Lake is for you if you want fruity elements.

With its warm ambiance, this spot is perfect for a relaxing after-work hangout—or if you just want to unwind. It’s cozy, with a little bit of a speakeasy vibe going on.

Pro Tip:

Check their distillery for some exclusive spirits you can purchase since some might not be available in other stores. Their colour-changing Purple Blossom Gin is a must-try.
