Pros
- A BBB-accredited firm
- Offer industrial design patents
- Has affordable and transparent pricing
- Has a very accommodating team
Cons
- Has a small team
Stemp & Company has over 45 years of legal expertise and service experience in every case. Their team of lawyers and paralegals services for patents, trademarks, corporate, real estate, corporate, commercial, and civil litigation.
We like that they have a grade A+ accreditation by Better Business Bureau. And we think this is a good indication that they’re reliable and offer quality services.
Notably, they also offer industrial design patents to assist clients with preparing, filing, and prosecuting design patent applications.
And it’s a plus, especially for businesses and individuals who have had someone infringe on their design patent.
In addition, their work ethics and accommodating nature left a good impression on us. For instance, they respond to questions immediately, anticipate future needs, and even meet clients on the street to quickly sign some papers.
On the downside, we’re just a bit iffy that they only have a small team with one lawyer and two paralegals. This matter leads us to think that they won’t be able to juggle as many clients as possible without affecting the quality of their services.
Finally, we appreciate their affordable and transparent pricing since you won’t get blindsided by a follow-up invoice or hidden charges after their services.

Pros
- Proficient in nine languages
- Has a large and diverse team
- Prompt drafts and documents
- Has an online booking system
Cons
- Only one lawyer for intellectual property
Since its establishment in 1988, Carscallen LLP continues to provide legal counsel and representation for different areas of law — most are suitable for business.
It’s good to note that they are well-informed of historical and current realities, politics, and particulars of Alberta’s business environment. That said, most clients experience easy transitions in complying with amendments with the help of Carscallen LLP.
On top of that, we like that they provide excellent representation for private individuals or small business owners without being intimidating and intense.
We also appreciate their diligence in entertaining and getting back to you promptly, even during a vacation.
Furthermore, we are happy they draft and submit much-needed paperwork promptly. This efficient time management has given clients a sigh of relief, especially for those in a rush.
Another thing we like is that they have a large and diverse team of lawyers with just as many assistants and associates to accommodate their clients. Also, they are fluent in nine languages – a plus for inclusivity!
However, it’s unfortunate that they only have one lawyer who handles their intellectual property services.
Lastly, aside from calling or emailing Carscallen LLP, we like how convenient it is to book a consultation through their online booking system.

Pros
- Has a large team
- Offers full range of patent services
- Has a client extranet
Cons
- Slightly pricier than other firms
- Closed on Saturdays to Mondays
- Some complaints on overall performance
With over 100 years of experience, Field Law has provided a comprehensive range of legal and complementary services.
We like that they have expertise in intellectual property and emerging technology, corporate and commercial matters, litigation and dispute resolution, and more areas of law.
Moreover, we are impressed that they offer a full range of patent services to help you apply, strengthen and protect your patentable innovations.
Fortunately, they have more than 120 lawyers and 180 supporting staff to work with each client and each case.
Although, we are concerned with the consistency of each lawyer’s performance after hearing some complaints about their competency. We noted that some lawyers only provide the bare minimum and don’t offer the best options to their clients.
It has also come to our attention that they are more expensive than other firms, making them less accessible for clients with a restricted budget.
In addition, we also heard some reports of overcharging, particularly with the final invoice given to the clients with uninformed charges.
On a better note, what we like most about Field Law is their highly-secured client extranet through their website.
Conveniently, this feature allows you to post documents, communicate with lawyers and paralegals, track their progress, and look into specific matters — all at the tip of your fingers.

Pros
- Offers international and local patent services
- Has a large team of lawyers
Cons
- Some complaints on overall performance
- Can improve on customer service
- Some reports of unresponsiveness
Parlee McLaws LLP offers and creates legal solutions for various service areas.
Notably, they have a large team of diverse lawyers who offer a long list of services. On that note, we like that they also have a decent number of lawyers specializing in intellectual property law.
Moreover, they assist clients through the entire international or local patent process.
We also appreciate their range of services, including performing initial patentability assessments, preparing and filing patent applications, and responding to issues raised by the Patent Office.
Another thing we love about Parlee McLaws LLP, their lawyers and agents can help you strategically develop and leverage a patent portfolio.
Plus, they tailor-fit their services to accommodate your needs and budget.
On the downside, we noticed some inconsistencies with the overall performance of a few of their lawyers. For instance, some clients mention occurrences of lawyers cutting corners with applications and documents.
Furthermore, we also think they need to improve customer service, particularly with going through the process and whatnot of the case with their clients. We also noted that there are tendencies of late responses and follow-ups on the firm’s end.
Overall, kudos to Parlee McLaws LLP for the scope and reach of their patent services and connections with experts to provide valuable legal solutions — they are a solid choice.

Pros
- Specializes in intellectual property law
- Offers a full range of local and international patent services
- Provides services for many technical sectors
Cons
- Some uncertainties with availability
True to its name, Hicks & Associates Intellectual Property consists of a team of lawyers specializing in intellectual property law.
In addition, they pretty much cover everything, from patents to industrial designs to domain names and internet law.
We like that they protect the clients’ inventions, designs, and technology by preparing, filing, and prosecuting patent and industrial design applications.
Plus, we are impressed with the firm’s extensive network of foreign associates to provide local and international patent services.
Notably, we appreciate that their services are open to many technical sectors, such as life sciences, mechanical, medical devices, chemical, and computer technology.
However, we’re just a bit iffy that there may be uncertainties with the lawyers’ availability in the office, considering that their main office is in Canmore.
On that note, we suggest clients call the firm to check the lawyers’ whereabouts before coming in for a consultation.
Regardless, they still have a decent number of administrative members that can assist you with preliminary or primary services for your patent applications or concerns.
Ultimately, we believe that Hicks & Associates Intellectual Property is a one-stop shop for patents. And also a go-to if you’re looking for legal assistance and solutions for your intellectual property concerns.
