Stepping into Doraku feels like finding a hidden treasure for genuine food lovers. Operating as a retro Japanese restaurant since 1992, they serve up incredibly fresh Omakase Sashimi alongside custom chef-selected nigiri. 

They even offer delightful seasonal specials like fiddlehead tempura and bonito carpaccio.

When I dropped by last week, the Atlantic Roll blew me away with its buttery bluefin tuna and rich avocado. The kitchen also accommodates vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets upon request, so every guest leaves happy and full.

A few diners, however, mention that portion sizes feel a bit small for the price point. Still, the unmatched craftsmanship and easy takeout options keep me coming back every time.

Easily among the very best Japanese restaurants I’ve eaten at in many months of traveling Eastern Canada. The izakaya vibe was legit, the service was stellar, but the food? It’s absolutely on point and rivals some of the best izakayas I’ve been to on the West Coast, NYC, and even Japan. I was actually surprised at how good the experience was after quite a few mediocre Japanese restaurant experiences in Quebec and the Maritimes. If you like really good Japanese bar/food experiences, don’t sleep on this place!

One downside is that sashimi platters can sometimes take quite long to arrive during peak dining hours. However, the vast selection makes it a handy choice for big group cravings.

Built on a strict philosophy of freshness, the restaurant serves up classic hand rolls, chirashi don, and specialty items like the Black Nova Dragon.

A close friend of mine recently picked up their Nova Grand Maki platter for a family party, and the sushi was remarkably fresh. They also serve Japanese poke bowls, crisp gyoza, and savory takoyaki for extra variety.

However, the loud background music inside can make quiet dining a bit tricky. 

If you want to avoid the noise, online ordering through Square makes grabbing takeout quick and hassle-free.

I got the  medium sushi set and subbed a spicy tuna roll for the salmon avo roll. I am a sushi/sashimi person more so than a roll person but I was curious about their rolls as well. 10/10 fresh fish.
