Pros
- 24/7 customer support
- 3-year price guarantee
- No contracts and data caps
- Sets a specific time for installation
Cons
- Not available for standalone houses
- Some customer support complaints
Moby is an independent telecommunications company that provides fibre-optic internet to apartments, condominiums, and commercial buildings. They have been providing services in Calgary since 2019.
We should mention first that unless you live in an apartment or condo, you can’t avail of their services. This is because they don’t service standalone residential buildings.
Their office has a convenient location in downtown Calgary. So if you’re located there too, the Moby team can get to you faster, plus they have 24/7 customer service.
Contrary to that, we heard instances of unsatisfactory customer support. For example, some clients told us the support team failed to call back immediately regarding connectivity issues.
On the other side, the team sets up a specific time for installation. We believe this is highly convenient instead of setting up a window time.
If Moby is not yet available in your building, you will have to ask your building management for permission first. If allowed, it will be added to Moby’s waiting list.
As for their internet plans, you can avail of the lowest $65 a month for 300 Mbps. On the other hand, the fastest plan is up to 2500 Mbps for $165 a month.
Additionally, we like the free installation and no data caps on all packages. They also have a 3-year price guarantee, wherein your internet bills will remain the same for three years.
We appreciate their contract buyout offer, where you can get up to $360 if you switch from your current provider. The credit will apply to your first bill with Moby.
Lastly, we like that they have no contracts, so you’re not financially committed for a long time. We think it’s convenient that you can change providers if you’re unhappy with service and connection.

Pros
- Focuses on rural areas
- No installation fee
- No contract and data limit
Cons
- Fastest speed has limited availability
- Location dependent
Established in 2016, ICYNET Communications focuses on its mission to provide internet to Alberta’s rural areas. Apart from Okotoks and surrounding areas, they also serve areas in Foothills County.
We highly appreciate its focus on servicing hard-to-reach areas. However, it’s better to check with them first if they can reach your location since there is a limit to the places they serve.
ICYNET Communications use fixed wireless, which is the form of internet in areas without fibre infrastructure. We think this is a convenient option because there is also no need for telephone service or satellite to install the internet.
If you require their services, the technicians will visit your location to ensure they can provide a good internet speed. In addition, they will check the minimum signal levels through a wireless survey before discussing the installation process.
But note that if the area doesn’t reach the required signal levels, it will be impossible to provide the services to you. The good thing is they are continuously expanding to reach more areas in the future.
Another thing we like is that they have four plans available. The cheapest is $59 with 10 Mbps download speed and 5 Mbps upload speed.
The fastest is the Advanced+ with 35 Mbps download speed, priced at $119 a month. However, this plan’s availability depends on the location.
Additionally, there is no contract, data limit, and installation fee. We also like that there’s no long-term commitment if you decide to switch providers.
Ultimately, despite the difficulties in terrain and distance from cell towers, we like that they explore other locations to extend their services. Also, many clients praised the excellent and prompt customer service.
3. Shaw Communications

Pros
- Over 50 years in the industry
- Has fibre optic internet
- Has thousands of wifi hotspots
- Offers bundle plans
Cons
- $50 activation fee
- Price increase after 2 years
For over 50 years, Shaw Communications has continued to expand through innovation with its various products and services. As a large company, it has a staggering 9,000 employees.
One of the advantages of a large telecommunications company is reaching many customers in different areas. We found it impressive that Shaw Communications has over 450,000 wifi hotspots, which makes it easy to find a wireless network.
Their cheapest plan is $79 a month for 250 Mbps, while the more premium one is $129 a month for 1.5 Gbps.
It’s worth noting that all plans come with fibre internet, which is currently the fastest internet service available.
However, these prices are introductory offers to new customers valid for 24 months. After that, the payment will increase monthly.
Also, a $50 activation fee is required for new customers, which is non-refundable. A $50 installation fee is also charged for the internet, phone, and TV services.
You should also know that not all packages are available in all regions despite the company’s size. Therefore, it would be better to check if they service your area first.
On the other note, they offer internet and TV bundles with a 4K TV player for the best picture quality. But we recommend reading the fine print since these prices will also increase after 24 months.
We recommend checking the customer support responsiveness in your area. Shaw Communications is a large company with multiple offices, and not all locations will have the same level of customer service.
4. Verge IP

Pros
- Available open term plans
- 24/7 customer support
- Unlimited usage
- Excellent customer support
Cons
- $99 installation fee
- Slower internet speed
Verge IP provides residential and business internet and phone services. It continues to expand to give Calgarians more service options and available locations.
Booking an appointment is easy through their website, where you can communicate and ask about any concerns regarding their services.
We appreciate their cheapest plan, which costs 29.99 a month for 15 Mbps. But we want you to know the upload speed for this is only 1.1 Mbps.
Generally, a good upload speed for video streaming starts at 2 Mbps, and higher-quality videos may lag at only 1.1 Mbps. Also, the price is only for the first three months, which will become $49.99 monthly.
As for the fastest speed for residential customers, they only offer up to 75 Mbps. The price will also go up after the first three months.
But if you need it for business purposes, they offer up to 300 Mbps for $99 a month. This package will have a lock-in period of three years.
We like that all internet plans at Verge IP have unlimited usage. In addition, you can add a home phone and Verge TV Select at an additional cost.
Moreover, they have open-term plans, some with a 2-year lock-in period. Hence, we suggest being attentive when choosing if you prefer having the freedom to switch providers when necessary.
Unfortunately, all internet installations have a $99 fee. We think this might discourage some potential customers due to the high price.
On a positive note, their customer support team is available 24/7. We also appreciate that they try to complete all inquiries if the call comes in by noon.
Finally, many clients praised the excellent and responsive customer service. There haven’t been many connectivity issues, and when there are some, the support team manages to fix them right away.

Pros
- Provides fibre-optic internet
- Multiple plans available
- Offers a 8 Gbps option
Cons
- $99.95 professional installation fee
- Some plans have data caps
Bell Canada, mainly called Bell, is a large telecommunications company founded in 1880. Yes, that’s right, it started as a telephone company and has come a long way since then.
We appreciate that they provide pure fibre internet – considered the fastest in the world! In addition, they offer two fibre internet technologies.
One is they provide fibre to the neighbourhood terminal. The second is installing it straight to your home, resulting in faster internet speed.
As for their packages, they have a lot of options. Our favourite is the 8 Gbps plan for its impressive download and upload speed.
Additionally, it has unlimited usage and a Giga hub included. The Giga hub is an extender to ensure all rooms in your home get fast internet speed.
But if you only need light usage, they have a 10 Mbps plan. However, this has a monthly usage of 100 GB.
It’s pretty disappointing that Bell charges a $99.95 professional installation fee. But you have the option to install it yourself.
Furthermore, we must mention that Bell will reduce the speeds after 350 GB of use. Hence, we recommend that you confirm all details with the staff to prevent getting surprised by the fine print.
Lastly, their modems have a one-time rental fee priced at $199.95. Not all plans are available in all locations, so check first which one applies to you.
