Pros
- Has 11 years of experience
- Works as assistant professor
- Published articles and books
- Affiliated with two clinical organisations
- Served as OMFS organisation leader
Cons
- An hour or more late for appointments
- Reports of rude service from receptionists
Dr. Miller Smith has been an oral maxillofacial surgeon (OMFS) for more than ten years. He received his medical degree and OMFS training certificate at the University of Michigan.
The treatment of complex jaw surgery, obstructive sleep apnea surgery, and surgical reconstruction of tumour and head & neck cancer are his areas of focus as an oral surgeon.
We are glad that aside from his service as an oral surgeon, he shares his expertise as a clinical assistant professor in two universities – the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary.
He also seems to be a lifelong learner. We are amazed that the 15 studies he and his affiliates made received more than 10,000 times of citations.
Dr. Smith participates in the Alberta Children’s Hospital’s Cleft Lip and Palate/Craniofacial and Multidisciplinary Dental programmes and Tom Baker Cancer Centre’s Head and Neck Tumour Board, in addition to his role in the academe.
He also served as the President of the Canadian Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Dr. Smith’s patients love his knowledgeable and confident aura. One client, who had an overbite that has affected her for decades, recalled that his positive attitude helped her become more reassured about the procedure.
But, some clients mentioned that Dr. Smith is usually over an hour late for appointments. We also found cases of rude receptionists–especially during long waiting lines.
It might be wise for Dr. Smith and the clinic to revisit their daily patient load in order to address these issues.

Pros
- Has 11 years of experience
- Specialises in complex surgeries
- An active member of academe
- Board member at a cancer centre
Cons
- Long waiting hours
- No PWD parking space nearby
For more than a decade, Dr. Graham Cobb of Mahogany Oral Surgery has been a dedicated oral surgeon for the Calgary community.
Dr. Cobb got his fellowship at the Legacy Emanuel Hospital and the Providence Portland Cancer Center. After that, he enrolled at the Technical University of Munich to undergo training on microvascular reconstructive surgery.
Backed by his numerous training, Dr. Cobb specialises in complex surgical procedures on oral cavity and facial surgery and reconstruction.
Before moving to Calgary, he also held a professorial post at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at Western University.
We are glad that Dr. Cobb continues to be an avid educator and trainer in this field. He teaches undergrad students at the University of Alberta and the training residents at the Foothills Medical Centre Dental Clinic.
Aside from that, he is also a member of the Head and Neck Tumour Board of the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.
One of the parents, who had his child undergo oral surgery, was delighted when Dr. Cobb spent some time chatting with them after the surgery to confirm if his daughter was comfortable during the procedure. They felt that the doctor cares about his patients.
That said, other clients complain of long waiting times during appointment days. Apparently, even though some were told to arrive an hour earlier, they still ended up waiting for an hour or two to be seen.
We also discovered that the dedicated parking space for PWD is quite far from the clinic. We advise patients experiencing any mobility challenges to be with someone that can assist them.

Pros
- Has 13 years of experience
- An associate professor for four years
- Worked at four hospitals
- Clinic accepts emergency cases
- Has ample PWD parking space
Cons
- No notifications for delayed appointments
- Cases of patients not receiving post-op calls
Following his residency at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Lee Darichuk has been an oral surgeon for over 13 years. He also worked at the said university as an associate professor for more than 4 years.
Before working at Face Forward Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, he served as an oral surgeon in four other hospitals and dental centres for over six years.
We are pleasantly surprised that Dr. Darichuk’s clinic accepts after-hours emergency services. Most of the clinics we’ve checked out are closed on weekends, even for emergencies.
Face Forward, his clinic, also has ample parking spaces, especially for PWDs.
Patients of Dr. Darchuk appreciate his thoughtfulness. One client who had his mother checked by the doctor for a mouth ulcer recalled that the doctor chatted with them before and after the procedure to show that he understood and cared about them.
We’re just disappointed that Dr. Darchuk apparently has the same issue as other renowned surgeons – he’s notorious for being late. It also doesn’t help that patients aren’t notified of this, which means they waste a good part of the day waiting to be seen.
Aside from that, the clinic is reportedly hard to contact for post-operation queries.
Although we understand that oral surgeons can be busy, their staff should be sensitive and transparent about the patients’ time.
4. Dr. Kevin Robertson – Foundation Oral Surgery

Services: Dental Implants, Corrective Jaw Surgery, Wisdom Teeth Removal, Bone Graft, Diagnosis and Management of Oral Pathology, Surgical Management of TMJ dysfunction,
Jaw Advancement Surgery for Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Paediatric Maxillofacial Surgery, and Cleft Surgery

Pros
- Had fellowship abroad
- Had special training for treating craniofacial syndromes
- Published academic papers
- Works in other clinics in Calgary
Cons
- Less experienced than other renowned surgeons
- Parking area is not near the clinic
- Different daily operating hours
Dr. Kevin Robertson of Foundation Oral Surgery is an example of a doctor who is passionate about his work. We found out that after completing his fellowship at Loyola University Medical Centre in Chicago, he did a post-fellowship in Australia.
During his stay in Melbourne, Dr. Robertson had special training in Paediatric Maxillofacial Surgery. There, he had the chance to study surgical management of different craniofacial syndromes for children, most commonly the cleft lip/palate.
Aside from being an oral surgeon, Dr. Robertson is also active in research and education. We are amazed that despite being relatively new in his career, he co-authored two research papers on craniofacial orthognathic surgery.
In addition to those responsibilities, Dr. Robertson lends his service to other clinics in Calgary, particularly the Alberta Children’s Hospital and Peter Lougheed Centre.
One patient who had a bicycle accident appreciated how the doctor addressed his trauma and the effects of his concussion by keeping him updated during and after the procedure. He even checked up on him after the operation.
Unlike the other oral surgeons on this list, Dr. Robertson has relatively lesser experience (over four years). That said, patients who do not take it as a big deal would not regret choosing Dr. Robertson for his extensive education and training.
As for the clinic, we found that their parking lot is in the basement of their building, which is somewhat far from the clinic itself. PWD patients may need extra patience and effort.
Also, their operating hours are confusing since it is different per day. We advise clients to double-check before going to the clinic.
5. Dr. Shawn Higashi – Northland Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Pros
- More than a decade of experience
- Specialises in anaesthesia application
- Has a own medical facility
- Serves as an attending surgeon
- Involved in clinical programmes
Cons
- Slow to respond to post-op queries
- Reports on rude behaviour of receptionist
Dr. Shawn Higashi has had more than a decade of experience since he finished his fellowship at the University of Oklahoma.
He also served as trauma and orthognathic surgeon at the Thunder Bay Regional Level Trauma Hospital in Ontario.
Because of Dr. Higashi’s experiences in the US and Canada, he has an oral surgeon certification from both countries.
Aside from being a private oral surgeon at the Northland Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Centre, he runs a medical facility named Surgical & Anaesthesia Facility.
In addition, he is an attending surgeon at five other clinics in Calgary and at the University of Alberta.
He also extends his expertise to local medical programmes such as the Alberta Children’s Hospital Cleft Lip and Palate program.
His clinic PWD parking space just a few steps away from the clinic, which we find convenient.
Dr. Higashi’s patients praised not only his swift procedures but also how he uses his fun side to comfort them. One client recalled that her nine-year-old daughter that had her first wisdom tooth surgery felt no uneasiness during and after the surgery.
However, several patients have stated that although Dr. Higashi is very responsive to questions during the procedure, the clinic is not as consistent in promptly responding to post-operation queries.
Some clients also found the clinic receptionist rude, which doesn’t really help ease their nerves.
We hope that Dr. Higashi addresses these concerns for his patients’ comfort and sake.
