Liberal Party Wins the Federal Elections – Mark Carney Stays on as PM
In a dramatic turnaround, the Liberal Party won the federal elections, and Mark Carney will stay on as Prime Minister of Canada.
Just a couple of months ago, it seemed that the Liberals were headed for defeat. They were losing popularity amid former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s drop in public approval and US President Donald Trump’s looming threats to annex Canada.
The odds were thought to be in favour of Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, who was a frontrunner to become the next Prime Minister. But, in a shocking twist, he lost his seat in Carleton to Liberal Bruce Fanjoy, which he’s held for over two decades.
The National Democratic Party (NDP) also suffered a blow. It lost its official party status, and its leader, Jagmeet Singh, resigned after losing his seat in Burnaby Central.
The Liberals are poised to form a minority government in the House of Commons after missing the threshold of a majority.
In the election victory speech, Carney reiterated that Canada will never be part of America. He said that Trump is trying to break Canadians but that it will ‘never, ever happen.’
He ended his speech by saying, “Together, we will build a Canada worthy of our values. We will build Canada strong, Canada free, Canada forever.”
