What to Do and See in Blachford Lake Lodge

Watch the Northern Lights

Blachford Lake Lodge is one of the most incredible places to witness the Northern Lights. Located far from any light pollution in Canada’s Northwest Territories, it offers you unobstructed views of the aurora.

A quick bush plane flight from Yellowknife brings you to this remote retreat, where the sky puts on a nightly show during the colder months.

What makes this experience unforgettable is how close you feel to the dancing lights. You can step right outside the lodge, wrap yourself in a blanket, and watch as green, pink, and purple streaks ripple across the night sky.

For an even more magical perspective, relax in the outdoor hot tub while the aurora reflects off the frozen lake.

Inside the lodge, you’ll find cozy viewing spaces with massive windows so you never have to miss the action.

Since the place is really known for their unique auroras, let’s go more in-depth about them so you’ll know what to expect when visiting here:

Winter: The Peak of Aurora Season

Winter at Blachford Lake Lodge is prime time for viewing the auroras. The long, dark nights and clear skies provide ideal conditions for catching the lights at their most vibrant. You can step outside the lodge, snuggle into a parka, and watch the green and purple hues dance overhead.

The frozen lake adds another layer of magic as it reflects the colors of the aurora. You can even enjoy the lights from the warmth of the lodge’s hot tub, making it a one-of-a-kind experience. Winter auroras here are all about intensity and immersion.

Spring: Soft Lights and Melting Ice

Spring auroras come with milder temperatures and the beauty of melting ice. As the days grow longer, you’ll still have the chance to catch the lights after sunset, often in softer tones compared to winter’s displays.

This season offers a balance of adventure and relaxation, with activities like snowshoeing in the evening and aurora-watching later at night. It’s a quieter time for visitors, giving you a more personal experience with the Northern Lights.

Summer: Midnight Twilight and Aurora Teases

In summer, the Northern Lights are less frequent due to the long daylight hours, but they can still appear late at night. If you’re a night owl, you might catch faint streaks of green blending with the midnight twilight, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.

This season is perfect if you want to pair aurora hunting with daytime adventures like canoeing or hiking. While summer’s auroras are subtle, the lodge’s setting ensures the experience is still unforgettable.

Fall: Crisp Air and Bold Displays

As darkness returns in the fall, auroras come back with a boldness that rivals winter. The cooler temperatures and clear skies provide excellent conditions for vibrant displays that light up the night.

Fall also means fewer visitors, giving you a more intimate experience with the lights. Imagine sitting by a crackling fire, wrapped in a blanket, as the sky above transforms into a swirling canvas of colors.

Once your day on the ice wraps up, you can head back to the lodge to warm up by the fire or share stories with other guests.

The balance of outdoor adventure and indoor comfort makes it all the more memorable. Ice fishing here feels personal, peaceful, and unlike anything else you’ll try—so we urge you to at least go out there and ice fish at least once!
