The 5 Best Tutoring Services in Edmonton for Study Support that Will Help You Ace Exams!

Qualifications - Tutors with the relevant experience in the subjects they teach can answer any question with facts, not opinions or false statements.

Teaching Approach - A good tutor must know how to adjust their teaching strategies and create a supportive environment because encouraging the learner can greatly contribute to their progress.

Programs - A tutoring service that offers a variety of subjects and instruction modes can accommodate diverse needs.

Availability - Tutoring sessions are after-school sessions. A flexible schedule will be convenient to both the learner and their parents. Online sessions are also a big plus for busy calendars!

Once you become a parent, you’ll understand the need for extra academic help. I’d like to think that I’m smart (I had good grades), but that doesn’t translate to a good teacher when it comes to my child’s math homework (it’s been a hair-pulling journey).

When your kid receives bad grades, it’s saddening and disappointing. But instead of getting angry, it’s important to take a step back and try to understand the situation and why it happened.

If you notice that your child needs additional support, check out the best tutoring services in Edmonton that have helped my kid (and my officemates’ kids). Don’t let your child get overwhelmed by school; instead, offer guidance and academic help!

The full-on support provided by Vteach Learning Centre Corp. is one of the main reasons we trust their service. Aside from being a tutoring service, they double as a test centre for CELPIP, IELTS, and more.

Impressively, their tutors specialise in various subjects, including science and math, rather than focusing on just one or two.

It’s the tailored support for K-12 that completely made a strong impression. They don’t stop at learning—they also offer homework help and test preparation assistance for learners who need extra guidance!

A unique offering is their Cogito Program Support, a high-achieving structured learning environment for Edmonton Public School students. It can be academically challenging, and their learners have seen a positive impact with the added help.

It’s not just about academics here. They make space for creativity by offering classes for artistic ventures and strategic thinking, such as arts and crafts and chess.

We also love how flexible they are by offering one-on-one online, in-person, and at-home tutoring in Edmonton, but group classes are limited to specific grade levels.

Pros

  • Functions as a test centre
  • Tutors in a wide range of subjects
  • Fosters creativity; offers non-academic classes
  • Provides Cogito Program support
  • Flexible class options, including at-home

Cons

  • Group classes aren’t open to all grade levels

Tutors do their best to help out with any issue

“Vteach is a very good place if you want to learn and review your schoolwork. The tutors there are very nice and do their best to help out with any issue. The fact that any ages is allowed is very good if you want to be and learn around the same people. Overall my experience has been great and I can’t wait to keep going there to learn.”

What we admire about A&D Tutoring is that they help kids, teens, and adults. The tutors here are degree holders (some graduated from Canada’s top universities) and have experience tutoring all ages.

Their K-12 tutoring sessions in Edmonton are available in-person and online, which is flexible. Plus, they specialise in various subjects, like math, humanities, and social studies.

Incredibly, they’re also experienced in tutoring adults, even if you’re over 60 years old. They can help you advance your career, or if you need guidance in learning skills in the digital world, like web development or Microsoft Office training.

The flexible teaching approach helps all grade levels and caters to different needs, and most learners have noted the stress-free environment. They take it up a notch by offering both one-on-one and group tutoring sessions.

However, they’re not always flexible, as weekends are by appointment only—a bummer for packed calendars, especially for adult learners. Then again, they have a wide range of academic services, including STEM programs and serving as a test centre.

Pros

  • Tutors are degree holders
  • Offers K-12 and adult tutoring
  • Offers STEM programs
  • Acts as a test centre
  • Online and in-person sessions

Cons

  • Weekends are by appointment only

The environment is very friendly

“A&D Tutoring is a great place to learn English. Since I started school on January I’ve learned so much. I like to read. Here I’ve read the longest books I’ve ever read. Some are best-sellers! The environment is very friendly from the receptionist, to the owner, to the teachers. I would recommend that anyone wanting to learn come here.”

Fundamentals First provides complete academic support, from homework help to test preparation. Another reason they made a strong impression is their student-centred approach through personalised teaching methods that focus on grades and confidence.

They specialise in one-on-one tutoring, and small-group sessions are also available. These are offered in-person and online, providing flexibility for students with demanding schedules.

We were also impressed by the programs, which cover all K-12 subjects, like science and math. They don’t offer non-academic programs, though, but they compensate by providing a fun, engaging approach to tough subjects.

Plus, the learners loved how interesting the tutoring sessions were, and they also saw positive changes in their approach to learning. It doesn’t feel overwhelming, even during after-school hours, since the tutors have flexible schedules.

Slots have limited availability, however. On a good note, they’re in the affordable range when compared to other tutoring centres in Edmonton, so it makes sense.

Pros

  • Covers all K-12 subjects
  • Uses a fun, engaging teaching approach
  • Flexible schedule
  • In-person and online classes
  • Within the reasonable price range

Cons

  • Lacks non-academic programs
  • Limited slots

Very welcoming environment

“Very welcoming environment, and Tanu has been super nice and helpful! She guided me in the right direction and helped me understand key concepts that really improved my work. The sessions are also flexible and engaging, and the practice work gives a great review of new concepts, without feeling overwhelming. I would definitely recommend Fundamentals First for anyone looking for a tutor who is easy to communicate with and is understanding of your different learning styles.”

Able to curate an individualised teaching style

“Since joining Fundamentals First I have noticed a significant confidence boost in my daughter while she does math. She is no longer worried about tests or assignments because Tanu has done an amazing job prepping her. Tanu is truly a gifted tutor who is able to curate an Individualized teaching style and is focused on helping every student reach their academic potential. Her service allows for flexible times with online and in-person options. Fundamentals first has by far been the best tutoring service I have come across and will definitely be registering my son for the fall. Recommending this to all parents who are looking for the best tutors and service available!”

A tutoring service in Edmonton that’s appropriately named is Mathnasium, a learning centre that focuses on math. It’s a different kind of tutoring, where each student receives a learning plan they can study at their own pace—all without homework.

What’s notable is how the whole teaching approach primarily addresses areas of weakness to enhance their understanding of math. Learners receive focused support, which is great, but that also means there are limited programs.

Then again, the tutors guide learners of all grade levels, from early childhood to high school, so that includes more complex math, like calculus.

In addition, they’re equipped to tutor advanced learners and those who need extra guidance through targeted instruction. It’s convenient that tutors also assist students with their math homework by using the dedicated time in each session.

Unfortunately, the schedule isn’t so flexible because instructional days are only four times a week. Nonetheless, tutoring sessions are available in-person, online, and hybrid, and they have other centres in Edmonton to pick whichever is closest.

Pros

  • Self-paced learning; no homework
  • Tutors for all grade levels
  • Accepts struggling and advanced learners
  • Available for hybrid sessions
  • Several locations in Edmonton

Cons

  • Lacks flexibility in schedule
  • Limited programs

Committed to making math fun

“We are very happy with the tutoring my daughter receives. She really dislikes math but really enjoys going to mathnasium and completing their program. We really appreciate their commitment to making math fun and their reward system really encourages her engagement.”

Knowledgeable, patient, and great at explaining math concepts

“My son has been attending Mathnasium for several months now, and I couldn’t be more pleased with his progress! The instructors are knowledgeable, patient, and great at explaining mathematical concepts in a way that my son can understand. The customized learning plan has helped him build a strong foundation in math and gain confidence in his abilities. The center provides a supportive and engaging environment where he feels comfortable asking questions and working through challenging problems. I would highly recommend Mathnasium to any parent looking to enhance their child’s math skills and foster a love for learning.”

Kumon only offers two subjects: math and reading. And even though that’s not a lot of programs, they still cover more complex ones, like calculus and statistics.

They’re open for kids from preschool to high school, who receive individualised learning plans to fill knowledge gaps. This works, as the parents we surveyed noticed a significant improvement in their kids, like quick mastery of math and reading concepts.

The way it works is the learner answers worksheets, which give them the flexibility to learn at their own pace. It’s quick—done twice a week with the tutor—and takes only 30 minutes, and some worksheets are answered at home for the rest of the week.

It’s pretty flexible since there’s no set time the learner needs to finish the worksheets, but there’s the absence of one-on-one tutoring.

The kids can go to the learning centre or do it online, though. This option builds critical thinking skills as kids learn to solve problems independently—still a win in learning!

Pros

  • Covers complex math and reading topics
  • Individualised learning plans
  • Available in-person and online
  • Worksheets can take a short time to finish
  • Builds critical thinking skills

Cons

  • Limited subjects
  • No one-on-one tutoring

We have seen so much growth in math and English

“Kumon has been a wonderful experience for our child. We have seen so much growth in both math and English, along with discipline and confidence in independent learning. Instructor Dwight and all the educators have been incredibly supportive, patient, and encouraging throughout the journey. They truly care about the students and their progress. We are very grateful for their guidance and highly recommend Kumon to any parent looking for strong academic support.”

Improved his math and reading immensely

“My grandson Jax has attended Kumon in Jackson Heights the past two years. He is enrolled in public school French omission program. He was struggling with math and reading. Kumon has improved his math and reading immensely. He is excelling in school now because of Kumon instruction. Dwight is such a friendly and professional person. The kids really adore him. He has a genuine interest in the kids learning. I highly recommend the Jackson Height Kumon location. You will be pleased with the results. A great investment in your child’s future. Grampa Ed”
