The flexible teaching approach helps all grade levels and caters to different needs, and most learners have noted the stress-free environment. They take it up a notch by offering both one-on-one and group tutoring sessions.

However, they’re not always flexible, as weekends are by appointment only—a bummer for packed calendars, especially for adult learners. Then again, they have a wide range of academic services, including STEM programs and serving as a test centre.

They specialise in one-on-one tutoring, and small-group sessions are also available. These are offered in-person and online, providing flexibility for students with demanding schedules.

We were also impressed by the programs, which cover all K-12 subjects, like science and math. They don’t offer non-academic programs, though, but they compensate by providing a fun, engaging approach to tough subjects.

Plus, the learners loved how interesting the tutoring sessions were, and they also saw positive changes in their approach to learning. It doesn’t feel overwhelming, even during after-school hours, since the tutors have flexible schedules.

Slots have limited availability, however. On a good note, they’re in the affordable range when compared to other tutoring centres in Edmonton, so it makes sense.

A tutoring service in Edmonton that’s appropriately named is Mathnasium, a learning centre that focuses on math. It’s a different kind of tutoring, where each student receives a learning plan they can study at their own pace—all without homework.

What’s notable is how the whole teaching approach primarily addresses areas of weakness to enhance their understanding of math. Learners receive focused support, which is great, but that also means there are limited programs. 

Then again, the tutors guide learners of all grade levels, from early childhood to high school, so that includes more complex math, like calculus.

In addition, they’re equipped to tutor advanced learners and those who need extra guidance through targeted instruction. It’s convenient that tutors also assist students with their math homework by using the dedicated time in each session.

Unfortunately, the schedule isn’t so flexible because instructional days are only four times a week. Nonetheless, tutoring sessions are available in-person, online, and hybrid, and they have other centres in Edmonton to pick whichever is closest.

Kumon only offers two subjects: math and reading. And even though that’s not a lot of programs, they still cover more complex ones, like calculus and statistics.

They’re open for kids from preschool to high school, who receive individualised learning plans to fill knowledge gaps. This works, as the parents we surveyed noticed a significant improvement in their kids, like quick mastery of math and reading concepts.

The way it works is the learner answers worksheets, which give them the flexibility to learn at their own pace. It’s quick—done twice a week with the tutor—and takes only 30 minutes, and some worksheets are answered at home for the rest of the week.

It’s pretty flexible since there’s no set time the learner needs to finish the worksheets, but there’s the absence of one-on-one tutoring. 

The kids can go to the learning centre or do it online, though. This option builds critical thinking skills as kids learn to solve problems independently—still a win in learning!
