5 Steakhouses in Calgary That Prove Alberta Is Home to The Best Beef

  • Menu Variety - First, we checked their menu to see if they offered enough variety with their meat and side dishes.
  • Food: Of course, we also wanted to include restaurants that offered delicious food.
  • Restaurant - We also considered the place itself if they were well-maintained and provided a great ambience.
  • Accessibility - Next, we considered how accessible their location and operation hours were.
  • Customer service - Also, we observed their staff members to see if they offered speedy and friendly customer service.
  • Affordability - Lastly, we checked their prices to see how budget-friendly they were.

Since Calgary is in Canada’s number one beef province, Alberta, you’ll most likely be recommended by locals to try their quality steaks.

Honestly, I’d do the same, as it would be a shame to miss out on these premium cuts of beef while you’re here. I’d recommend them enough that even if you only have one day to spend in Calgary, we’d still advise you to find a way to dine in one of the city’s best steakhouses.

Now, I may not have the certifications to prove it, but I’ve had my fair share of steaks in the city to the point where I can differentiate the good ones from the bad—and I’m here to share the former! Check out our handpicked steakhouses in Calgary that you MUST visit during your trip:

Ruth’s Chris Steak House has been on our radar for a while so we were ecstatic when we were making this list. Safe to say, they’ve exceeded our expectations in just about every aspect with regard to their offerings.

For starters, we were impressed with the variety of their menu—even with their selection of cuts alone! They offer anything from New York strips to fillet mignons, porterhouses, ribeyes and everything in between.

The quality of meat is no joke as well, as they’re either corn-fed, USDA prime or aged. We haven’t tried all of them yet but we were super satisfied with the marbling and overall flavour of their tomahawk ribeye.

We also appreciate how they offer seafood for those looking to cut back on meat but still want to enjoy grilled and savoury dishes. A perfect example of this is their sizzling crab cakes, which are massive and flavoured to perfection thanks to the sizzling lemon butter they come with.

The main downside here is the above average prices. However, we could argue that with the quality of their beef and the overall classy ambience of the restaurant, it’s money well spent.

Pros

  • Classy and well-maintained interior
  • Amazing selection of meat cuts
  • Offers seafood options

Cons

  • Above average rates

Absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection

“Absolutely outstanding food. We started with the Caesar salad. The dressing was creamy and full of garlic, but not too much, just right.

For the mains, we had onion rings, mashed potatoes and broccoli au gratin. All amazing. Now the steak (cowboy ribeye) was absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection and seasoned perfectly.

Finished off with the new dessert, which was super good. Service was outstanding. Would definitely come back here again!”

    Service was impeccable!

“My Grandson Graduated this week, and all he wanted to do was have a nice dinner with the family!

My Son and daughter-in-law decided to bring all the family (8) to Ruth’s Chris Steak house. I have never been to a place like this! From the time we walked in to the time we left, was a wonderful experience.

Of course, I was worried about the cost but my Son told me not to look at the price, and get what I wanted. So I did. My steak was perfect, the sides were delicious, and the desserts were to die for!

The service was impeccable! Plus the way the food was brought out, and the way we were left to enjoy our meal, was pure skill!

The ambience was just so nice, and everyone was so friendly. Yes, it is very expensive however if you want something very special, please do this for yourselves! You deserve it once in a while.

Parking: We were at 5 in the parkade. We had lots of spaces to choose from, plus we were very, very close to the restaurant!”

When it comes to variety, Vintage Chophouse and Tavern may take the crown. One of the reasons we say this is because of the fantastic selection of sauces they offer to serve alongside their steaks like black truffle butter, bone marrow butter, brandy shallot peppercorn and more.

Among these sauces, however, our favourite one is the blue cheese butter because the creaminess of the butter perfectly blends with the slightly sharp flavour of the cheese. If you want something more traditional, however, their classic bearnaise will more than suffice.

They also offer a solid selection of wines to give that acidic kick that’s perfect to pair with their huge slabs of meat. Then to top it all off, we like to order one of their desserts like their no-bake cheesecake.

We also love how professional their staff members are. Each time we’ve visited this place, we were always greeted with smiles and speedy service.

The only problem we’ve noticed with Vintage Chophouse and Tavern is its inconsistent food quality. Personally, we’ve never encountered getting a wrongly-cooked steak but a variety of their past customers we spoke miss voiced their dismay over their under/overcooked cuts.

    Pros

    • Offers a fine selection of wines and desserts
    • Wide variety of steak cuts and sauces
    • Friendly and helpful staff members
    • Classy ambience

    Cons

    • Inconsistent quality of food
    • Pricey

Went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect

“Our server Fred was an absolute Gem. From the moment we sat down, he took good care of us and was extremely knowledgeable about the steak cuts and wine selections.

He went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect.

The restaurant itself is high class and the food was outstanding. The steak was cooked to perfection and the dessert was truly amazing. The appetizers were good too! We’ll definitely be back, and we’ll even ask for Fred again!”

      Blown away by the food!

“We have been here on two separate occasions and each time we are blown away by the food!! We enjoyed their appetizers pork belly and scallops – it was sooooo good!

The steak is great and we absolutely love their fries! The best in our opinion.

Our servers on each visit were amazing, the service was so good, never heard of asking for a refill of my water and we never felt like we had to wait for our server to ask for anything.

To get there it was easy access and easy to find parking.

Went on a Friday the last time which was awesome because there was a live band playing.

My husband definitely enjoyed the food but the service and the atmosphere is the best.

Our experience at Hy’s Steakhouse immediately stood out because of their tableside service. We remember how their chefs masterfully prepared our Steak Diane right in front of our eyes, which was a spectacle.

One thing we love about Hy’s Steakhouse is they offer a solid selection of house classics as opposed to just featuring different cuts of meat. For instance, they offer a great version of Beef Wellington akin to those you’ll find in cooking shows like Masterchef and Hell’s Kitchen.

We were also amazed by the flavour of their steak au poivre mainly because of the restaurant’s brandy green peppercorn sauce. It also helps that the New York strip featured in this dish features amazing marbling and is cooked to perfection.

As for its downsides, the main one we’ve been hearing from their previous customers is the lacklustre side dishes. We can understand this to an extent, as they are indeed a bit of a hit or a miss, but they aren’t too drastic to the point where the meal will be ruined.

      Pros

      • Offers great tableside service
      • Features a wide variety of house classics and prime steaks
      • Elegant interior

      Cons

      • Pricey
      • Some side dishes are subpar

Caesar’s Steak House & Lounge is what we’d typically imagine when we think of steakhouses, with the place’s classy interior decor and dim lights. It also helps that they feature one of the most varied menus in the area!

For starters, they offer a wide array of sides from salads to pasta, smoked salmon, soup and more. Of course, the main event remains to be their premium beef cuts like the New York strip, ribeye, filet mignon, etc.

We also appreciate how they offer a myriad of sauces to go along with their steaks. You can’t go wrong with any of them but we personally love green peppercorn sauce, as it adds more heat to our steaks.

Our favourite thing about this place is its wide array of house specialities like their Steak Neptune. We also love to order their lobster tail to give our order a bit more variety as opposed to having pure meat.

However, we did hear some negative reviews about their customer service from the previous customers whom we interviewed. Some were disappointed with the serving time while others weren’t pleased with how their steak was cooked.

        Pros

        • Widely varied menu
        • Offers house specialties on top of steak cuts
        • In-depth wine menu

        Cons

        • Customer service could be improved

The best dining experience I’ve ever had in Calgary!

“Our family went here for dinner while we were visiting Calgary as a friend had recommended it. We were celebrating a 60th birthday which they made incredibly special.

They provided champagne for a birthday toast and an apple pie with a “happy birthday” message written on a wooden board.

Our sever Carmen was absolutely phenomenal, as is their bar manager! The food was excellent. Thanks to all the staff for a memorable evening!”

“Phenomenal!!! This is a full-blown dining EXPERIENCE! Lawson was a fantastic server, very friendly, funny, attentive and polite. The food was decadent and perfectly prepared.

The atmosphere was a flashback to a more luxurious and elegant place in time. Love this place, and will definitely be back.”

Saltlik is a fine establishment that immediately caught our attention because of its elegant interior decor. We had the same reaction to their food the first time we ate here because their serving sizes were massive and the flavours were great.

For starters, they offer a wide variety of salads that are great for sharing like their Vinnie’s Broccoli signature. What’s better is that they offer the option to add ingredients like salmon, steak, and creamy burrata.

Speaking of steak, their selection here is wild, ranging from Angus beef sirloins to filet mignons and more. However, nothing compares to their bone-in ribeye, which is as meaty as it can get.

As much as we love their steaks and mains, however, their side dishes can be a bit inconsistent. Furthermore, their prices are a bit too expensive, so we only save this place for special occasions but if you have the budget, this is a solid option for steak cravings.

          Pros

          • Great selection of premium quality steaks
          • Offers various mains
          • In-depth sides menu
          • Offers various desserts
          • Great customer service

          Cons

          • Expensive
          • Side dishes may be a hit or a miss
