Pros
- Has a patented music method
- Provides live performances
- Offers online and in-person lessons
- Provides tour experience opportunity
Cons
- Higher prices
Located in Croydon Avenue, School of Rock is a highly accessible music school. There are now over 300 locations worldwide—impressive, right?
But what’s outstanding is their School of Rock Method, which they have a patent for! They don’t stick to traditional music education, which we believe is helpful nowadays.
And given their name, lessons with them start by teaching guitar students famous rock songs.
We admire their approach of having students perform together rather than just sticking to one-on-one lessons. It helps them learn how to perform in a band, which we feel is important in music.
Furthermore, we appreciate that they teach kids (as young as three) and adults! For us, there’s no age cap when you want to learn how to play a guitar!
It’s also worth noting that School of Rock offers various music programs catering to different individuals. They even have a program that allows students to have a touring experience in the US!
We think it also helps that they have a well-equipped facility. There are plenty of rooms for their many students to play their guitars!
Their availability is also impressive. We like that they’re open six days a week, offering in-person and online music classes!
School of Rock impressed us overall. It’s just that their prices are pretty expensive, especially compared to other music schools that offer guitar lessons in Winnipeg.
Finally, we think it would also benefit potential students if School of Rock included their rates on their website. Considering the many programs they offer, we feel parents (and interested grown-ups) will be able to work out their budgets if the information is accessible.

Pros
- Open daily
- Reasonably priced
- Offers 6-week trials
- Has a live performance program
Cons
- No summer classes available
- No online classes
We admire The Music Cellar’s humble beginnings, which started in the mid-80s. Vaughn & Collette Smith purchased them in 2018, now serving Winnipeg’s surrounding areas.
From what we’ve seen, we think their highly qualified instructors should be highlighted. Many of their teachers even graduated with music degrees!
Also, we appreciate their well-maintained rooms. There’s a tonne of space for group guitar sessions!
One of the things we like is their availability because they’re open for guitar lessons every day—mainly in pop and rock music genres! It’s beneficial for students with school or work on weekdays.
The downside is they are currently not offering summer classes, as they only hold lessons from September to June.
Looking on the bright side, we appreciate their reasonable pricing. The Music Cellar charges $82 per month or $820 per year for individual lessons, way lower than other music schools in Winnipeg.
Plus, they offer 6-week trials for students who don’t want to commit yet. However, you’d better bring your guitar because they have a separate fee for that—instruments are also subject to availability.
The good thing is they have a ROCK U. program, which allows eligible students to perform live in a band. In our opinion, live performances are essential for the student’s experience and confidence!
Although we were saddened that The Music Cellar doesn’t offer online guitar lessons, as they provide them only for weather or health emergencies. On the bright side, that’s quite helpful during Winnipeg’s cold winters!

Pros
- Has two locations
- Offers in-person, online, and hybrid classes
- Provides low-pressure recitals
- Competitively-priced
Cons
- Only open 3 days a week
- No group lessons available
River Heights School of Music’s location is quite convenient. They are in the Tuxedo Park Shopping Centre, giving parents plenty to do while waiting for their kids.
Additionally, they have another location at Centennial Street. This one is a home-based business, providing a quiet one-on-one lesson—you’ll just hear your own music and no one else!
Besides in-person guitar lessons, they provide online or a combination of both! We find that convenient since it allows for scheduling flexibility.
However, since they focus on private lessons, it also means they don’t offer group lessons. That’s a bit of a downside for students hoping to play in a band.
Another drawback, sadly, is they are only available for guitar lessons three days a week. On the upside, they are open Fridays to Sundays—weekend availability is a plus.
It’s worth mentioning that they give students the choice to join their recital every June. What we like about this is it’s a low-pressure event.
Moreover, we find that helpful for beginners and nervous students. Students can join at the last minute or drop out if they don’t want to perform anymore—entirely on your terms!
Another worth highlighting is their highly experienced music teachers. All of them hold music degrees and boast ample performance experience!
River Heights School of Music offers many programs catered for both kids and adults! They have singing and recording lessons, which go hand-in-hand with guitars!
Plus, they offer acoustic and electric guitar lessons! We admire them for exposing their students to a variety of music genres, from classical to jazz to rock!
Lastly, we find their rates within the competitive range. They charge $33.50 for a 30-minute lesson and $67 for 60 minutes—that’s less than a hundred!

Pros
- Has two locations in Winnipeg
- Offers in-person, in-studio, and online lessons
- Provides customized lessons
- Has a Music Scholarship Fund
Cons
- Pricey online guitar lessons
One of the things we like most about Groove Academy is their availability. It gives the students enough flexibility to arrange their schedules.
Moreover, they are open until nighttime—six days a week! In addition to that, they have two locations in Winnipeg and another two in Calgary.
We also want to mention they provide in-studio, in-home, and online lessons! No worries if you have a busy schedule!
Groove Academy’s rates are pricey. A 15-minute lesson for ages three to four is $80, while a 1-hour class is $195.
Their online lessons are pretty high compared to other music schools, too. It’s because they offer the same rates for both online and in-studio.
The upside is their range of services is quite impressive. Besides guitar lessons, they provide voice and music theory in various genres, from classical to current popular music!
Another aspect we really like is their customized lessons, catering to different individuals. They offer 30-minute, 45-minute, and 1-hour guitar classes to kids and adults, from beginners to advanced players.
Even better, Groove Academy teachers utilize audio, visual, and kinesthetic aids. Due to this, their students won’t feel bored or overwhelmed, which we think is essential.
Part of their approach is providing customized methods for each student. We commend the care and flexibility they provide for different needs.
A favourite of ours is their students get live guitar performance opportunities. Students can perform locally or internationally, which is an incredible opportunity!
Finally, we’d like to highlight that one lucky student can secure the Music Scholarship Fund at Groove Academy annually. We applaud them for offering this opportunity since not all music schools do this!

Pros
- Has two locations
- Offers in-person and online lessons
- Has competitive rates
Cons
- Portage location is by appointment only
With its two offices, Quest Music Academy makes guitar lessons available for Winnipeggers! Their locations are on Osborne Street and Portage Avenue.
However, their Portage location is strictly on an appointment basis. We find their Osborne Street branch more accessible with the extended hours.
On the plus side, they conduct guitar lessons six days a week. That’s really helpful since music students have school or work on weekdays.
What’s more, they offer both in-person and online sessions. It’s flexible for students, especially busy ones—or when Winnipeg weather isn’t cooperating!
As for their services, they offer music theory, voice, and home recording. You can enroll in those, too, since they’re pretty much related to guitar lessons!
Their ROCKsCOOL program is worth noting as it allows students to rock out their guitars in a band. It’s also useful because of the experience and skills you can get before performing live.
Additionally, we love how Quest Music Academy has highly experienced music teachers. They’re experts in various genres, such as pop, blues, rock, metal, and alternative!
Price-wise, they offer competitive rates. It honestly surprised us because 30-minute individual lessons start at $25, while an hour is $50.
Finally, can we just appreciate their studio? The rooms are spacious and well-maintained—great for jamming sessions!
