5 Clinics with the Best Orthopaedic Specialists in Calgary for Bones, Joints, and Mobility

Specialization – We focused on orthopaedists with proven expertise in orthopedic care, such as sports injuries, chronic pain, arthritis, joint replacement, spinal conditions, fractures, or other bone, joint, or ligament issues.

Treatment approach – We considered how well each orthopaedic specialist develops personalized care plans that reflect a patient’s specific condition, activity level, and long-term mobility goals.

Availability and scheduling – We prioritized orthopedists who offer reasonable wait times, flexible appointment options, and scheduling.

Patient care – We looked for professionals who communicate clearly, show empathy, and have consistent follow-up care to support recovery.

Price – We chose clinics that are upfront about any additional fees or if there’s anything not covered by insurance.

I was out on a golf course with my parents the other day, when my dad’s swing was interrupted by something far less exciting—a sharp knee pain he couldn’t ignore.

Add my mom’s persistent reminders to the mix, and by the end of the week, we had him booked in to get his knees checked and lined up for a procedure. Moral of the story: those little aches, cracks, and complaints are rarely “just nothing.”

That’s why my team and I reviewed the best orthopaedic specialists in Calgary to help you or your loved ones tackle bone, joint, or ligament issues before they sideline everyday life. Keep reading to find out which option might be the right fit for you.

What’s neat about Gateway Surgery is that they can handle many orthopaedic procedures, including hip, knee, spine, elbow, wrist, and foot/ankle injuries, from joint replacements to arthroscopies.

That said, we appreciate how they guide and assist you through pre-op workups, personalized surgical planning, and more, reducing the burden on patients. To give you an idea, they even assist with booking, documentation, and travel arrangements if surgery is in another city.

Their post-op follow-up is also a thoughtful touch. They continue to support with wound checks and rehabilitation guidance for better recovery and help catch issues early.

Now, you can meet specialists in person or virtually. Just note that they’re closed on weekends.

On the bright side, you can book a consultation within 1-2 weeks through their concierge scheduling team, and can start waiting for a private surgery in the next 4-15 weeks—far quicker than many public waitlists.

Pros

  • Typically books within 1-2 weeks
  • Shorter surgery wait times
  • Comprehensive orthopaedic procedures
  • Full circle of care
  • Great post-op follow-up

Cons

  • Closed on weekends

Speedy rehab

“Dr Woodmass performed a major rotator cuff repair on my left shoulder 3 months ago. I am having a speedy rehab and experienced minimal discomfort.”

Right off the bat, Access Orthopaedics really does open the doors for orthopaedic treatments. They have a team of surgeons, neurosurgeons, rehabilitation specialists, sport medicine physicians, and experienced physiotherapists under one roof.

On top of that, they have imaging available on-site, which streamlines the diagnostic process so you don’t have to go elsewhere for X-rays or scans.

Another thing we love is that they can see patients urgently for non-surgical fractures and soft-tissue injuries and even provide cast removal or application on-site.

Here’s the thing, though: if you’re planning to come in as a WCB patient, they won’t accept you. So, if you’re injured at work, you may need alternate care pathways.

Other than that, this clinic is a solid pick. They even offer pain relief options like injections delivered by physiatry specialists in an interventional suite; a win for those struggling with ongoing pain that holds back healing or activity.

Pros

  • Multidisciplinary care team
  • Has on-site diagnostic imaging
  • Acute injury and fracture clinic
  • Offers pain relief options

Cons

  • Closed on weekends
  • Doesn’t accept WCB patients

Follow-up care was amazing

“Recently had my foot surgery done by Dr. Denise Mackey and cannot say enough about how smooth everything went and how wonderful Dr. Mackey is! Everything was explained in detail and followup care was amazing! Big shout out to Karen at front desk for her kindness and attention to detail!”

Clean environment

“Clean environment. Staff are friendly, very accommodating and will surely recommend to my friends. Thank you most especially to Dr Duce and his assistant Rose.”

True to its name, The Knee Clinic specializes in knee injuries and pain rather than general orthopaedics.

The downside? You won’t find comprehensive non-knee treatments here. The good news is that since they primarily focus on one thing, the clinicians have a deeper and nuanced experience in both simple and complex cases.

There are even custom knee braces and on-site bracket selection, which is a plus in our books. The tailored bracing they provide can reduce pain and improve function more effectively than generic options.

We found that they offer physiotherapy, chiropractic services, acupuncture, massage therapy and more, too, to go alongside your procedure for speedy recovery.

It’s also worth noting that you won’t have to wait months for assessment and treatment—they aim to take you in within days or weeks.

Quick heads-up: some patients said that the fees can be pretty pricey, so it’s better to discuss this thoroughly before committing. Still, we can’t deny that their knee expertise is worth the investment.

Pros

  • Reliable knee treatment
  • Fast access
  • Offers multidisciplinary treatments
  • Offers custom knee bracing

Cons

  • Some reports of pricey fees
  • Doesn’t focus on non-knee-related care

Solutions that worked

“Came to the clinic for knee pain from many yrs of abuse. Dr. Karmali. He provided great suggestions and solutions that worked.”

Life has changed completely

One of the main standouts with Alberta Hip and Knee Clinic is that they have a large team, with around 23 orthopedic surgeons and MSK specialists. Having many experienced experts definitely increases the chances of matching your specific problem with a suitable surgeon.

And we’re glad that they’re able to provide you with coordinated care thanks to their team of nurse case managers, rehab staff, and even admin support.

Bonus perk: patients are offered healthy living classes and printed guides on hip and knee replacements, pain management, and mobility tools before surgery. It’s essentially a way for you to boost your confidence and peace of mind.

On the flipside, you’ll have to prepare yourself for longer wait times, too. You see, among other things, they don’t provide private pay options, so you’ll have to go through the public system process.

Nonetheless, once it’s your turn, we do believe their process is efficient, like their structured post-op follow-ups.

Pros

  • Has a large specialist team
  • Provides coordinated care
  • Reliable non-surgical care options
  • Structured follow-ups

Cons

  • Doesn’t provide private pay options
  • Longer wait times

Very knowledgeable and friendly

“Dr. Richard Ng and his team are amazing! They are very knowledgeable and friendly and made me feel at ease. The entire staff at the Alberta Hip and Knee Clinic are wonderful.”

Incredibly well-organized

“This is the second surgery I’ve had through Alberta Hip and Knee (and hopefully, the last!) Everyone from the front-desk staff to my surgeon (Dr. Meldrum) has been so kind and professional, and the Clinic is incredibly well organized. If you need support post-surgery, they are right there for you.”

If speed is a non-negotiable for you, then Acumen Clinic Calgary is a strong choice for expedited orthopaedic consultations and care. They provide private, no-referral-needed consultations with specialists, which means you can be scheduled far faster than public healthcare wait lists.

We also have to highlight that you can get both surgical and non-surgical treatments, like total joint replacements, arthroscopic procedures, PRP injections, and athletic therapy. This also means you won’t have to hop to different providers for every phase of care.

Speaking of athletes, the clinic has on-site reconditioning and strength-training services. Plus, they have individualized programs focusing on biomechanics, injury prevention, and physical performance, which can benefit athletes returning to activity.

The catch? Well, since they focus on private care and procedures, expect to see higher and pricier out-of-pocket services. Regardless, this clinic is a dependable pick for speedy and urgent orthopaedic care.

Pros

  • Expedited consultation and care
  • No-referral needed
  • Comprehensive surgical and non-surgical options
  • Has on-site therapy and reconditioning
  • Great for sports injuries

Cons

  • Pricier than others
  • Doesn’t focus on public care system
