How We Picked

Credentials – We chose qualified arborists with proper certifications and insurance to ensure the safety of clients, property, and workers.
Equipment – Those with complete and up-to-date equipment were prioritised in our list.
Range of Services – We looked into the wide array of services offered for more options.
Pricing – A simple tree removal can be costly due to several factors, so we picked those with competitive prices and free estimates.

Pros

  • COR certified
  • Offers consultation services
  • Complete equipment

Cons

  •  Early closing time
  • No emergency services
  • More limited range of services

Owners Joey and Lisa Sullivan started Sullivan Tree Service in 2008. They are certified by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), which makes them qualified tree care professionals.

We’re also impressed to know they are qualified tree risk assessors by the ISA. This gives them the knowledge to provide clients helpful information on the risks and benefits of having a tree removed.

We’re happy they have a Certificate of Recognition (COR) from the Alberta Construction Safety Association, which reflects their knowledge and expertise on safety.

They offer residential removal of trees, stumps, and shrubs. They also offer pruning services that protect properties and passersby from damage.

Aside from that, they install support systems for trees with defective roots or weak limbs. In order to prevent potential hazards, this is an essential service.

What we really like about Sullivan Tree Service is their consultation services with Lisa Sullivan. She’s a registered consulting arborist, so we’re confident in her ability to provide homeowners accurate insights.

We think the consultation will highly benefit those who want to sell their property. Sullivan will diagnose tree disease and damage, as well as conduct tree appraisals.

You see, damaged trees can decrease your property’s value. Tree appraisers are responsible for assigning monetary value and explaining and defending their results.

Regarding equipment, we’re happy to say they have a complete set. This includes a Ford bucket truck to elevate workers to inaccessible areas and chippers for tree and shrub removal.

Overall, we love their qualifications. We’re only a little disappointed in their limited range of services.

Pros

  • Over 25 years of experience
  • Certified and insured
  • Golf course maintenance service

Cons

  •  Closed on weekends
  • No pest and disease control
  • No emergency services

Aerial Tree Services Ltd has been servicing residential and commercial areas in Calgary for over 25 years.

Their arborists are certified by the ISA. Aside from that, they are affiliated with the Workers Compensation Board – Alberta (WCB) and the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA).

We’re glad to know that they are fully insured with general liability and have workers’ compensation. Clients are assured of protection from bodily injury and property damage.

Their services include tree removal, pruning, and shaping. They also do tree cabling and bracing to strengthen those with weak branches.

One thing that sets them apart is that they provide maintenance of golf courses, too. For this service, they offer tree beautification and management to ensure its appeal to golfers.

They have top-notch equipment that can tackle farm and acreage pruning. We’re impressed because this is labour-intensive work (given the size of the property) that requires a lot of patience and know-how.

A few past clients mentioned that they quoted higher rates than similar services. Even so, it seems their workmanship is worth the investment.

Past clients praised their thoroughness, too. They reportedly do a great job tidying up, ensuring the place was neat before leaving the property.

All in all, we like their services and professionalism. When looking for tree maintenance for larger properties, they can be a good option to look into.

Pros

  • Emergency tree service
  • Tree diagnosis and treatment plan
  • Tree installation

Cons

  • No commercial services
  • Some reports on needing to improve communication

Arborist Jeremy Nicol founded Open Canopy Tree in 2015. He also worked in forestry, which taught him to conserve trees sustainably.

When looking for one of the best arborists, being licenced and insured are important to ensure the protection of workers, clients, and the property.

That said, Open Canopy Tree is ISA certified and fully insured. Customers can feel confident that they maintain a safe working environment for their workers.

They offer several residential services, including storm response tree removal. During those unpredictable weather changes, it’s good to know that they are available in case of emergencies.

What we really like about their service is their tree diagnosis. Trees are susceptible to pests and diseases when they aren’t properly cared for.

Experts will come to assess and diagnose the damaged tree. After that, they will provide a treatment plan to cure the disease.

Another service we like about them is tree installation. To help beautify the property, they can assess and install a tree based on your land.

Now, regarding quotes, they provide a digital document with a detailed breakdown of costs. We like that they went paperless – the more sustainable route that’s in line with their services.

Everything seems great except for a few minor complaints on quotation discrepancies, which we think could’ve easily been prevented. Some clients mentioned that they were given a different quote than the original one.

Even so, given their vast expertise on trees, we still think they’re worth giving a shot.

Pros

  • Open daily
  • Guaranteed price

Cons

  • Limited services
  • Small team

Founded in 2016, Six Tree is a small business run by two arborists, Josselin and Craig. Josselin, in particular, is ISA certified and has over 20 years of experience.

They are accredited by Better Business Bureau (BBB) and fully comply with WorkSafeBC (WBC) to ensure workplace safety, which speaks well of their work standards.

Although, compared to other services on our list, Six Tree has a very small team. They currently have very few arborists.

What we like about them is their free on-site quote. Clients get a guaranteed price instead of estimates, which means no additional charges during or after a job.

We think it’s a disadvantage that they only offer three services, though. When compared to similar companies, this is very limited.

We do want to highlight their stump grinding service, which we think is incredibly useful as a preventive action. When stumps are left alone, they can house pests that can stay and multiply.

We’ve also spoken with several clients who praised their work and reasonable prices. They were regarded as friendly, professional, and on time.

Just note that when it comes to equipment, they don’t have large bucket trucks compared to others on our list. This is possibly due to their limited number of services.

For a small team, we’re impressed with their quick response and expertise. If you’re in need of a simple tree removal, we think you can check out Six Tree.

Pros

  • Offers tree diagnosis
  • Offers fertilisation and conditioning
  • Free firewood and mulch

Cons

  • Small fee for in-depth consultation
  • Only services residential properties

Maximum Tree Care has been around since 2004 and certified by the ISA. They offer free estimates but charge a fee for more detailed consultations.

We’re pretty happy with the number of services they offer. Although, they only do residential properties.

One of their services that we like is consultation and diagnosis. They provide information regarding proper tree treatment and care to prevent future disease.

We love their tree fertilisation and conditioning service. This is essential in avoiding deterioration so the tree can grow more leaves and roots.

Additionally, we’re glad to know that they only use top-notch equipment. They also use a bucket truck for those hard-to-reach areas.

We really appreciate their free drop-off of firewood and mulch. We think this is a generous gesture for potential customers who need these for soil fertility.

We love that they keep their company sustainable, too. They encourage clients to e-mail their tree photos instead of driving over themselves to reduce consuming large amounts of fuel.

Clients can upload these photos through a form on their website or via e-mail. After that, you can be given a quote.

Several clients praised the quality of their work. They mentioned that the property is thoroughly cleaned after pruning and removal, which shows how meticulous they are.

Most clients we talked to were also happy with their punctuality and quick response. The staff at Maximum Tree Care are reportedly always on time and efficient with tree removal and pruning.

Overall, we think that their responsiveness and efficiency make them an excellent choice.
