Pros

  • Offers phone, virtual, and in-person sessions
  • Has affordable pricing

Cons

  • No male counsellors available
  • Limited availability for Saturday sessions

West Kildonan Wellness Counselling Services is located at Red Boulevard West. They cater to couples, individuals, teens, and pre-teens—a vast clientele!

Conveniently, they offer in-person, phone, and virtual counselling sessions. We find it helpful as it gives clients options, especially if they’re busy.

We also like their vast areas of expertise. Besides marriage and relationship problems, they also work with clients undergoing depression, trauma, and addiction.

Their counsellors are also impressive, each with their own set of skills. Some have even trained in psychotherapy and various counselling approaches.

But they currently don’t have a male marriage counsellor available. In our opinion, this limits their availability since some clients may prefer a male counsellor.

Speaking of availability, only selected marriage counsellors are available for Saturday sessions. For us, that’s another drawback since their small team cannot accommodate more clients.

Looking on the bright side, their pricing is quite affordable! Frankly, it was unexpected, as they offer significantly lower rates compared to other counselling services in Winnipeg.

Moreover, their marriage counselling services start at $100 plus GST. That’s way below the usual prices we’ve seen.

The last thing we like about West Kildonan Wellness Counselling Services is their welcoming atmosphere. We believe the ambience helps clients feel comfortable.

Pros

  • Accepts evening or weekend sessions
  • Has in-person and virtual counselling
  • Offers sliding scale fees

Cons

  • Limited number of marriage counsellors
  • No easy booking system

Located at Carlton Street, Birch Wellness Center has vast expertise areas. The positive aspect is that they can cater to many clients seeking counselling.

What we find impressive is their large team. They have highly qualified counsellors that use various therapy approaches to meet client needs.

Moreover, they have male and female counsellors available. The way we see it, clients can find their preferred match.

However, the downside is only a few counsellors specialize in marriage counselling. That, unfortunately, limits their availability.

We also find it iffy that they don’t have an easy booking process, and their system requires back-and-forth communication. For us, it’s a bit inconvenient since clients need to wait a while for the reply—they’re closed on weekends, too.

In fact, we heard a few complaints about delayed responses. In the future, we hope they can improve their booking system for a faster process.

On a good note, Birch Wellness Center’s marriage counsellors accept evening sessions. Sometimes on weekends, too, depending on the availability.

We also think it’s convenient that they are open to in-person and virtual sessions. There’s no need to worry about scheduling conflicts with your spouse too much!

As for the rates, we appreciate that many counsellors accept sliding scale fees. It makes them accessible for couples on a budget.

Pros

  • Offers in-person and virtual sessions
  • Accepts Saturday sessions
  • Provides free food to clients
  • Has two locations

Cons

  • Limited number of counsellors
  • Gets fully booked fast

Dr. Bolaji Akinyele-Akanbi founded Peace Wholess Centre, catering to individuals, couples, and families. She also takes clients for parent-teen counselling and career coaching.

But one of the most convenient aspects is her two locations in Winnipeg. Her St. Mary’s Road and Lakewood Boulevard branches make her accessible.

The downside is that she’s a one-woman team, which limits her availability. It also poses another drawback: she gets booked fast for in-person sessions!

Furthermore, there are times she cannot accept new in-person counselling appointments. So, couples must opt for virtual sessions, which not everyone prefers.

That also means no male counsellor is available. On the bright side, Dr. Bolaji accepts Saturday counselling sessions—good news for busy clients.

It’s also worth noting her warm and encouraging approach. The clients we surveyed praised her for the comfortable environment she created, which made them feel at ease.

Notably, Dr. Bolaji has extensive experience working with married couples, especially as a registered clinical social worker. Additionally, she has vast expertise and knowledge, from anxiety to domestic violence issues.

Another favourite aspect of ours is her dedication to helping low-income families. She goes the extra mile by providing free food to her clients, which we believe shows her dedication.

Pros

  • Specializes in marriage counselling
  • Has in-person, phone, and virtual sessions
  • Speaks English and German

Cons

  • Doesn’t accept Saturday sessions
  • Limited counsellors

What we like most about NUYU Therapies is their specialization in marriage counselling. No worries, though, because they also offer individual and family counselling.

Judith Nüesch, their marriage counsellor, uses a holistic counselling approach. It helps resolve conflicts using relational healing, which we think will help couples.

While we appreciate her skills and knowledge, it’s a drawback that NUYU Therapies doesn’t have a lot of counsellors. It keeps clients from choosing who they’re most at ease with.

The silver lining is Nüesch’s warm approach. Her clients complimented her for being encouraging and empowering, which we highly appreciate.

Notably, she speaks English and German—impressive! For us, being bilingual allows her to accept newcomers in Winnipeg.

Her flexibility is also worth mentioning, providing phone, virtual, and in-person appointments. But we were let down upon learning she doesn’t accept Saturday counselling sessions.

As for her areas of expertise, she works with couples dealing with communication, separation, communication, and intimacy issues. There are other areas she handles, too, which are useful for different types of couples.

Price-wise, NUYU Therapies offer slightly lower rates even though they’re not the most affordable in Winnipeg. She charges $195 for a 1.5-hour marriage counselling session.

Lastly, she offers a free 1-hour session if you book five at once. We think that’s a good deal!

Pros

  • Provides in-person and virtual sessions
  • Has affordable rates
  • Has a large team
  • Offers specialized services

Cons

  • Limited availability

Riverbend Counselling caught our attention because of their services aside from marriage counselling. Besides that, they also offer individual, family, and group therapy.

Moreover, we like their specialized services. Those include intensive services and anger management courses for married couples.

Plus, these specialized services come in various sessions at affordable rates. For instance, a couple’s anger management course will have six one-hour sessions at $810 plus GST.

We find their marriage counselling rates inexpensive, too. It starts at $125 for a 60-minute session—see? It’s pretty affordable since others charge $200 and up.

Additionally, we like that they have a pretty large team. There are male and female counsellors for clients to choose who they feel at ease with.

Furthermore, Riverbend Counselling has psychotherapists on board. Their counsellors’ background is quite impressive as well—some have a doctorate in counselling!

Conveniently, they are available for online and in-person sessions. On top of that, some marriage counsellors accept Saturday appointments.

However, it’s important to know that only a few counsellors accept weekend sessions. Also, many of them get fully booked fast and only open bookings on selected dates.

All in all, we like Riverbend Counselling, especially with their professional and patient approach—their clients mentioned this, too! It helps couples feel comfortable during the session, in our opinion.
