Pros
- Has free consultation
- Available on weekends
- Fee details are available on the website
Cons
- Has relatively fewer specialization
- The area around the office usually has heavy traffic
Matthew F. Feehan has been a practitioner of estate law since 1993. His decades of experience as a barrister and the only lawyer in his firm, Feehan Law Office, indicate that his services are proven and tested by time.
But, compared to other attorneys, Feehan only provides real estate and estate law services. Although it is a non-issue, you may need to consult another lawyer with broader specialties if you have a complex case involving commercial properties.
Nevertheless, Feehan doesn’t lag behind with his offerings, and we especially like that he offers free initial consultations.
And unlike other law firms in Edmonton, he’s available on weekends , which provides lots of convenience to clients. Just note that meetings on Sundays are on an appointment basis.
We also like that his legal services fees are available on his website. This is useful for clients who want to compare their rates with other estate attorneys.
Besides that, we like that his firm, Feehan Law Office, is only two minutes away from a transit station. Although its area can experience congested traffic, its accessibility via public and private transportation deserves a plus point in our books!
Overall, many clients we spoke with liked Feehan’s quality of service because of his responsive, organized, and personable approach. We are relieved to know about these because these help in handling cases as important as our loved one’s wills.

- Caters to both individual and corporate clients
- Offers five types of legal services
- Operating since 1959
- Provides 23 other law services
- Accessible via bus and train
Cons
- Only has a roadside parking area
- The area usually has heavy traffic
- Not available on weekends
John Williams is a barrister that has been in practice since 1981. With more than four decades of experience, we think there is no doubt that his advice and works are filled with expertise.
In fact, we found thatmany of his regular clients are the second or third generation of the people he assisted in the past. For us, this makes him a reputable and trustworthy lawyer.
And, many of his long-time and new clients said that he is thorough, organized, and easy to contact. We think this is a relief to know because these traits are necessary for handling wills and estates.
Also, Williams provides estate legal services to commercial clients. This is good news for businesses because most attorneys in this field cater to individual clients.
On a similar note, we think it is worth sharing that Williams has a background in transactional, commercial, real estate, and financial law. His range of expertise would be nifty in business-related legal matters–another asset for entrepreneurs!
We also think it is worth noting that John Williams is a partner at Prowse Chowne LLP, a firm operating since 1959. For us, holding such a position in an established company speaks nothing but credibility.
Prowse Chowne also provides 23 legal services, topping its competitors in our books. We think this is useful in scenarios wherein a client’s estate proceedings overlap with areas outside property law.
Unfortunately, leaving your vehicle in the company’s roadside parking area might be difficult because its block usually has heavy traffic.
Still, we like its location because it is near a bus and train station, making it accessible and convenient for clients riding public transportation.

Pros
- Has a diverse professional background
- Has a background in six areas of law
- Participated in the academe
- Has a 24/7 customer hotline
- Spacious parking area
Cons
- The location is a bit far from transit stops
Timothy Verhaeghe is one of the top choices if you want an Edmonton lawyer with a rich professional background. His appearances in all court levels of Canada and his service as an ad-hoc Crown Prosecutor leaves us assured that his services are of quality.
Furthermore, Verhaeghe has a wide range of expertise that we think be useful in any estate proceedings. Specifically, he specializes in estate, family and real estate law and has a background in criminal, civil, and employment law.
Also, we think his academic feats prove that a passionate lawyer outside of the courtroom. Specifically, he presented at a Legal Education Society Seminar for lawyers in Alberta and is an awardee of the Order of the Athabasca University.
With that said, it’s not shocking that he has pleased numerous clients because of his work. In fact, many of them enjoyed his friendly yet down-to-earth approach, which is good since it helps create a comfortable client-attorney relationship.
Verhaeghe is part of the Verhaeghe Law Office, which has a spacious parking area–a feature we appreciate. But on the flip side, its location is more than five minutes away from bus stations, which is slightly inconvenient for some visitors.
Nevertheless, aside from its 21 legal services, the company’s 24/7 hotline–a feature we think is handy for clients with urgent needs or busy schedules–makes it stand out from its competitors.

Pros
- Fluent in Cantonese
- Worked as a volunteer for low-income individuals
- Available on weekends
Cons
- Relatively younger lawyer
- Only has a roadside parking area
Denny Mah is a budding Edmontonian solo practitioner in our books! Aside from estate law, he is also an expert in business and real estate law–helpful for private and commercial clients.
Aside from that, he volunteered to give legal assistance to low-income individuals in the Student Legal Services of UAlberta. We think this is worth mentioning as this signals his passion and sincerity as a lawyer.
Moreover, Mah is also fluent in Cantonese, which we think is a good news relief for people who are more comfortable communicating in this language.
Meanwhile, he is well-received by his clients because of his receptiveness and how he goes above and beyond with their requests. In our experience, hiring a swift lawyer is an advantage if a case needs urgent action.
And for clients with a tight weekday schedule, we think you will be happy to know that he is available on the afternoons of Saturdays and Sundays.
If you plan on visiting his office using a bus, we are glad to share that there are several transit stops near it. In fact, whichever station you choose, you can reach the firm in less than five minutes of walking!
Leaving your car in the area, on the other hand, would be difficult because the firm’s dedicated parking space is only on the roadside. The block is also known for having heavy traffic during rush hour, a thing we’re quite iffy about.
Lastly, compared to other estate lawyers, Mah is relatively new because he was only admitted to the bar in 2018. The number of things he can offer, nevertheless, makes him a barrister worthy of working with.

Pros
- In practice since 1978
- Appointed as the Queen’s and King’s counsel
- Member of important legal institutions in the country
Cons
- Usually busy because of company position
With experience dating back to 1978, Gordon Barr is, no doubt, one of the most experienced lawyers in Edmonton. In his career, he has received the Queen’s Counsel and King’s Counsel titles, which makes the quality of his service all the more reliable.
Also, his experience in different levels of the Canadian court and membership in the Business Law and Wills and Estate Subsection of the Canadian Bar Association tells usthat his work in the field of property law–especially in estate law–is exceptional.
And we are glad to share that many of his clients were satisfied with his responsive, personable, yet professional approach to them. For us, this deserves a plus because excellent communication is a must when it comes to matters related to assets.
Meanwhile, Barr is one of the founding partners of the BARR LLP, which has been around since 1998 that assists Edmontonians in service in seven branches of law. In our books, being a core member of an established firm guarantees that his services are consistent.
But we must note that Barr’s position in the company makes his availability slim compared to other lawyers. Although it is understandable, we think this is something to remember when setting an appointment with him.
Lastly, BARR LLP is located at Sun Life Place, a sky-high commercial area with ample space for parking. The location is also ideal for public transportation riders because it is near the Churchill light rail station and other bus stops on Jasper Avenue.
