7 Filling Brunch Spots in Winnipeg That Aren’t Just an Excuse for Morning Mojitos

If there’s a city that does brunch right, it has to be Winnipeg. As someone who takes “breakfast as the most important meal of the day” seriously but fails to be the early bird, finding new brunch spots around the city has become part of my daily routine.

I have some go-to spots, but I still find satisfaction in discovering hidden gems, and I want to share my recent finds here! Also, the place must meet specific criteria, including offering a great ambience, a good selection of tasty breakfast meals (and coffee), and Instaworthy interiors.

So, after scouring the streets of Manitoba’s capital, we’ve ended up with quite a solid list, so you’ll know where to head for your next brunch! Whether you’re looking for a chill hangout spot or your next breakfast go-to, keep on reading!

Our pet peeve in brunch spots is dishes that look appealing but fail to quench our hunger, which is why Clementine Cafe is one of our favourites in Winnipeg. Their dishes aren’t just for the ‘Gram, but they’ll also fill your stomach and satisfy your tastebuds at the same time!

A prime example of their selection of hearty dishes is the braised bacon Benedict, which features thick and tender slices of pork belly. This alone is already filling, but they serve it alongside buttermilk biscuits (must-try) and poached eggs!

The place itself is a cozy little nook that charms its diners with its warm lighting, brick walls, and dark wooden floors. We also recommend visiting this brunch spot with your kids, as they project cartoon shows on their walls!

Pro tip:

If you want the perfect blend between sweet and savoury, we recommend ordering their waffles as your main and ordering a side of maple-braised bacon for only CAD8!

Modern Electric Lunch is one of the most Instaworthy brunch spots in Winnipeg. The overall design is tasteful, featuring unique light fixtures, tiled counters, simple wooden furniture and large windows that allow natural sunlight to come in during brunch.

However, it’s hard to focus on these designs when the dishes themselves are just as beautiful—and delicious! One of the stars of their menu is the breakfast sandwich, which is filled to the brim with ingredients like over-easy eggs, meaty bacon strips, and greens.

Their coffee selection is quite varied as well, offering classics such as Americanos, cappuccinos, and flat whites. We also recommend keeping an eye out for their seasonal latte, as it sometimes offers interesting flavours like berries & cream.

Pro tip:

You can also choose this brunch spot if you’re looking to catch up with your friends over some cocktails. They offer a wide variety of mimosas as well as a refreshing strawberry mojito that uses real strawberries!

Dining at OEB Breakfast Co. is always a treat due to its beautiful sunlit interior, complete with strikingly coloured walls and furniture. Furthermore, entering its doors always makes us feel like those cartoons where they’ll start levitating and follow an aromatic smell.

One dish that never fails to give us this feeling is their breakfast poutine, which is a combination of two words that I never thought would be seen together. However, OEB somehow makes it work, like in their Confit De Canard, which adds sous-vide duck confit and cranberry to the mix.

The restaurant’s boundary-pushing abilities can also be seen in its egg Benedict selection! For instance, you can go the traditional route and have your Benny with ham and Canadian bacon or try something new, like the Korean bulgogi egg Benedict.

Pro tip:

You can reach OEB Breakfast Co. by simply taking the bus and getting off at the Southbound Main at Portage and Main Junction station. This will take you directly to Winnipeg Square, where the restaurant is located.

If you’re like me and you love to start your mornings with something sweet, then La Crêperie Ker Breizh should be on your radar because of their French crepes! They can feature several fillings like roasted bananas, jam, and ice cream, but our favourite is the caramelised apples.

They also offer savoury fillings like ham, eggs, and smoked beef, but if you really want something meaty, we recommend ordering their croque monsieur. This hearty sandwich will get you going with its homemade bechamel, cheese, and ham!

Don’t ignore their baked goods either, as they offer some amazing, freshly made pastries, such as croissants and pain au chocolat. One of these pastries, paired with their authentic espresso drinks, is a match made in heaven!

Pro tip:

If you want to order something that your nutritionist will be proud of, that doesn’t skimp out on flavour; you must try their alade chèvre chaud. This house salad is instantly elevated by the addition of melted goat cheese, honey, and nuts!

Dining at an authentic French bistro has never been more accessible in Winnipeg, thanks to Pauline Bistro. This place nails the motif by offering charming tiled floors, elegant light fixtures, wall murals, and, of course, the lingering aroma of freshly brewed espresso drinks!

It also helps that their menu consists of French-inspired brunch dishes, like the croque madame, thick brioche buns, house-smoked bacon strips, fried egg, and Swiss cheese! It’s the perfect dish to start the day, especially when paired with the bistro’s Fairtrade Coffee.

We’re also suckers for their big meaty burgers, especially the cheeseburger! It features two perfectly grilled patties that are blanketed with gooey cheddar cheese and dressed with pickles and dijonnaise.

Pro tip:

No matter what you order, we recommend ending your meal with their tiramisu! They do this dish the authentic way by featuring dark rum ganache, then adding their own spin by throwing on a generous marble chocolate glaze.

Two Kelly’s Cafe is a great choice if you’re simply looking for a quick breakfast fix in a cozy setting. It’s the perfect example of a homey restaurant, featuring a small, minimalistic, but welcoming space that offers warm lighting.

The dish will transport you back to your childhood as well, as they offer staple breakfast/brunch items. The perfect example of this is the aptly named classic breakfast, which features eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, hash browns, and toast!

If you’re visiting with your friends or family members, however, we recommend getting their platters! They offer chicken fingers, salad, pizza, and sandwiches that are perfect for sharing and don’t skimp on ingredients.

Pro tip:

Don’t miss out on their poutine! It’s the quintessential version of the national dish, and you can even choose between homemade or crinkle-cut fries!

Buvette is a hidden gem located in a residential area that oozes with charm. You’ll hardly spot it from the outside because it’s located in an apartment, but once you get a glimpse of that “Open” sign and get a whiff of what they’re cooking, you’ll know you’re in for something good!

Visiting this place is always a treat because of their rotating menu to keep things fresh for regulars. For instance, you could be ordering their classic Eggs Benny one day, and be surprised that they’re offering banh mi by the next.

It’s also a great spot to get drinks, as they offer different types of refreshing mimosas! Meanwhile, if you’re off alcohol but still want to try interesting concoctions, you can also enjoy their mocktails.

Pro tip:

Be sure to order their pastries here because they’re too good to pass up! If you can order only one, however, you must get their cinnamon rolls.
