3 Amusement Parks Perfect for Family Days in Edmonton

Come summer break, Edmonton becomes one of the best destinations for the entire family. It’s a place that I’ve always looked forward to visiting when that bell rang, knowing that I’ve got two months of fun waiting for me.

Today, I’m still carrying this tradition with my own family, and I must say, the amusement parks never get old! We can spend entire days in these places and never run out of things to see, new (and sometimes unhealthy) snacks to eat, and of course, rides to try!

This gave me the idea of making this list, as I knew that families in other parts of Canada or even the world can sometimes run out of things to do. So tag along with me and read on as I help you find your next family day destination with these amusement parks in Edmonton!

Galaxyland is one of the largest indoor theme parks in Canada, featuring over 20 rides that cater to different types of visitors. Each ride here is classified into three categories: beginner (which is great for kids), intermediate, and advanced.

The latter two offer a bit more action, which can be enjoyed by people of all ages, especially those looking for a more adrenaline-filled experience. One of the standouts from their selection is the Space Shot, which lets you blast off from the ground at 55km/h!

The theme park doesn’t fall short of classic rides as well, like bump cars, carousels, and a pirate ship ride. If you’re looking for a different kind of amusement, however, you can check out their three-storey rope course at GI Joe Ninja Training.

Pro tip:
If you’re looking for a more relaxing experience with your kids, you can try riding one of the swans at the Birds of Paradise attraction located on the first level of West Edmonton Mall. Tickets are sold on-site only and cost CAD20 for a maximum of two adults.

It wouldn’t be a complete summer getaway without a trip to World Waterpark, one of the best places to cool down and experience unmatched thrills. This is also located inside West Edmonton Mall, so you can hit two birds with one stone by visiting it after GalaxyLand.

However, we feel like you won’t have time for both, as this attraction alone features various attractions. One of our favourites among its rides is the Double Trouble, which is a massive twisty slide that spans 450 feet in length.

You’re guaranteed to scream your lungs out at the park’s selection of extreme slides as well—case in point, the Sky Screamer. The starting point of this slide is 80+ feet high and features a near-vertical drop that can get you speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour!

Pro tip:
If you’ve always wanted to learn how to surf but the fear of the ocean prevents you, this is the best place to visit! They offer surfing lessons in a controlled environment that mimics actual waves, costing just around CAD80.

Fort Edmonton Park is better described as a “living museum” than an amusement park, as stepping foot here feels like going back in time. It features a street that’s been modelled to look like it’s from the 1920s, featuring old-timey stores, houses and even a fully functional cinema!

However, the main star of the show here is the 1920s Midway & Exhibition, which accurately depicts the year’s nostalgic carnival experience. Complete with classic carnival games, fun prizes, slides, wacky mirror rooms, etc., this place will make you feel like a kid again!

Of course, you can’t leave without checking out the beautifully recreated Ferris wheel, where you can catch beautiful views of the Edmonton skyline. Nothing beats the feeling of being on top of this ride while munching on some classic carnival-style food!

Pro tip:
If you want to stay overnight within the area of Fort Edmonton Park, you can check in at Hotel Selkirk. It follows the same vintage style as the rest of the park, and it’s located near points of interest like Tom Thumb’s Mini Golf Course, the Capitol Theatre, etc.
