Pros

  • Open daily
  • Specialises in domestic and exotic animals
  • Uses Avian Fear Free technique
  • Known for good handling of pets

Cons

  • Cases of longer waiting time
  • Higher prices

Harvest Pointe Animal Hospital is a locally-owned animal hospital specialising in domestic and exotic animals. Its owners are a team of veterinarians with their own expertise in treating a wide range of services.

The first thing we noticed is the vast array of animal specialisations. It includes small mammals like chinchillas, hedgehogs, and sugar gliders.

Additionally, they also treat reptiles, birds, fish, and amphibians. We’re highly impressed by this since there aren’t many vet clinics in Edmonton specialising in exotic care.

Moreover, they have veterinarians that focus on exotic animal care. Some even own exotic pets, which we believe can help with how they socialise with owners of exotic animals.

Another thing we’re impressed with is the vet clinic’s focus on Avian Fear Free care. It’s an approach to reducing bird patients’ stress and anxiety.

What’s more, increased stress can negatively affect birds’ health. That’s why we’re glad the veterinarians are trained in the Fear Free method.

Besides that, Harvest Pointe veterinarians have a tonne of experience in routine and emergency surgeries for all the animals they specialise in. To add, they have a surgery room with complete equipment.

We like that they regularly update their social media pages so you can see their patients at the clinic. We believe exotic pet owners can feel at ease knowing that the vets and staff can handle their pets properly.

All seems great so far, but we heard they could improve their booking system since clients had to wait a while, even with appointments. Also, past clients mentioned the higher prices.

On a positive note, past clients told us the staff and veterinarians were careful when handling pets. They were also praised for their knowledge and helpfulness.

Lastly, Harvest Pointe Animal Hospital is open daily and they’re also equipped for urgent care.

Pros

  • Easy booking process
  • Have strict safety protocols
  • Accepts urgent care
  • Treats rabbits, birds, and pocket pets

Cons

  • Closed on Sundays
  • Limited veterinarians for exotic pets
  • No after-hours emergency

Dr Hany Naguib, an experienced veterinarian, runs Rutherford Veterinary Clinic in Edmonton. One of their missions is to educate pet owners to ensure safe, healthy, and happy animals.

We’re glad they have an easy booking process. Also, they have strict protocols to ensure the safety of the staff, patients, and clients.

Currently, only one person is allowed with the pet. For medications, they do curb-side pick-ups to avoid too many people inside the clinic.

Additionally, they accept emergency appointments. Just remember to call the vet clinic to give the veterinarian and staff time to prepare for your pet’s treatment.

But they don’t accept emergencies during after-hours. On the other hand, they have a list of emergency vet clinic recommendations on their website.

Aside from domestic pets, like cats and dogs, they treat rabbits and birds. We’re glad to hear they also treat pocket pets, which include guinea pigs and hamsters.

However, there are only selected veterinarians that can treat exotic animals. We suggest calling in before scheduling an appointment to confirm the dates for available exotic vets.

The clients we surveyed mentioned that the staff was knowledgeable and responsive. Booking an appointment was easy because the front desk was helpful over the phone.

Furthermore, the veterinarians showed great care for the pets. They were compassionate, especially during difficult situations.

Finally, Rutherford Veterinary Clinic is closed on Sundays. We recommend booking ahead for a Saturday appointment if you work on weekdays.

Pros

  • Treats domestic and exotic animals
  • AAHA member
  • Separate rooms for cats and dogs
  • Accepts pet food orders

Cons

  • Higher prices
  • Closed on Sundays
  • Doesn’t accept after-hour emergencies

A full-service veterinary clinic, Castledowns Animal Hospital, provides care to domestic and exotic animals. They offer a wide variety of surgical and dental services.

We want to start by mentioning their location. They are in a residential area with many parking spots in front of the building.

Just be aware of street parking, as you may get towed if you park on private property.

For more than 30 years, they’ve been a member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). It entails high standards for small animal hospitals, which we believe can give peace of mind to potential clients.

We appreciate that their facility has separate rooms for dogs and cats. Considering they may get nervous around each other, we think clients will enjoy this.

We think that one of their most notable services is ordering food for your pets from the clinic. This can be a good option if you have difficulty finding pet food.

But do expect around five business days for your order to arrive. It’s important to know that you can get your orders on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

However, expect to shell out more money on surgery. Past clients mentioned their prices were higher than similar services.

On a good note, they have a pretty big team for a small clinic. In addition, the staff were accommodating regarding inquiries about treatments and medications.

Remember that Castledowns Animal Hospital doesn’t accept emergency services outside regular office hours. But they have a list of trusted 24-hour clinics on their website.

Pros

  • Open since 1952
  • AAHA-accredited
  • Offers a wide variety of services
  • Treats small mammals

Cons

  • Limited parking
  • Long wait time

South Side Animal Hospital has been in the industry since 1952. It provides services to small animals to Edmontonians.

In 1964, it received accreditation from AAHA. To this day, only around 15%  of veterinary clinics in North America have been accredited.

Although they normally accept pet boarding, they had to halt this service due to some COVID-19 restrictions for vet clinics. But we recommend checking now and then in case they can board pets once again.

We appreciate the wide variety of medical and surgical services they offer. They do chemotherapy treatments too.

Right now, they are currently unable to provide advanced radiation treatments. On the positive side, they can refer you to a different clinic, but it’s quite far away in Calgary.

An improvement that we feel they need is communication with clients. There were issues with a longer wait time, which can sometimes delay the client’s schedule for the day.

Also, we recommend coming in early for your appointment to find a good parking spot. There isn’t a tonne of parking space, which can be a bit inconvenient.

On the positive side, South Side Animal Hospital veterinarians were helpful and knowledgeable. Past clients told us about their positive experiences, including being reassured during a tough time with their pets.

5. Companion Veterinary Clinic

Pros

  • Offers a wide variety of services
  • Fear Free certified
  • Provides dog training
  • Offers kitten kindergarten
  • Focuses on calming environment foe pets

Cons

  • Closed on weekends
  • Doesn’t treat exotic pets
  • Can improve on sending updates

Located in South Edmonton, Companion Veterinary Clinic provides various services catered to domestic animals to ensure high-quality health care. Its services include vaccinations to ultrasounds.

The vet clinic is amongst the Fear Free certified practices in Canada. It ensures all pets have a stress-free and calming environment to minimise anxiety.

Moreover, the staff received additional training to guarantee they could give a comfortable experience to nervous pets. Potential clients will appreciate the care their pets will receive a the clinic.

What’s more, they use treats, calming music, and pheromones to keep your pets happy. We particularly like this, especially since many animals are usually scared of going to a vet appointment.

Another thing we appreciate is their training classes. There are a bunch available, including puppy socialisation and trick training.

In addition, they offer behaviour modification if your dog shows signs of aggression and fear. But remember, you need a referral form from your veterinarian.

However, this has limited availability, with a waiting time of around two to four weeks. So, we’re glad they have preventative care for dogs with behavioural problems.

But if you’re a cat person, we’re glad they have kitten kindergarten. It’s a class for your tiny furry friend to prevent behaviour issues.

Unfortunately, their operating hours aren’t convenient for working fur parents because they’re closed on weekends. Due to this, some clients didn’t receive any follow-ups until the next day.

Also, we hope they can improve on sending regular updates. Some clients with confined pets due to surgery didn’t receive updates after the surgery.

All in all, we appreciate the wide range of services at Companion Veterinary Clinic. But if you have an exotic pet, you may have to find a different vet clinic in Edmonton.
