Pros
- Provides transfer from hospital
- Reasonable pricing
- Doesn’t profit from product sales
- No pushy sales tactics
Cons
- Limited parking space for large funerals
- By appointment only
Ethical Death Care is a small service with a team with over 65 years of combined experience in the industry. One of the things we commend is their reasonable and transparent pricing.
They offer cremation, traditional burial, simple burial, celebration of life, and urns. We like the variety because it allows families to choose their preferred burial option.
Moreover, they offer comprehensive services. For instance, this includes a Winnipeg Free Press obituary placement.
Additionally, their simple burial service includes transfer from the hospital. But it does come with an additional fee if the facility doesn’t have temperature-controlled rooms since it requires immediate response.
Furthermore, they sell urns, headstones, catering, and obituary publications but do not profit from them. Since they don’t benefit from those, there are no pushy sales tactics, which we appreciate during times of grieving.
We also appreciate they sell jewellery urns for families to keep their loved ones close by. Many are available for engraving and also for fingerprints.
As for their facility, we like how well-maintained it is. It seats up to 150 guests or a little more than that sometimes.
Ethical Death Care’s facility has parking spaces in front. However, it’s not enough for burials with over 100 guests and most parking areas around are reserved for other companies.
They are strictly on an appointment basis only. So make sure to call ahead before coming in because there’s a chance no one will be present to entertain you.

Pros
- Offers pre-plan funeral arrangements
- Accommodates up to 250 guests
- Pet-friendly facility
- Provides professional grief counsellors
Cons
- Limited cemetery sections for pre-plan discount
- Higher prices
A Dignity Memorial network member, Klassen Funeral Home has been around since 1970. They mainly cater to the North Kildonan area.
They offer traditional burials and cremation services. They also offer prepaid cremation property and burial plans for families who prefer to plan ahead of time.
Besides those, they offer 10% off on cemetery property for pre-plan arrangements. However, this is available only for limited sections of the cemetery.
Moreover, these arrangements can be personalized to add a unique element to honour the deceased. We highly appreciate this service because it reduces the stress for families while planning funerals.
Their facility impressed us as it’s quite spacious, with a piano on site. The chapel can accommodate up to 250 guests, and the reception area is large enough for catering.
Additionally, they have a pet-friendly facility. Not all funeral homes in Winnipeg are, which is why we admire them for this.
Another service we appreciate is their funerals can be arranged by phone call or email. There’s no need to visit the facility personally, which benefits grieving families and those living outside Winnipeg.
We commend Klassen Funeral Home for providing a compassion helpline for families of the deceased. They have professional grief counsellors available for unlimited visits for 13 months after the funeral service.
But the downside is their rates are a tad higher than other funeral homes in Winnipeg. That’s an issue, especially for families with tight budgets.

Pros
- Funeral home is beside the cemetery
- Has a spacious facility
- Provides free online tributes
- Pre-planning includes funeral transfers
Cons
- Some reports of miscommunication
- High prices
Since 1951, Chapel Lawn Funeral Home & Cemetery has serviced Winnipeg customizable funeral arrangements. They service any religion and cultural groups, a quality we highly respect.
They have 89 acres of cemetery land, which gives loved ones plenty of space to grieve peacefully. They have a funeral home built in 1983, which is convenient since no long travel is needed to get to the cemetery.
Their facility is well-maintained, which we appreciate. Their chapel even accommodates up to 200 guests.
Additionally, they have a full kitchen and a spacious reception area for guests to mingle while honouring the deceased. Since their area isn’t near too many establishments, there won’t be too much traffic noise during the memorial.
Moreover, they provide free online tributes at their memorial website, Sharing Memories. We commend this because it allows relatives and friends to pay tribute even from far away.
Conveniently, they offer pre-planning arrangements to help families from struggling financially after the death of a loved one. This is important, and we appreciate their thorough service, including transferring funeral plans to any of their locations in Canada.
It was disappointing, though, to hear reports of miscommunication regarding the placement of graves. It’s also a drawback that their prices are more on the expensive side.

Pros
- Convenient location
- Spacious chapel and facility
- Provides indoor and outdoor funeral receptions
Cons
- Some instances of sales talk
- Some complaints about poor communication
In 1961, Glen Lawn Funeral Home & Cemetery opened its doors in Winnipeg to provide funeral, cremation, and cemetery services. Their location is away from the hustle and bustle of the city, allowing families to grieve peacefully.
Moreover, their facility and funeral home is inside their 40-acre cemetery. We were glad about that because of the convenience of having the whole arrangement in one location.
Their chapel seats guests up to 225, which is convenient since it’s spacious for all families and friends to attend the funeral. We also like that they have indoor and outdoor spaces for funeral receptions, allowing families to choose their preferred area.
They also have a pre-planning specialist that assists with all the arrangements for peace of mind. This will also cover the necessary expenses to prevent families from paying high prices in case of death.
The clients we conversed with complimented the staff’s professionalism and compassion. However, some felt there was some pushy sales talk when trying to sell services or products.
Another hiccup is the front desk, which some clients felt needed more communication training when dealing with grieving families. We understand that since the front staff is usually the first point of contact.

Pros
- 4x Consumer Choice Award winner
- Has an in-house catering
- Doesn’t charge for the death of a child
Cons
- 3 locations are by appointment only
- Crematorium is in Selkirk only
Voyage Funeral Home and Crematorium was founded in 1998. Now, it has five locations in Manitoba—three of them in Winnipeg. They offer traditional burials, cremation, and funerals.
They won the Consumer Choice Award for Business Excellence four times. That recognition left us impressed as it shows their service quality.
One of their services includes anticipating death at home. We found this helpful because it reduces the stress of worrying about the arrangements.
Furthermore, this service needs prior arrangements made with the family doctor, Palliative Care Program, and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.
Another convenient aspect we appreciate is their in-house catering service. Because of this, there’s no need to worry about hiring one since families can talk to just one person about the arrangements.
Losing a loved one is hard enough, but losing a child is the most difficult experience to accept. That’s why we also commend their compassion because they don’t charge for the death of a child.
The people we conversed with appreciated Voyage Funeral Home and Crematorium’s staff for their empathy and honesty. We were also told the staff were friendly and didn’t push any sales talk.
Unfortunately, three of their locations are available by appointment only. Their crematorium is also located in Selkirk only, which is about 40 minutes away from Winnipeg.
