Pros

  • Has 20 years of refractive surgery experience
  • First Canadian to rank first on the American Board of Ophthalmology’s oral exam
  • Expert in five types of eye surgery
  • One of the few CXL+T-PRK users in Canada
  • First to use IntraLase in Ontario

Cons

  • Can be late to appointments
  • Some reports on lack of responsiveness to patients’ queries

Dr. Ghislain-André Boudreault received his certification in ophthalmology in 1984 from the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada.

We were impressed to know that he’s done four fellowships in four universities in the United States. He is also the first Canadian to top the American Board of Ophthalmology’s oral exam.

Throughout his 20 years of service as a refractive eye surgeon, he has performed over 50,000 ocular procedures. Clearly, Dr. Boudreault’s expertise is evident in his decades of experience and the amount of work he jas accomplished.

Aside from the common LASIK surgery, he can also do other types of eye surgery, among them CXL+T-PRK. This is a dual eye surgery method that not only cures keratoconus but also fixes the irregularities and improves the cornea.

We find this worth mentioning because only a few in Canada can expertly conduct this procedure.

We discovered too that Dr. Boudreault is also the first in East Ontario to use IntraLase femtosecond laser for All-LASIK eye surgery, which goes a long way in improving precision.

Dr. Boudreault’s clients applaud his thoughtfulness during the procedure. One client recalled that he gave him a blanket because the surgery room was cold, as well as a stress ball to help channel his nerves.

Given that he is active in the other eight provinces, we’re told that he can be late to his appointments. But we think that this is a small price to pay for top-calibre care.

Pros

  • Has 15 years of experience
  • Owns two eye clinics
  • Worked as a clinical investigator
  • First to perform iLASIK in Alberta
  • Eye surgeon for a hockey team
  • Performed over 75,000 LASIK surgeries

Cons

  • Some complaints about unprofessional staff
  • Reports of consistent tardiness

Dr. Joseph King has been an ophthalmologist for more than 25 years, following his post-residency training at the University of South Florida Eye Institute.

He mainly performs his eye surgery duty in his clinic, King LASIK, and Fraser Valley Cataract and Laser Centre. Dr. King is also one of the commonly referred eye surgeons in LASIK MD and other eye clinics in the US.

In addition to being an ophthalmologist, Dr. King was also a clinical investigator in refractive surgery research. As a result, he was the first to use some of the latest eye surgery equipment in Canada, such as the Intralase and AMO VISX laser.

We found that Dr. King also serves as the eye surgeon of the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks. This speaks volumes about his credibility and the high level of trust he’s been able to establish with noteworthy clients.

We are amazed that Dr. King has already performed more than 120,000 refractal surgeries throughout his career.

Dr. King’s passion for his work carries over to his approach to patient care. The majority of his patients loved that he spent extra time with them before the procedure to answer any questions or concerns they may have about their surgeries.

His patients’ only gripe is that he is usually late for more than an hour because of his visits to his clinics in Canada and US, resulting in a jam-packed schedule. But it seems it’s worth the wait, given that it hasn’t been a deterrent to them seeing him again.

Apparently, his patients seem to be frustrated with his staff as well. We heard that their bedside  manners could use some polishing – so we hope Dr. King can speak to his team regarding this.

Pros

  • Has 12 years of surgical experience
  • Patented a surgical device
  • Trained in seven types of eye surgery
  • Professor at the UAlberta
  • Featured in the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology

Cons

  • Some reports on needing to work on punctuality
  • Performed lesser number of eye surgeries than other surgeons of his calibre

Backed with a residency experience from the University of Alberta, Dr. Kamrouz “Kam” Kassiri has been practising for twelve years. Aside from LASIK, he can also perform six more types of eye surgery.

He owns an eye clinic named Buski Eye Center in Edmonton.

Among the six other laser eye surgeries, we think refractive lens exchange (RLE) is worth mentioning, as this is recommended for patients needing a natural lens replacement.

Patients unqualified for LASIK or other laser surgeries will be glad to know that he can also offer this option.

Aside from being an eye surgeon, we found that he is also an assistant clinical professor at the University of Alberta.

His pursuit for knowledge and education in his discipline has not gone unrecognised, either. The Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology (CJO) featured his co-authored research article on ophthalmic protocols at the peak of COVID-19.

We also discovered that he and his students patented a surgical device for strabismus surgery. It led them to receive the top award in the National Design Competition of the Canadian Society of Manufacturing Engineers in 2009.

Patients of Dr. Kassiri love his genuine concern for and sincerity towards them. For instance, an elderly couple diagnosed with a cataract shared that he spent extra time accomodating all their concerns and questions despite his busy schedule.

But much like a lot of well-known and established doctor, Dr. Kassiri is notorious for his lateness. He can be up to an hour late for appointments – so if you find his expertise worth it, set aside extra time in your day for this delay.

Dr Kassiri has performed lesser surgeries than others on this list. Still, 15,000 surgeries is a commendable number, and there is no denying how well-credentialed he is.

4. Dr. Richard Léger

Pros

  • Has 25 years of experience
  • Specialises in five eye surgeries
  • Has experience working in hospitals
  • Conducted 80,000 ocular procedures
  • Fluent in French

Cons

  • Some reports of not addressing patients’ queries
  • No professional recognitions received yet

Dr. Richard Léger has been an ophthalmologist for more than 25 years. He has been the medical director for LASIK MD’s branch in Western Canada for more than 18 years.

Before working at LASIK MD, Dr. Léger has worked at several hospitals and LASIK eye clinics, such as the Institut Laser Visuel in Québec City.

We found that he has five laser eye surgery specialties–and one of those is Laser Presbyvision. This is perfect for patients who have lost their up-close reading abilities.

To date, he has conducted more than 80,000 ocular procedures, which is nothing short of impressive.

We also discovered that Dr. Léger is one of the eye surgeons in Calgary who is fluent in French, which will be helpful to French-speaking patients who prefer to speak in their native tongue.

More than his finesse in surgery, Dr. Léger’s apparently has a wicked sense of humour, which his patients can attest to. One of his patients mentioned that the doctor shares jokes and laughs with them during the procedure as a way to distract them from their nerves.

We’re told, though, that he has a tendency to leave some questions unaddressed. This may be unsettling for extra-nervous patients who probably just need reassurances from him about their procedure.

Also, among the LASIK surgeons we listed, Dr. Léger is the only one who hasn’t won awards yet. Not a dealbreaker, though – with his accomplishments, we wouldn’t be surprised if recognitions are just around the corner.

Pros

  • Has 14 years of experience
  • Has two fellowships
  • Can do seven types of eye surgery
  • Works as an assistant professor
  • Co-authored ten research articles
  • Authored a curriculum for practitioners
  • Featured on TV

Cons

  • Long waiting times
  • Lesser ocular procedures offered than his counterparts

Dr. Michael W. Dorey is one of the few LASIK surgeons who had two fellowships in surgery. He got his Ocular Pathology fellowship at the University of Ottawa and finished his Glaucoma/Anterior Segment fellowship at the Drexel University College of Medicine.

Since then, he has been performing refractive surgery for over 14 years. We are amazed that Dr. Dorey can do all seven types of laser eye surgery techniques, including PRK, Laser Presbyvision, and CXL+TPRK.

In addition to being an eye surgeon, we also discovered that he works as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Alberta.

His passion for research and education does not end in teaching at the university. He has published several and co-authored ten research articles on ophthalmology.

Also,  the American Academy of Ophthalmology recognised and featured his proposed new curriculum for practising ophthalmologists. Also, notable news publications CTV, Global News, and CBC featured his works on micro-invasive surgical techniques.

Previous patients of Dr. Dorey appreciate his reassurances before their procedure. One of his clients, a 26-year-old with a cataract, remembered that the doctor even encouraged him to ask questions to help ease his anxiety.

However, due to Dr. Dorey’s reputation, prepare for a long wait on the day of your appointment. Patients have reportedly waited anywhere between 1 to 2 hours just to get seen.

While he and his staff are commendable for updating their patients on delays from their end, it would be good to revisit their daily patient load to avoid long queues.

We also noticed that he has only performed 40,000 surgeries thus far, which is relatively lesser than his counterparts. But there’s nothing alarming about this, as 40,000 procedures represent 40,000 patients who have been served – that’s still an impressive number.
