Financial Proof Increases in 2025 for International Students in Canada
Following the reduction of the number of study permits to be issued in 2025, Canada will raise the financial support requirements for international students starting September 1, 2025.
The IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada) has announced that study permit applications submitted on or after September 1 of this year will need to follow the new rules.
A single individual must now meet the minimum requirement of CAD22,895, which is over CAD2000 more than the previous amount of CAD20,635. That is exclusive of tuition and other fees.
This is to prove that the student has sufficient funds to support themselves and their family in Canada without having to apply for work.
The financial support increases with every additional family member. For a family of four, the new requirement is CAD42,543.
This rule applies to all provinces and territories, except Quebec, which follows different terms.
What does this mean for international students?
The new financial support signifies that only international students with the means to fund themselves without having to work can study in Canada. This change echoes the current cost of living in the country.
