Since 2009, Union Wood Co has built custom furniture for Vancouver clients. They specialise in large pieces, like conference tables and storage, but also make small goods, like bottle openers!

They mainly work on custom items, but it’s cool that there are a good number of pre-designed products for those who want to skip the design process. You can still customise these based on your preferences, from size to wood material!

It’s easy to see why most clients we spoke with completely enjoyed their service. They only use sustainably harvested solid wood for high-quality results.

Plus, the work we’ve seen has been consistently incredible. You can tell every project is thoroughly planned—even the designs feel premium.

Unfortunately, pickups are only available on weekdays. It’s fine because there are several delivery options, including one with unpacking and assembly.

Their prices match what you get, too! You’re basically paying for something that will last a long time!

Pros

  • Offers custom and pre-designed items
  • Pre-designed items are customisable
  • Several delivery options available
  • Good value for money

Cons

  • No pickups on weekends

A joy to work with

“As an interior designer, I work with a lot of furniture makers and Union Wood Co was a joy to work with. I ordered a shuffleboard for a project and just installed it and not only is it beautiful and super fun, but it’s a hand crafted piece at a reasonable price! It came fully assembled in the box with everything i needed including the sand! Will definitely be ordering again for future projects.”

When we learned that J&S Custom Furniture Co. has a small team, we thought they couldn’t make what we wanted. As it turned out, we were dead wrong!

Their services cover pretty much anything woodworking-related. They offer design, millwork, metal fabrication, and deconstruction and salvage of antique structures—that’s a lot!

Additionally, we like that they stick to high-quality materials, non-toxic finishes, and reclaimed wood. They even offer various natural and custom finishes!

When we looked at their pre-designed collection, we were in awe because they were well-made and sophisticated. The various collections are a nice perk, and you can see some of them at their showroom.

Getting your item is also convenient with worldwide shipping! Their team will deliver and set up the item to make things easy for you.

However, the 80% retainer is steeper than what we’re used to. Then again, we have no problems with their prices since you get quality craftsmanship.

Pros

  • Wide range of woodworking services
  • Lots of pre-designed items available
  • Offers various custom finishes
  • Provides worldwide shipping
  • Items on display in the showroom

Cons

  • The retainer is priced higher

The rich wood grain, attention to detail and flawless finish bring a sense of warmth and sophistication to any space you really don’t see anymore. Wood Shop is a Vancouver woodworking service that offers it all. Aside from the availability of pre-designed products, they also offer custom-made items, whether big or small.

We love their 100% customisable service, including the design, materials, tones, and other special features you want to add. Their expertise also covers home and commercial products, making them super accessible.

Plus, they have pre-designed furniture available in their shop, although with limited customisation for specific products. They’re still handmade, nevertheless.

One of their best features is that they’re a sustainable woodworking company. They use locally sourced and reclaimed materials, so you’re basically supporting local communities as well.

Everything will be handed to you on a platter. Once the custom wood furniture is done, they’ll arrange for delivery and can even install the product for you—convenient!

They’re a solid woodworking service overall. The designs we’ve seen are beautiful, everything’s manufactured in Vancouver, and you get a lifetime guarantee.

Pros

  • Pre-designed and custom items available
  • Offers installation
  • Provides lifetime guarantee
  • Manufactured in Vancouver

Cons

  • Limited customisation for pre-designed items

When we think about sustainable woodworking, Salvage Vancouver immediately comes to mind. They’re way more than a woodworking service, and you can see why.

They specialise in custom woodworking and can bring your vision to reality. It’s like there’s no end to what they can design and build, including small items, feature walls, and large furniture.

We appreciate that they work with reclaimed wood and they salvage lots of different types of wood. We observed that this resulted in unique and gorgeous custom woodwork that can elevate a space for a reasonable price!

Another service they have is their Wood Market. It’s simply a place where you can purchase reclaimed wood if woodworking is something you want to DIY.

The only catch? They don’t have pre-designed collections since they mainly offer custom woodworking. That’s alright since you can show them an idea and they’ll bring it to life—with quality craftsmanship too, based on what we saw.

Pros

  • Sustainable woodworking
  • Salvages various types of wood
  • Sells reclaimed wood
  • Reasonable pricing

Cons

  • No pre-designed items

On-time and on-budget

“Just want to say thank you for your excellent work in transforming 3 pieces of teak (from Mysteak in Cloverdale) into a beautiful functioning bathroom countertop. Perfectly cutting the sink and tap holes and securing them. On time and on budget. Uplifting.”

Paul Donovan, Google Review

Has an eye for bringing back the life of reclaimed wood

“Luke has crafted several pieces for my home over the years. He has an eye for design and bringing back the life of wood reclaimed from local buildings. Everyone I’ve referred to Luke has been as impressed with his work as I continue to be.”

Established in 2013, MakerLabs is more than a woodworking service—it’s a makerspace, a place where Vancouverites can ask for custom woodwork and learn how to do it themselves.

Although they specialise in workshops, they still have an experienced fabrication team who can design anything you want using various materials. They do custom woodworking but, unfortunately, don’t offer pre-designed items.

What’s awesome is that they offer laser cutting and CNC machining for intricate details on wood. We found this is helpful for business signage and furniture details.

Based on our observations, their wood projects have been of good quality and decently priced, especially when you need to add detailed engravings.

The best part is they can do rush and same-day services, which woodworkers in the area don’t usually offer.

What sets them apart is their woodworking classes in Vancouver, which will teach you the basics. Plus, there are other classes that go hand in hand with woodworking!

Pros

  • Provides intricate fabrication services
  • Available for rush and same-day services
  • Offers woodworking classes

Cons

  • No pre-designed services

Have always been impressed with the results

“I’ve had the pleasure of using many of MakerLabs’ services and have always been impressed with the results. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, making every project a great experience. From laser cutting and CNC to custom foam manufacturing, painting, and woodworking, their expertise shines through. I highly recommend them for collaboration and can’t wait to explore their workshops!”

Process and communication were easy

“Was super appreciative of MakerLabs and the kind and professional staff (Corinne, Thomas, Derek) who assisted with a project using the laser cutter and birch plywood. My request required some guidance and extra work from MakerLabs. They did an amazing job, and the process/communication was easy and enjoyable. The animal puzzles were enjoyed by many participants at our free parks event, thank you!”
