5 Law Firms for Wills in Canada That Will Help You Avoid Family Feuds

  • Fees: The first thing we looked at was the lawyer’s fees to see if they were affordable and transparent.
  • Lawyers: Next, we took a look at the firm's lawyers to see if they possessed the experience and communication skills we were looking for.
  • Website: Also, checked their websites to see if they were user-friendly and offered up-to-date features.
  • Responsiveness: Lastly, we wanted to see how accessible they were by checking how responsive they were on their channels.

Although I haven’t personally experienced it myself, I’ve seen enough movies and soap operas to know how messy wills can be. I even had a friend cut ties with their siblings just because of the unexpected death of a parent—terrible, right?

This brings me to my point of how important it was for my friend (who shall not be named) to get some help from one of the many wills lawyers in Canada. They literally took the burden off their shoulders and provided a smooth transition.

So if you’re going through the same problems, you’ve come to the right place! Below are the best wills lawyers we can recommend in Canada and their strongest suits and lowlights.

Pros

  • User-friendly website
  • Convenient process
  • Solid selection of packages

Cons

  • Doesn’t support Henson Trusts for disabled children
  • Doesn’t support separate wills for business owners

Canadian Legal Wills immediately piqued our attention because of their claim of being the top provider of online wills, power of attorney and living wills. Naturally, we had to take a closer look, and boy were we impressed.

One of the things we appreciated the most about this firm is the user-friendliness of its website. It’s easy to navigate even with all its online features, which by the way, are worth highlighting as well.

A perfect example of their online features is giving clients the ability to build their own packages based on their needs. They can either do this by answering a short quiz from the firm or by handpicking the services presented on the homepage of the site.

Speaking of services, we were quite impressed with their variety. They offer traditional solutions like power of attorney, last will and testament and more!

Another feature we like is their trademarked service, MyLifeLocker, which basically takes the burden off the executor’s shoulders.

With it, a client can compile their every asset, as well as the people to contact for their eventual passing. It also makes sure that all assets are taken into account for the estate distribution.

The only downside we noted with Canadian Legal Wills is that they tend to be a bit unresponsive. We tried reaching out to them a couple of times before actually getting to someone, which we could see being a problem for some clients in the future.

This is of course, on a case-to-case basis, but we thought that it would be worth mentioning.

Pros

  • Great selection of services
  • Responsive
  • Competent and bilingual lawyers.

Cons

  • Closed on weekends
  • Doesn’t display the final price on the website

We’ve heard about Hummingbird Lawyers through word of mouth so we decided to reach out to them ourselves. Fortunately, we did, as we discovered that they offered one of the most complete sets of services for will estate.

Their full suite of services for will and estate includes estate litigation, estate planning, estate administration and more. Furthermore, we also wanted to mention that they also offer corporate will services on top of their personal and family wills.

During our conversation, we were told that they would be pairing us with one of their competent lawyers once our decision was final. By the way, some of these lawyers are bilingual, which we could see coming in handy for several situations.

We also wanted to highlight their responsiveness, as they’re quick to get back to inquiries. More specifically, we appreciated their online channels, as they were highly praised by their past clients whom we interviewed.

Our only gripe with this firm is that they don’t present the fees upfront. We wish that they could display their fees without having to request them just so potential clients could have an idea of what to expect in terms of cost.

Also, it’s not a huge deal for us, but we thought that we should also mention that they’re closed on weekends, as it can be a dealbreaker for some potential clients.

Pros

  • Offers free online consultations
  • Offers a wide array of legal services

Cons

  • Rates aren’t displayed online
  • Closed on weekends

Right off the bat, what intrigued us about Marwah Law during our brief conversation was its wide array of services. Some people might see this as a con, as it gives them the impression that they don’t shift all their focus to one field, and we get that.

Upon our talk, however, we can say with confidence that they have the necessary resources and teams to provide wills and estate planning services. Their services under this umbrella are varied too, as they feature solutions that cater to different situations.

For instance, they offer one of their experienced estate lawyers for those looking to be assisted during the drafting of their wills. They aim to help clients create the best possible draft with backup plans to avoid frequent revisions.

As for its downsides, the only issues that pop up are the rates and limited operating hours. We wished that their rates could be provided upfront as opposed to having to request for them just so potential clients can adjust their budgets.

As for the operating hours, we were bummed to see that they only open on weekdays, which we know can be a huge problem for other people.

All in all, we still think that Matwah Law is one of the most solid options you can go for in Canada with its solid selection of services and free consultations.

Pros

  • Fixed and reasonable prices
  • Features several locations across Canada
  • Outstanding team of lawyers

Cons

  • Reports of unresponsiveness

Axess Law was a name we were familiar with prior to making this list, and upon further inspection, it wasn’t hard to see why. For starters, they have already catered to over 150,000 clients in Ontario alone, making them one of the most reliable firms in Canada.

Numbers don’t easily persuade us, though, which is why we had to talk to them first-hand. One thing we discovered during our conversation was how easy they make wills to be, which is indeed an impressive feat in our books.

They claim that they can help you write your will in 4 easy steps. This involves booking an appointment, submitting necessary documents and drafting a will and from there, an attorney will be paired with you to help finetune your will.

Our only gripe with them is their overall weak communication skills. Although we didn’t experience this first-hand, it’s something worth bringing up.

For instance, we’ve heard various feedback from their past clients on how they had a hard time getting a hold of their customer service when they wanted to make a follow-up inquiry.

We also found out that this type of unresponsiveness leads to various problems, one of which is the difficulty to book their services as per our surveys with their past clients.

If you do get to reach out to them and they respond, we believe that it will be smooth sailing from there, as we think their actual services are stellar.

Pros

  • Solid selection of services
  • Professional staff members

Cons

  • Limited roster of lawyers
  • Occasional unresponsiveness

We always appreciate when traditional firms try to do something refreshing to keep up with the latest trends. That’s why when we saw Paperclip Law’s website, we couldn’t help but reach out to them ourselves because of its modernly designed homepage.

Aside from the user-friendliness of the site, what piqued our attention was their claim to providing “fancy legal stuff without the stuffy legal stuff”. This gave us the impression that they’re unlike other firms, as they aim to make their services easier to understand.

Speaking of services, they also have a solid selection of will and probate solutions like estate administration and estate planning. Both of these services aim to ease the process of both the executors and the trustees.

One particular service of theirs that caught our attention was incapacity planning. We like how it helps clients set a plan for their legacy in the unfortunate event that certain health issues arise.

On the downside, we wish that they could also do consultations on weekends, as we understand that a lot of people don’t have a lot of time on their hands during the weekdays.

Another gripe of ours is their occasional unresponsiveness. We had to reach out a bunch of times before we got a response from their team, and upon checking other reviews online, we discovered that we weren’t alone in our experience.

Although this could mean that their business is booming and it’s a good problem for them, we could see it being considered a red flag for other clients.
