When it comes to patents, Pawlina Law is one of our picks because they’re all about helping small and medium-sized businesses (no large ones, though). We appreciate their assistance to the local community!

Plus, one of their specializations is intellectual property, focusing on patents, copyrights, and trademarks. During our research, we also found their lawyer is a registered trademark agent, which comes in handy during applications to protect your brand.

Even though they haven’t been in the business for very long—their lawyer, Karol Pawlina, was called to the Bar in 2016—we still trust their expertise. They stick to a pragmatic approach to ensure the most tangible and realistic outcomes.

While we like that their office is easily accessible in the Regus building, it was a bummer that they don’t have free consultations. The lawyer’s fees are reasonable, though!

Finally, our surveys showed that they were super professional and informative. Overall, we were thrilled because they made the legal process stress-free.

Pros

  • Works with small and medium-sized businesses
  • Uses a pragmatic approach
  • Easily accessible office
  • Reasonable rates
  • Known for professional approach

Cons

  • No free consultations
  • Not ideal for large businesses
  • Less than a decade of experience

Overall top-notch service

“A+ experience incorporating my therapy practice with Pawlina Law. Karol’s patience and timely and prompt action were fantastic. Even after everything was finalized, he remained available to answer my questions. Highly recommended for anyone seeking top-notch legal service for business incorporation.”

In our books, Heer Law is one of the best because they specialize in intellectual property law. Their founder, Christopher Heer, was even one of the 2024 IAM Patent 1000, which recognizes the most outstanding in patent law.

These guys also offer a 30-minute complimentary initial appointment, which is very budget-friendly. You can choose a phone or video call appointment, which eliminates the need for an office visit, not that it’s hard to visit.

During our research, we found out that they have an incredible team of professionals. This includes intellectual property lawyers, registered patent agents, and registered trademark agents, which basically means you have a complete backup!

Regarding their track record, it was awesome to know that they’ve successfully helped many clients regarding patents. They’ve represented over 2,200 clients, including big names like Louis Vuitton.

The only downside is their fees aren’t exactly the most affordable. But past clients complimented their transparency, which is a plus in our books!

Pros

  • Highly recognized law firm
  • Offers a free 30-minute consultation
  • Worked with big names

Cons

  • Rates can be pricey

Incredible service all around

“I couldn’t describe my experience with Heer Law with anything short of “amazing, wonderful, and grateful!” My initial request for a consultation was responded to promptly by their extremely knowledgeable manager, who is an area expert in intellectual property technology. From there, I worked with Annette. I was treated fairly, invoiced appropriately and there are absolutely no doubts that I received the best possible service for an incredible value. Don’t think twice about working with Heer Law – just call!”

These guys also represent franchisees, franchisors, and franchise associations, being they’re a franchise law firm. They’ve worked with hundreds of brands, which is quite impressive.

We also found during our research that they’ve represented Canadian and international clients. In our books, this shows their impressive track record.

It’s awesome that they’re a cost-effective solution. When we spoke with their previous clients, we learned that there were no hidden charges and the rates aligned with the quality of their service.

Plus, their clients praised their patent lawyers for being patient in explaining the process. For us, that shows how the legal team protects their clients since they ensure everyone’s informed.

The only issue is we didn’t get an immediate response when we called. They’re incredible overall, though!

Pros

  • Highly recognized in the field
  • Ideal for franchise businesses
  • Cost-effective rates

Cons

  • Can improve phone communication

One of our picks is Crookston Law because of their track record. When we were doing our survey, we learned that they’ve successfully handled intellectual property matters, including complex patent litigation cases.

That’s why we weren’t surprised when we found out that they were voted as a leading lawyer by Lexpert and have won multiple awards. Impressive, no?

Speaking of work ethic, past clients have mentioned how professional and patient they were. They were also praised for their attention to detail, which is awesome.

We were also impressed that they can work with various types of clients, specializing in businesses, franchisors and franchisees. But they don’t have a large team of patent lawyers.

Still, they’ve managed to successfully win cases. They’re very honest about it as well, and they even made their cases available on their website.

Finally, their office is easy to get to. It’s an easy commute since there are plenty of bus stops.

Pros

  • Good track record
  • Highly recognized
  • Easily accessible
  • Known for solid work ethic

Cons

In the GTA, JZC Intellectual Property Law is one of our top patent lawyers because of their expertise. They actually specialize in it, which shows their extensive experience in the field.

Their lawyer, Jerry Z. Chen, is also a registered patent and trademark agent. It’s convenient because they can assist you when it comes to patent documentation.

Their focus is more on startups and small businesses. The downside is they’re not ideal for medium and large-sized companies.

On a good note, their expertise is pretty extensive, handling simple and complex cases. Their clients even praised their exceptional knowledge and efficient service, no matter how small or big the case is.

The only downside is their location. Even though they service the GTA, their office is in Richmond Hill, which is 35 minutes from Toronto.

Looking on the bright side, they can assist clients in three languages: English, Mandarin, and Japanese. That makes them accessible to other nationalities, no?

Pros

  • Specializes in intellectual property
  • Focuses on startups and small businesses
  • Speaks three languages
  • Handles simple and complex cases

Cons

  • Not ideal for large businesses
  • Office is in Richmond Hill

Provides top-notch service from day one

“Jerry is absolutely AMAZING. He is professional, attentive and very knowledgeable. From day 1, he provided detailed guidance & insights and consistently did so throughout the process. He made sure that all important points are addressed before submitting the application. It was the best experience I’ve ever had working with a professional. I highly recommend to anyone who needs help with trademark application, and especially to amazon sellers for brand registry.”

Jia Kim, Google Review

Top-notch approach

“Before even signing the contract to work together, Jerry was really helpful in giving me a lot of information about the process and what to expect. Jerry was really quick to answer my questions and the patent application was done flawlessly. It’s like he knew my product almost more than I did. Great attitude, friendly demeanor, and knowledgable, I’d recommend him to anyone who needs assistance with patent applications.”
