Pros

  • Has strong ethical practices
  • Uses sustainable materials
  • Accepts virtual and phone appointments
  • Generous warranty policies

Cons

  • Appointment-basis only

FTJCo Fine Jewellery earns a lot of respect from us because of their ethical practices. They partnered in 2021 with SCS Global Services to offer certified eco-friendly diamonds.

It’s also admirable that they strive to reduce their environmental impact, even joining the UN Global Compact in 2020 to pursue sustainability in the jewellery industry. Plus, they only use gold that is certified by Fairmined, an initiative for the best mining practices.

As for their selection, they carry ready-to-wear and made-to-order pieces—all made from sustainable materials, of course! They mostly carry rings but also make necklaces, earrings, and pendants.

Moreover, we think their pieces are exquisite and have unique designs. Surely, there’s one for every client because of the wide variety they offer.

Upon entering their shop in the gorgeous Cabbagetown neighbourhood, clients will be greeted by their welcoming staff. We were happy that they all seemed thrilled to cater to clients.

There’s a minor downside, unfortunately. FTJCo Fine Jewellery is strictly on an appointment basis only and needs advance notice for clients who want to visit on the same day, even for ready-made pieces.

Nevertheless, we appreciate that they accept virtual and phone appointments. They even offer this outside of their regular hours, depending on availability.

Finally, their warranty is pretty great, offering free resizing within the first year, and workmanship defects get a lifetime repair and replacement warranty.

Pros

  • Sells high-end and costume pieces
  • Follows the Kimberley Process
  • An inclusive company
  • Free first meeting with designers

Cons

  • Upfront full payment for gemstones $5,000+

One of the reasons we included Made You Look on our list is their huge selection of jewellery, from wedding rings to costume ones. It’s not just high-end pieces they sell, which we appreciate as every client gets to take home something that fits their budget.

However, purchasing a gemstone priced at $5,000 and up requires full payment upfront. It’s a bit unfortunate there’s no deferred payment terms possible.

Looking on the bright side, we like their selection of unique pieces made from gold, silver, wood, copper, bronze, and so many more materials. The variety allows them to cater to every Torontonian, which we commend them for.

Some of their pieces even look vintage, which we feel adds a distinctive look. It’s a plus that they offer many intricate designs, whether that’s a necklace or ring, which means getting distinctive jewellery.

We also applaud their ethical practices by only sourcing diamonds using the Kimberley Process, which tracks each stone to stop conflict diamonds. They also proudly welcome transgender and non-binary customers, which earns points in our book.

Lastly, Made You Look has a large team of talented in-house designers that can create custom pieces. But the best part is they are available for free in-person and virtual first meetings—convenient!

4. Anne Sportun

Pros

  • Specializes in fine jewellery
  • Has in-person and virtual consultations
  • Lifetime warranty for Anne Sportun pieces
  • Available in other boutiques

Cons

  • Limitation on design requests
  • Warranty depends on featured designers

Designer Anne Sportun has been making jewellery for decades, opening her first atelier back in the 1980s. Her experience is something we admire because it definitely shows in her designs.

She mainly focuses on engagement and wedding fine jewellery pieces. Frankly, we love the variety of her exquisite designs, which we believe shows how she considers that each bride will have their own preferences.

That doesn’t mean clients can’t purchase other types of jewellery. Her beautiful Toronto store has pieces for every occasion, such as gold necklaces, diamond rings, pearl earrings, and bracelet charms.

Anne Sportun also accepts custom designs, which are available for in-person or virtual consultations. But here’s the kicker: she only accepts design requests that fit the brand’s aesthetic.

On a good note, we like the wide array of jewellery because the shop sells pieces by featured designers. It gives clients a lot more choices of wearable jewellery, whether you’re going to a party or a casual brunch.

However, the problem is that there’s no lifetime warranty for featured designers, as each will have their own policies. This warranty is only for Anne Sportun-designed pieces, unfortunately.

But we were glad about how accessible her jewellery is because Canadians can purchase from boutiques all over the country. It’s also helpful there’s free shipping for orders over $500.

5. Anice Jewellery

Pros

  • Offers custom-on-the-spot jewellery
  • Uses pre-loved and recycled materials
  • Doesn’t use blood diamonds
  • Provides vintage and pre-loved jewellery

Cons

  • Not all pieces available for Ossington pickup

Located in the cool street of Ossington Avenue, Anice Jewellery is one of our favourite spots for custom pieces. They’ve been around for over a decade, and we admire how consistent they’ve been with quality.

We adore their jewellery collections, offering modern and vintage designs. But they actually offer one-of-a-kind vintage pieces that will last a long time and can bring out the client’s unique style.

Plus, we love their pre-loved consignment. This collection had us in awe, and it’s good news that they remain in good condition.

What makes them stand out is their custom-on-the-spot service. It’s where clients get to design, choose the materials, and take home the jewellery all in one day.

It’s also a good thing that they don’t sell blood diamonds, and they use pre-loved materials as much as they can. Plus, their ethical practices include using recycled gold and silver.

Convenience is also what Anice Jewellery provides to clients. They accept virtual and in-person appointments for custom jewellery, same-day delivery for virtual custom-on-the-spot pieces, and pick-up at their store.

But a minor issue is that not all pieces are available for pick-up at their Ossington shop. We don’t find that too much of a hassle, though, since they offer free shipping within Canada on orders of over $200.

6. The Beadery

Pros

  • Uses both modern and vintage designs
  • Specializes in hand-cut gemstones
  • Repairs jewellery from other shops
  • Offers a wide variety of gemstones

Cons

  • No virtual consultations
  • Limited options on website

Claude Abittan is the jewellery designer of The Beadery, who has decades of experience in the field. One of the things we like is how he incorporates modern and vintage designs.

Abittan is also an expert in cutting gemstones. One of the things he’s known for is his hand-cut gemstone designs, which have become his signature.

As a result of his signature style, we noticed how unique his pieces are. It’s almost like his one-of-a-kind pieces have their own distinct personalities, which we found remarkable.

Speaking of one-of-a-kind, we appreciate The Beadery sells various gemstones in various shapes and sizes, allowing the client to make their own jewellery. There are many types of stones available, including quartz, aquamarine, opal, and kunzite.

However, we were iffy that there are no virtual consultations available. Other shops on our list offer this for convenience, which is why we’re adding this as a downside.

Also, there isn’t a tonne of ready-made jewellery available on The Beadery website. Because of that, we found that in-person shopping is best for this Toronto jewellery store.

But a noteworthy aspect is that Abittan and his team accept repairs for jewellery purchased from other shops. Not all shops do, so we found this really convenient.
