Pros

  • Mainly represents employees
  • Has many notable cases
  • Featured by many media outlets
  • Law Firm won ThreeBestRated
  • Doesn’t charge hourly fees

Cons

  • Not all initial assessment fees are free

One of the impressive qualities of Matthew A. Fisher is his experience. He’s been working at Lecker & Associates since 2008 and became a partner in 2016.

We appreciate his wide range of practice areas in employment law. He mainly focuses on representing employees for wrongful dismissal, constructive dismissal, job layoffs, severance package negotiations, and toxic workplace issues.

Additionally, we found it impressive that he has had many notable cases. One of which is Felice v. Cardinal Health Canada, in which he represented the plaintiff.

In that case, the plaintiff was awarded 12 months’ salary in lieu of notice after working for 19 months. Plus, this case has been cited by many employment lawyers due to the win for short-service senior executives.

Not only that, we commend Fisher for winning many notable cases for his clients. For us, it shows his dedication to his work and the Toronto employees he serves.

As a result of his landmark cases, many media outlets have featured him. An impressive feat! Some of these are the Toronto Star, CBC News, Global News, National Post, and Toronto Sun.

One thing we like about Fisher’s law firm, Lecker & Associates, is they won ThreeBestRated for Toronto Employment Lawyers in 2022. That speaks about the overall service of the law firm, don’t you think?

Although they don’t usually charge an initial assessment fee, it’s not quite applicable to every case. That’s a downside for employees who are out of work at the moment due to the uncertainty.

Nonetheless, we appreciate that they try to avoid hourly fees as those can be expensive. Instead, they charge a percentage of the settlement—a helpful aspect for employees.

Pros

  • Graduated in the top 10% at Osgoode
  • Specializes in class action and major claims
  • Offers 30-minute free consultations
  • Has a live chat agent

Cons

  • Fees lean on the higher side

Partner at Monkhouse Law, Alexandra Neacsu Monkhouse, caught our attention due to her background. It’s pretty impressive, actually!

Monkhouse graduated in the top 10% of her class at Osgoode Hall Law School, a prestigious and competitive law school in Canada. Plus, she earned her master’s degree in International and European Business Law at Paris Dauphine University.

Clearly, we think she’s highly qualified in her field. With her training and background, she’s one of our top employment lawyers in Toronto!

We appreciate that she focuses on class actions and major claims. In fact, she was part of the team that represented the plaintiff at the Rallis v. Approval Team Inc., 2020 ONSC 4197 (CanLII), one of the notable cases for misclassification class actions in Canada.

Additionally, we admire Monkhouse for her extensive experience in appearing at the Courts. For us, that shows her legal skills in client representation.

We were also glad that Monkhouse Law offers free 30-minute consultations. Not all employment law firms do, which sets them apart from others.

Besides that, we appreciate them for providing both contingency and hourly fees. That’s convenient, especially if the client is out of work, as options exist.

But be ready for the case review fee, which is $350 plus HST. It’s slightly on the higher side, but we think they make it up for their service quality.

Finally, we appreciate Monkhouse Law’s live chat agent on their website. It may not be a big deal, but we found it convenient if you need quick assistance.

Pros

  • Earned master’s degree at Osgoode
  • Certified Specialist in Civil Litigation
  • Specializes in conflict resolution
  • Law firm offers cost-effective solutions

Cons

  • Firm has limited number of lawyers
  • No rates available online

A senior counsel at Zubas Flett Law, Loreta Zubas has been practicing for over three decades. Considering the years she has assisted employers and employees, we found that worth noting.

We really like her background. Zubas finished her master’s degree in law in 2001 from Osgoode Hall Law School, a prominent law school in Canada.

Additionally, we found it impressive that Zubas became a Certified Specialist in Civil Litigation from the Law Society of Ontario. Only those who meet (and go beyond) the standards earn this, so this deserves a highlight!

Another thing we like about her is she specializes in conflict resolution. This way, clients can avoid a long and expensive process.

But that doesn’t mean she won’t represent her clients in court if necessary. She’s an expert litigator, which shows us her skills in employment law.

Zubas represents employees and employers specializing in workplace discrimination, human rights, and more. In our opinion, this means she has more than enough insight into legal issues from both sides, which is important to have!

A minor issue about Zubas Flett Law is the small number of available lawyers they have, unlike other employment law firms on our list. That’s a downside if Zubas is busy.

Also, we would like to see their fees on their website for better transparency. We believe it would be reassuring for clients, especially since Zubas Flett Law tend to offer cost-effective solutions.

Pros

  • Well-recognized lawyer
  • Has an online Pocket Lawyer Tool
  • Advocates for worker’s rights
  • Offers contingency fees

Cons

  • Fees are a bit expensive
  • Has a packed schedule; practices outside Toronto

Lior Samfiru is the national co-managing partner at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP. What fascinated us is he heads the firm’s Labour & Employment Law Group, showing us his dedication to helping employees.

His practice areas include wrongful dismissal, termination without cause, workplace harassment and discrimination, and more! Honestly, it was shocking how deep his knowledge of employment law is!

One thing we like about him is he’s a well-recognized lawyer, earning features from many local and international media outlets—impressive, no? These include Global News, CBC News, Toronto Sun, CTV, The Globe and Mail, and Huffington Post.

In addition, he’s a legal columnist at the Global News website. It’s quite refreshing for us because he writes weekly articles sharing advice for employees so they know their rights.

Besides those things, we were glad to learn that he hosts the Employment Law Show at Global News. What’s good about this is he discusses workplace rights, and it’s like free legal advice!

Despite representing both employees and employers, we admire Samfiru’s dedication to worker rights. He’s even represented clients from Ontario, BC, and Alberta, showing his vast knowledge of employment law in the country!

In fact, his (and his team’s) commitment to worker rights is evidenced by their Pocket Lawyer tool. It’s an online calculator determining whether you need further advice from an employment lawyer. It’s free, too!

However, Samfiru’s recognition makes him a busy man. Hiring him means fighting for schedule from other individuals in BC and Alberta!

Lastly, we appreciate Samfiru Tumarkin LLP for offering contingency fees so you don’t pay until the settlement. That’s a plus since their fees lean on the pricier side, with some starting at around $350 for a consultation—even higher for more experienced lawyers.

6. Stacey R. Ball – Ball Professional Corporation

Pros

  • A leading Canadian lawyer by Lexpert
  • Author of the Canadian Employment Law
  • Cited by the Supreme Court of Canada

Cons

  • No other lawyers are available
  • Consultation office is far from main office

Stacey R. Ball is the founder and principal of the Toronto boutique law firm Ball Professional Corporation. But what we most like is he’s a barrister and solicitor, showing us his high levels of expertise in the field!

When talking about his expertise, we think it’s important to mention that he practices in Ontario, Alberta, and BC. Why? Because it shows his knowledge of Canadian employment law!

Moreover, we appreciate his vast practice areas, allowing him to represent both employer and employee. He specializes in class action lawsuits, workplace harassment, workplace disability, union issues, and many more!

In 2022, he earned a feature from the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, making him a highly recommended employment lawyer! That’s impressive, eh?

In addition, we found it incredible he was picked as one of the 500 leading Canadian lawyers by The 2021 Lexpert/American Lawyer Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada. Those 500 lawyers were chosen out of 500,000 in the country!

On top of that, it’s worth noting that he authored the definitive treatise, Canadian Employment Law—which he updates three times a year! Even better, his work has been cited numerous times, including the Supreme Court of Canada.

An issue we found about Ball’s law firm is that the main office is different from the consultation office. It’s not like they’re a stone’s throw away from each other, which we think is slightly inconvenient for commuters.

Also, since Ball Professional Corporation is a boutique law firm, there aren’t many employment lawyers available. We think that can be an issue, mainly since Ball handles most cases.
