Pros

  • One of the most reputable and esteemed universities in Toronto
  • Offers both undergraduate and graduate programs
  • Holds various events throughout the year to keep students interested

Cons

  • Expensive tuition fees

The University of Toronto is one of the most reputable institutes in the city so it’s a no-brainer to choose to study here for film. It’s been around since 1827 so you can already rest assured that you’re in good hands in terms of longevity and reliability.

This university features a separate branch dedicated to film called Cinema Studies Institute and it’s here where we were highly impressed. We saw that they offer both undergraduate and graduate programs that study anything from music videos to adult cinema, animation, etc.

Also, we love how they offer various events throughout the year to keep students engaged and interested in the course. These events include special screenings, seminars and others that provide students with a glimpse of what goes into cinema.

Lastly, it should go without saying but attaining a degree from an esteemed university like this will give you a slight edge when it comes to the real world. Don’t get us wrong, a degree is still a degree anywhere you attain it, but this does give you a slight advantage.

Our only gripe with this course or the entire university for that matter, is that it’s quite expensive. There is a silver lining though, as they offer scholarship programs for high academic achievers and creative thinkers alike.

Pros

  • Hands-on and collaborative learning experience
  • Covers every crevice of filmmaking

Cons

  • Above average prices
  • Some teachers are unenthusiastic

Toronto Film School is a name that often popped up during our hunt for the best digital filmmaking course in the city. As soon as we saw this university’s name, we immediately thought that it was one of the premiere places to study film, and thankfully, it lives up to its name.

We say this because they offer one of the most hands-on and collaborative opportunities for their students. These opportunities come in the form of programs that will require students to create projects such as screenplays, storyboards and more.

What we love about these programs is that they also give students a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes of creating a motion picture. We’re talking about the lesser-known parts of moviemaking, which include budgeting, audio recording, editing, scheduling and more.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that these programs and opportunities are headed by some of the most talented professionals in the industry. They’ll be with you for 18 whole months in a small class, which makes the experience all the more intimate.

One of the things that we aren’t a fan of is this school’s ridiculously high prices. Furthermore, since some of the teachers here are already employed in the field, they mostly treat the school as a part-time gig.

Pros

  • Latest technology at your fingertips
  • Talented professionals helming each class
  • Smaller classes make for more intimate learning sessions

Cons

  • Pricey

York University is another prestigious school that we think you should check out if you want to make it big in the movie industry. It features both undergraduate and graduate programs that offer courses such as screenwriting, production and media arts.

One of the things that we love the most about this school is that it’s equipped with the latest and best equipment needed for filmmaking. Whether it be microphones, cameras and more, this institute puts everything that an aspiring filmmaker needs at their fingertips.

What’s great about the learning experience in this school is that each class features a small number of students (more or less 15 to 25). Furthermore, it also helps that each class is helmed by award-winning professionals who have already garnered experience in the field.

Accessibility-wise, it doesn’t get much better than this university, as it’s located in the heart of Toronto. Not only does this make it an easy-to-access location, but it also puts its students near the city’s best attractions.

However, this location can also be a double-edged sword, as this particular location makes commuting that much more difficult and expensive. This, plus the already high tuition fees they charge can make or break a student’s decision to study here.

Pros

  • Covers every process involved in filmmaking
  • Expert tutors

Cons

  • Pricey tuition fees

Trebas Institute offers one of the most comprehensive filmmaking courses in Toronto. We were surprised to see that the course they offer here spans an entire year, but once we saw what was going to be talked about each week, we quickly understood why.

This university does a great job of strategically dispersing different areas of filmmaking throughout the year.

For instance, during the first term, you’ll be practising nothing but screenwriting to hone your skills. Then in the next one, you’ll start working on audio and so on!

The great thing about having this kind of schedule is that it lets you learn the chronological way of making a movie. This way, you’ll get an idea of how your future motion picture will come about starting with creating the script or drawing up a storyboard.

By the end of the course, the institute promises that you’ll acquire skills such as creating special effects for film, script writing, directing and anything in between.

At first, this may seem like something too good to be true. However, all our doubts were out the window when we saw that the classes would be helmed by experienced instructors.

The only thing that we aren’t a fan of is its slightly high tuition fees. If you can look past that, however, this is a solid option for you.
