How to Get Around

Trains: Currently, there isn’t direct train service for passengers within Banff. However, the scenic beauty of the surrounding areas can be enjoyed through various rail tours that operate in the broader region, offering a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Buses: Roam Public Transit is your go-to for bus services in the Banff and Lake Louise area. They offer multiple routes to popular locations like Lake Louise (What is there to do in Lake Louise in the winter?), Johnston Canyon, the Banff Gondola, and Lake Minnewanka.

These buses run year-round, with additional seasonal routes during the summer months for those popular summer spots. For unlimited travel on all Roam routes, consider getting a Roam Transit Super Pass for a day.

Taxis: Taxis are readily available in Banff, providing a convenient option for getting around, especially when public transit doesn’t suit your schedule or destination. You can easily hail a cab in town or book one through various local taxi companies.

Car: The Banff Gondola area is easily accessible by car, and has available parking spots. However, early arrival is recommended due to limited spaces, especially in peak seasons.

Designed inclusively, the Banff Gondola accommodates children, seniors, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), featuring wheelchair-accessible facilities and gondola cars.

Things to Do and See

Your journey to the skies begins at the Lower Terminal, nestled at the end of Mountain Avenue. Here, you’ll find everything you need to kickstart your adventure: a ticket counter to get you on your way, a gift shop brimming with souvenirs, and yes, a Starbucks for your caffeine fix.

Remember, the summit of Sulphur Mountain is a whole different world, temperature-wise. It’s often about 10°C (18°F) cooler up there than at the Lower Terminal.

So, if you’re someone who feels the chill, it’s wise to bring along some extra layers. This way, you can stay cozy and enjoy the stunning views without the shivers.

For those of you looking to conquer your fear of heights, here’s a special tip: focus on the gradual change in scenery as you ascend.

The gondola’s smooth and steady climb offers a unique way to acclimate to the height, allowing you to gradually adjust and take in the expanding horizon.

This is the perfect time to practice mindfulness, focusing on the beauty of the landscape and the sensation of gently rising above it all. Remember, it’s about embracing the journey, step by step, and finding joy in the newfound perspective you gain with each meter ascended.

As soon as your gondola reaches the Upper Terminal, you’re in for a treat. This four-level haven is more than just a stop; it’s an experience.

Level 1

Step off at Level 1, and you’re greeted with the inviting aroma of Castle Mountain Coffee. Need a souvenir? The gift shop here has got you covered.

Imagine comparing your hand to a grizzly bear’s paw print—it’s a real eye-opener! This level is a treasure trove of information and hands-on fun, perfect for curious minds of all ages.

Level 3 & 4

Don’t miss the culinary delights waiting for you on Level 3. With options like Sky Bistro and Northern Lights (northern lights banff) Alpine Kitchen, your taste buds are in for a journey too.

And for the grand finale, head up to Level 4. The 360-degree rooftop observation deck offers breathtaking views that stretch for miles. It’s the perfect spot to relax and soak in the beauty of Banff, with cozy fire pits adding to the charm in winter.
