The 5 Best Cooking Classes in Montreal That Will Have You Cooking up a Storm!

Chef’s Expertise - A cooking class requires a highly qualified instructor. So, we looked at the chef’s culinary background (education and professional training) to ensure they can explain the fundamentals of cooking.

Class Cuisines and Recipes - A variety of cuisines (Asian, Western, and Vegan) can teach more people. The availability of different kinds of recipes makes them more accessible for all taste buds.

Availability and Schedule - A cooking class that accepts more students is more accessible. Most importantly, we checked how flexible the classes are for working individuals, since they’re the main audience.

Rates - Cooking classes aren’t going to be cheap, but they must be worth the money based on the skills you’ll learn and inclusions. Basically, you should walk away with exactly what was promised.

I’d like to think I cook decent food—not bad, but just right. It’s not enough as a foodie, though, where nothing feels better than successfully cooking my own meals.

Sure, I can grab recipes online, but learning from a chef takes the cake. You don’t simply follow instructions, but actually get to learn why techniques are important. Who knew that the right temperature could help balance flavours?

If you enjoy food (whether you’re serving yourself or others), I suggest ditching canned monstrosities and enrolling in a cooking class

To help you find your best fit, we handpicked and reviewed Montreal’s best cooking classes, where you can learn fundamental skills and techniques for meals that’ll blow your mind! Read on!

Atelier Table Rouge will take you on a gastronomic journey without leaving Montreal! It’s one of their best features, honestly, as you’ll learn a variety of cuisines and recipes, whether you’re a pro or haven’t even touched a knife yet.

For instance, they offer Middle Eastern classics, Mexican favourites, breakfast staples, and meat-focused recipes.

As an extra topping, they teach cooking classes for kids, and not just quick and easy recipes with 2 ingredients, but crowd-pleasing classic cuisines like Indian food.

There’s plenty of availability by welcoming up to 20 students. In our experience, the cooking workshops still felt intimate due to the hands-on learning and focused guidance from the chef.

They would be perfect if they added weekend classes for adults, since they only offer Saturdays for kids. But it’s fine, considering they focus on evening cooking workshops to cater to regular working hours.

Overall, they’re an outstanding option. The engaging classes will teach you new techniques, all for a price that won’t burn a hole in your pocket!

Pros

  • Welcomes adults and kids
  • Variety of cuisines and recipes
  • Accepts up to 20 students
  • Engaging, hands-on learning
  • Reasonable pricing
  • Caters to busy bees; evening classes

Cons

  • No weekend classes for adults

Well-organised and easy

“LOVED IT! Went here with work and what a nice place. Well organised & easy and so yummy. The entire staff was so so friendly and amazing. The chef so informative & learned even a few new trick. The whole process was fun. Highly recommend it!”

– Julie G, Google Review

An absolutely wonderful and delicious experience

“An absolutely wonderful and delicious experience! I came along my husbands holiday work party and had such a fantastic time! Gabby and Joe were absolutely full of energy—so welcoming, helpful, and genuinely fun to learn from. They created an atmosphere that was engaging and relaxed, making the class enjoyable from start to finish. The food (we made the Portuguese option) was delicious, well instructed, and the portions were incredibly generous. We left happy, full, and inspired to cook more at home. Highly recommend this cooking class to anyone looking for a great time and amazing food!”

You’ll find one-of-a-kind cooking classes in Montreal at Appetite Books, a bookstore that focuses on cookbooks. Instead of the usual fare, you’ll be learning and seeing first-hand how to cook recipes straight from the cookbook!

You would think that it’s redundant, given that you can find it in the cookbook. But you see, not every individual can follow a recipe to a T.

Cooking is elevated at this bookshop-slash-cooking-class, where the chef will show you exactly how to do things. Chef Johanthan Cheung is also the owner of the shop, who learned global cooking techniques during his time working at restaurants.

One of our favourites is the availability of a variety of cuisines and recipes, since there’s a new cookbook to follow for every class. There aren’t a tonne of spots, though, so we suggest booking at once or joining the waitlist.

Plus, there’s usually a hands-on knife skills workshop, which teaches you how to properly use this sharp tool in the kitchen—an important skill!

Pros

  • Cookbook-focused cooking classes
  • Offers knife skills workshops
  • Chef is equipped with global cooking techniques
  • Various cuisines and recipes

Cons

  • Slots fill up fast

The food was absolutely delicious

“What an incredible experience with Chef John for our cooking class! Our group of 9 had an amazing time — the food was absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere made it even more special. Such a unique and awesome bookstore setting too. Highly recommend!”

Cooks and teaches an elaborate yet humble and attainable at-home feast

“I have visited Appetite for Books on 3 occasions, all for private cooking classes with a big group of friends/family. Each time, everyone in the group thoroughly enjoyed the experience and food. An excellent place to sit back, sip wine and watch as Jonathan cooks (and teaches) an elaborate yet humble and attainable at home feast. Beautiful bookstore with great local and international books. Highly recommend for the events or popping in to browse the excellent selection of cookbooks!”

What we enjoyed the most about Thai by Flo is the symphony of flavours and spices. It’s your passport to a flavourful trip to Thailand, with a balanced yet authentic taste.

It’s headed by Chef Flo, who teaches beginners and advanced cooking learners. And he knows how to cook Thai food at its best, as he personally trained under Thai chefs.

We can attest to the good food. We’re happy to note that their chef respects the culture and heritage of Thailand, and he even includes some stories here and there, which kept the intimate class even more engaging.

And even with only Thai cuisine to teach, we like that there’s no shortage of recipes—there are classic flavours and hidden gems that Montreal is totally missing out on. You’ll learn a couple of recipes in one class too, which is a good value for money.

Kids are welcome to join the cooking workshops, but there’s no discounted rate. It’s understandable, since there’s no designated kids’ cooking classes here.

Pros

  • Authentic Thai dishes
  • Instructor trained under Thai chefs
  • Several recipes with each class
  • Good value for money
  • Kids are welcome to join

Cons

  • No discounted rates for kids

Perfect blend of fun and learning

“Perfect blend of fun, learning and obviously delicious food and drink. An intimate experience with tails to Thai culture and influence behind each course. I particularly enjoyed tasting every ingredient separately to learn about the role they play in a balanced dish and the ‘family style’ feast to top off the night.

A cooking class that will leave you with a Thai food fix and inspired to explore more.”

– James Richmond, Google Review

Made us feel so comfortable throughout the experience

“My partner surprised me with a Thai by Flo coming class, and we were not disappointed whatsoever! Florian is very knowledgable, patient, and fun – he made us feel so comfortable throughout the experience. We were able to try so many Thai ingredients and learn how they all come together to make some delicious meals. We’re already looking forward to our next class – thank you so much, Florian!”

One of our list-worthy cooking classes in Montreal is Reveena’s Kitchen, a completely virtual workshop that’s ideal for busy bees. Despite the lack of in-person classes, we like the flexibility, since you won’t get stuck in city traffic.

Reveena is a personal chef, specialising in vegetarian and vegan recipes. There’s no shortage of options for every taste bud, as she focuses on globally inspired flavours—but without meat!

She’s got an adventurous palate and has tasted various cuisines during her travels. It’s one of our favourites about her, as she can teach globally-inspired meat-free recipes.

Furthermore, there are loads of recipe options, from drinks to entrées to desserts. And with every booking, she’ll send you the recipe, ingredients list, and the online link for the virtual cooking class.

It’s just that her rates are a tad steeper than other cooking classes in Montreal we’ve been to, which was surprising, since you’re the one who has to do the grocery shopping.

Our colleague, who went, still mentioned that it was fun, with simple-to-follow instructions.

Pros

  • Time-flexible classes
  • Globally-inspired vegan and vegetarian dishes
  • Various recipes available
  • Simple to follow instructions

Cons

  • No in-person classes
  • Prices are slightly steep

Her classes were well-paced and easy to follow

“I attended a series of 6 online cooking classes and each week Reveena’s recipes brought new delicious flavours! Her classes were well paced and easy to follow along. Reveena was really able to illustrate her expertise in being able to troubleshoot the dish to take the taste to the next level. For someone who is vegan/vegetarian these classes are a great way of exploring new types of cuisine and expanding your quick meal repertoire. My pictures do not do these dishes justice.”

– Kyle MacKenzie, Google Review

A great experience

“A cooking course was with Reveena was gifted to me from a special friend. It was daunting to me as I am a medium good cook. It was however a great experience, my kids partly joined and came in and out of the kitchen, there was action and laughter – perfect! Reveena basically held my hand with every step and made it a great experience. She added special tips and tricks for everyday use and made me feel very comfortable. Thank you Reveena and Aviva xxx”

When it comes to professional cooking classes, the ITHQ (Institut de Tourisme et d’hôtellerie du Québec) is worth checking out. This institution offers a wide array of courses in the hospitality and food industries.

The Ateliers SAQ par ITHQ is one of our go-tos when we’re craving cooking classes taught by instructors with in-depth knowledge. You can tell that their chefs seriously know their onions, where every question is answered with complete details.

The 3-hour cooking classes will go by in a flash, although they’re mostly in French. The hands-on learning is excellent, but what really grabbed us by our taste buds was the wine pairing.

To give you an idea, every cooking class (unless stated otherwise) includes wines picked by their sommelier that will pair best with your food—a 2-in-1 class!

We like the variety of cuisines (like Greek and Italian) and the class availability, but the recipes are a bit limited. Their dishes usually go with wine, and we understand that not all recipes are meant for that.

Pros

  • Chefs have deep cooking knowledge
  • Food and wine pairing
  • Variety of cuisines available
  • In-depth 3-hour cooking classes

Cons

  • Limited recipes list
  • Classes are mostly in French

A superb experience

“A superb experience. The workshops were highly informative and expertly led by Martin Laroche, an actor/sommelier with an impressive knowledge of the world of wine who shares his passion with dynamism, professionalism, and humor. I’m already looking forward to level 2. I highly recommend it.”

– Dominique de Loppinot, Google Review

Simple and easy instructions for preparing the recipes

“I participated in the Ins et récolés d’ici cooking workshop. We cooked three recipes paired with a tasting of six wines. I’m not really a wine person, but the tasting, led smoothly by Nathalie Bergeron, led to interesting interactions between the group members. Chef Lola gave us simple and easy instructions for preparing the recipes. The workstations are well prepared, and the instructions are clear. My boyfriend and I had a wonderful evening.”
